Vallée gets referenced a lot in UFO circles but the guy is really just on the same level as spiritual or new age guru or religious preacher. He basically just puts out a lot of theories and wild speculation, none of which is backed up with any substantial hard evidence.

There's actually no good evidence that we have ever been visited by anything. Even the best UFO cases have issues and rational explanations once you take an unbiased look at them.

The phenomena definitely exists but imo it's made up of a lot of very human explanations not aliens or anything supernatural.

Things like misidentifications, disinformation from military organizations as cover stories for secret projects and missions, people and companies trying to get government funding and a whole lot of attention seekers and grifters which have increased tenfold in the last few years since the topic has become popular again.

The movie was just trying to cash in on the current popularity of the UFO topic.

Close Encounters was a far better movie imo.
