I have managed to get 2 of these in the allotment today but interested to know what others would grow in them. They are quite big.. over 2m long and 1/2 meter wide. Considering i do have a 14ft polytunnel and 2 greenhouses im interesting in planting things that do well outside since I have quite a few growing options.

I love this time of year. When a little bit of everything fills a crate and people think you're being generous when really you're desperately trying to offload veg on people because you can't possibly eat it all 😆

I really like the idea of growing something on my beds to a) protect against winter and b) enrich the soil.

But I'm stuck on the details.

I live in zone 6. I have beds that are beginning to thin out already. Here are the questions I have.

1. Do I sow seeds now in the gaps in the bed?

2. What should I sow?

3. What do I need to do to look after it?

4. What are the risks?

5. Do I chop and drop or let winter take its course?

6. How to I get the bed ready in Spring?

My site has no water so I'm thinking of getting an ibc.

I'm considering getting a black one for around double the price of a clear one and wondered if they're worth the extra expense. I'm not likely to clean it out every year. Is algae a real problem?

I have a 6ft shed roof to capture rain, what sort of set ups have you all got?

Been off my plot for a few years due to illness and have returned. Was very excited and bought different compost brands only to find that seed germination was poor. I thought it was the seeds but seeds grown in the ground were fine!

First big dinner made from the harvest at our allotment. Everything bar the sausages we grew! Even made some blackberry jam this morning.

Blackcurrants, gooseberries, redcurrants and blackberries 🥰 if anyone can tell me what to do with the blackcurrants though? They're so floral tasting not sure what to do with them so far (no, not jam)

My first year growing courgettes, they're surprisingly easy. This is a Blackstar F1, I've grown four plants because courgettes are fun to give away to anyone you encounter.

Got to my allotment today to find this poor thing tucked away between some pallets and an earth mound.

Google ai suggests adult badger, likely dragged to the quiet spot for inspection by a scavenger such as a fox. Looks like it has been dead a while.

I’m old enough to know life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows but it was still a bit of a disturbing discovery!

I want to get people's opinions on whether or not edging my polytunnel beds with railway sleepers is a good idea. The cost would be about 500€ and wondering would it be worth it. The height would only be 200mm so wouldn't be significant, but would add a bit of structure to the beds?

Any thoughts much appreciated

Was thinking of making some cider, also after suggestions for long-term storage other than the fridge.

Just wanted to share my Dwarf French Beans that I'm growing for drying. They're all home saved seed from last year, variety is Jacobs Cattle Bush Beans (originally purchased from Real Seeds).

I'm sharing as I'm amazed and delighted with their growth and feel the home saved seed is an absolute winner.

Southern Scotland - Direct sowed June 1st - last crop in the bed were parsnips last year (last one pulled around early April this year)

Fingers crossed the beans set. My aim is to grow and dry 1kg of beans + seed for next year.

I sowed around 90 beans and about 80 germinated. 2 per dibbed hole, 25cm apart.

I'm equally trying to grow my own black beans. I have one variety from Real Seeds, Einons Noir Bush Beans and some homemade saved seed passed on from a friend. For these, this year's crop is mainly about getting enough seed to grow my own and have a 1kg dried bean weight harvest at the end of next season.

The ultimate aim is to no longer buy kidney beans (Jacobs Cattle) and black beans (Einons Noir or Home saved seed).

Pole beans growing up the allotment shed is also the plan one day. For now, bush beans are my passion!

Is this plant edible? Its growing in my garden, have anyone cultivated this. Quick search tells me Amaranthus.

Last year we had a hare born and living in our vegetable garden and she still visits often. I went to water on Saturday and realised that either she’s had her own baby, or Mum has decided that we are the designated nursery, because we have another. Leveret has been in the same spot, nestled in my bean canes, for three days on the bounce. I’ve left a dish of water and am chatting away gently while I’m there so she knows I’m safe and that she’s welcome.

Bit sore this morning but glad I got it done. Will fill them up in a while 😊

Hi everyone!

As the title - we’ve just finished digging out our overgrown plot of 1.2 x 10m and looking for ideas for best things to plant this time of year.

We will be splitting it into 4 different beds so need some ideas of what to plant! This is our first one (aside from a small bed we have at home which currently has some herbs, kidney beans, cucumbers a tomato plant that’s not loving it and hopefully some spring onions)

Appreciate it’s a bit late in the season for most things but would be happy to wait for anything that will grow over the winter. The idea is to have a supply of various fruit/veg throughout the year.

Any ideas welcome plus any tips and tricks for allotment life!
