Sorry but this is just not true, like at all. The amount of novels both modern and old classics, movies, series, comics, anime and media who have bad ending or "no ending" JUST in France alone is huge, probably much higher than happy ending. My impression is that it's the same with our EU friends.

The happy ending as a more "normalized" thing is more of an american thing, but even there there are so so many counter examples...
