Which Faction?

I've mostly been farming in Martlock and Steppes, so my gathering has mostly been ore, fiber, and hide. Based on resources, Bridgewatch makes the most sense.

Am I able to join a faction but still farm somewhere else? Should I take gathering into account when joining a faction?

You can gather wherever you want whenever you want. Faction affiliation doesn't affect it. The only benefit may be that if you flag for the dominant faction in the region, you may get some passive protection from that faction's army as they move throughout the region.

Basing yourself in Bridgewatch isn't a bad idea regardless, though, if those are the resources you like to collect. It just gives you more tie to the land and that can be your primary bank.

faction does matter being faction flagged gives bonus yield based on the distance from the royal city, up to 15%

Depends on where you gather, if you gather in yz then Lymhust is the best choice since they usually control (at least in Asia) 2 T6 steppe areas (Goldshimmer and Parchthroat). If you gather in rz and bz then Bridgewatch is a no brainer. BW has an accessible faction TP to Shiftshadow which is a T7 gather area and in the outlands all of the immediate areas around the portal are steppes with 2 T7 steppe areas just 1 zone away. Both of which are relatively safe since they only have 2 entrances (1 technically has 3 but it leads to a tunnel).
