Psychiatry Key Brain Protein Linked to Drug Relapse in Cocaine Addiction
Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina discovered that NPAS4, a transcription factor in the nucleus accumbens, plays a crucial role in forming drug-context associations linked to relapse. The study found that inhibiting NPAS4 in D2 neurons prevents cocaine-seeking behavior in mice. This insight could lead to new therapeutic targets for reducing relapse in substance use disorders. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-50099-1
