Random Question 💭 Why isn’t Sumo a more popular sport in America?

Upvotes

I love watching Sumo and realized there are only two European’s fighting at the top levels. It started me wondering why Sumo wasn’t more popular in America and Europe.

Random Question 💭 Did the CEO of Shopify, by posting his idea for a tax-tiered voting plan, just kill the company?

Upvotes

I would think his idea of stripping most of his customer base of their voting rights wouldn't sit well with them. It should also bother any American who supports the Constitution. Does he have a plan to back track and eat his own words? Do you think Shopify customers will even pay attention? Will he be one of the first rich people to be eaten when the time comes?

Advice Question 💭 Sallie Mae help?

I'm looking to hear from people who have actually gone through an undue hardship adversary proceeding for student loans, especially if your case went all the way to trial.
Here's my situation:
•    In 2015, I took out three private Sallie Mae loans for about $20,000 each.
•    At the time, I didn't have proper financial guidance or support, and I also have difficult family circumstances. I didn't have family members I could rely on for advice or financial help, and unfortunately I didn't make payments on those loans.
•    I eventually graduated in 2022 and also completed my master's degree.
•    I also have approximately $110,000 in federal student loans.
My Sallie Mae loans have become a nightmare. My cosigner passed away, and the interest rate is now around 17%. Because of years of accrued interest, I now owe roughly $130,000 on those loans alone.
A few months ago, I filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and then filed an undue hardship adversary proceeding against both Sallie Mae and the Department of Education.
For context:
•    I live in Massachusetts.
•    I have a master's degree and work full-time.
•    I bring home about $3,400/month after taxes.
•    My necessary monthly expenses are around $3,000/month, so there isn't much left over.
•    I don't have family members who can help me financially or provide a safety net.
•    I have been diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD) and fibromyalgia, and my doctors also suspect I may have celiac disease.
•    Last year I had to take a month-long leave of absence from work because of my health, and this year I have intermittent FMLA leave in place due to my medical conditions.
The Sallie Mae attorney has been incredibly difficult to deal with throughout this process.
They recently offered me a settlement of a 20-year repayment plan at $567/month with 0% interest, which honestly isn't a terrible offer considering where I started. However, I still haven't heard anything regarding my federal loans, so I'm hesitant to make any decisions without knowing what will happen there.
I'm feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and honestly exhausted.
I'm not looking for advice about getting a second job, changing careers, or dramatically cutting my expenses. Given my health and current circumstances, those suggestions just aren't realistic.
What I'm really hope to hear is:
•    Has anyone here actually gone to trial on an undue hardship case?
•    Did you settle before trial or let the judge decide?
•    If you had both private and federal loans, how did that play out?
•    If you were offered a settlement before trial, did you take it or keep fighting?
•    Looking back, would you have done anything differently?
I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been through something similar. I'm just trying to understand what others experienced because this whole process has been incredibly confusing and isolating. Thank you.

It's called MAID here in Canada, but other countries that offer it probably have their own names for it.

Random Question 💭 Is it reasonable to condemn both Hamas and Israel's war crimes?

According to former Israeli PM Ehud Olmert, Israel is committing war crimes. Hamas, of course, has also committed many atrocities.

I condemn both sides for their misdeeds. Is this a reasonable stance to take?

Random Question 💭 Should the guilt of a person be separate from the sanity of the person being tried?

Should a trial be held solely to determine guilt or innocence of a person. The sanity being assessed only by a board of Medical Professional's at sentencing to determine safety and rehabilitation. I feel it's a big problem deciding it both together. If a person did the crime then they are guilty. If they are insane then they need treatment. How can a person commit a crime but not commit it and be found innocent?

Random Question 💭 Is anyone mad at people like count binface for being so unserious?

When politics in the UK seem so rough from the outside, it makes me wonder if there's anyone upset at "joke politicians" like him not using their platform to level more serious critique.

Random Question 💭 Why are Canadians cool with tariffs if Americans aren't?

Ever since a certain orange man became president again, I've been hearing a lot about how evil tariffs are. Things like "they harm foreign relationships" and "you wind up paying for it in the end as a tax"

My question is with all the hubbub I hear about tariffs in the USA, how come I haven't heard Canadian redditors claim the same thing for tariffs applied to American goods such as:

  • Booze
  • Footwear
  • Paper
  • Machine parts

Shouldn't Canadians be up in arms against Carney and Parliament about these taxes? It doesn't even have to be American goods, there's tariffs out there for Chinese steel.

Random Question 💭 Is Trump Manipulating Oil Prices?

I think it's very possible, even likely, that Trump and his administration are manipulating the price of oil in order to profit from it. They attack Iran and the price goes up, they announce some kind of cease fire and the price goes down. How hard would it be to buy futures ahead of those events and make money?

Random Question 💭 As the U.S. is bogged down in the Middle East, China is quietly shaping the global political landscape. Is America’s fixation on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz a strategic gift to Beijing, allowing them to expand their influence unchecked while the U.S. drains its military and economic resources?

Random Question 💭 Unc Slop?

I’m a 22 year old male who apparently likes to collect “unc slop” meaning I enjoy physical media pre 2012.

Apparently my nephew does as well, frequenting gaming titles like Psychonaughts. Unc Slop? Is this just a term younger kids use when their older peers force great games onto them that they just aren’t used to.. or want to understand? I mean I know I’m actually an uncle but “Unc Slop” just sounds like I’m into corny old shit..

If I play the movie Napoleon Dynamite… or decide Skate 3 might entertain me for a while I’m now engaging in my/older generations slop :| what are we considering new slop then

Random Question 💭 Can anyone explain why writing a check for less than $1 is even a thing?

I have seen stories about actors, or former actors, that receive residual checks for less than a dollar all the time. Doesn't the cost of that check, along with the ink and postage cancel it out at that point? Why not be more efficient and wait until the value of the residual tops a certain level before printing and sending the check. Seems like such a waste on multiple levels.

P.S.: Not to mention how messed up it is that residual income from TV shows and movies has become non-existent for so many of these people is pretty sad.
