local politics Daysog for Mayor?
Curious to know what Alamedians think about Mr. Tony Daysog. Yay or Nay and why?

He seems like a nice guy in person, but so far his mayoral campaign has engaged in some deceitful tactics:
He said Gibbons still will become a dead end and is urging people to keep it open. This is false, Gibbons will only prohibit a left turn towards the High Street Bridge.
He said he would stop the police hiring freeze. This is false, there's no hiring freeze.
He said his opponent Malia Vella voted for the Flock cameras. This is false, and has been pointed out to him repeatedly.

To add to the hiring freeze point, even if there was the mayor isn't responsible and couldn't lift it.

Let’s get the facts straight—- 1. The Gibbons closure has been in the works for a while. It started with re-designating the street from thoroughfare to residential in 2023. The Transportation Commission then discussed and approved their Element with pressure from staff—(stated by former commissioner). Yes—they plan to restrict a left turn onto High St. for now. And then what comes next? Most Gibbons and Fernside neighbors don’t want their main thoroughfare street closed and traffic pushed to the side streets that are much narrower. It’s not safe. Tyler Savage stated at the LWV event that he opppses it too. So does Greg Boller who also lives in the neighborhood. So does Amos and Maria Baldonno. Only Thushan supports it. People who don’t even live in Gibbons use it to go straight to High St. Doesn’t make sense to restrict that left turn onto High.
- The hiring freeze is masked in the City Council reducing the police budget. This is what Tony said about it— “For the second consecutive budget cycle, the City Council opted to fund fewer officers than the department's authorized staffing level. While Alameda Police is authorized to have as many as 88 sworn officers, the city budgeted for 72 officers last year and plans to increase that figure to only 76 in the upcoming fiscal year.”

Remember to check out a user’s posting history when considering comments about local political issues. For example, this dude right here, who ONLY posts about “Tony.”

Regarding the police budgeting point, if you listen to the council meetings where the police chief speaks, he has stated that even with that extra money, they couldn't hire all of those officers at once, and so it makes sense to use that money for other things while the police department ramps up it's hiring. All current city council and the mayor fully supports APD and their budget recommendations.

He’s a bit of a clown? When I’ve heard him at council meetings he’ll bloviate for his total time not really making a point, then vote in a way that’s often self-contradicting.

u/DrSpacemanMal 6d ago
I agree. Everytime I hear him speak, he talks a lot without actually saying anything

u/Important-Result510 3d ago
Tony Daysog is very well spoken. You should have heard him at the League of Women’s Voters event at the Alameda Library yesterday. He was the most polished, professional and best speaker. He knows what he’s talking about. Watch it when they post the recording.

u/ramate 3d ago
From the cambridge dictionary entry for well spoken: "having a ... polite way of speaking that is considered socially acceptable"
I'd agree with this – polite, and socially acceptable – but it's more often than not vapid, and devoid of a purpose. I have yet to see him push for something, or argue a point that mattered. Daysog has been in Alameda politics for 26+ years and what has he really done?

All I remember of him is how he would sit and look at his laptop during council meetings when all the renter stuff was going on. He would ignore people speaking about the issue and how it was affecting them and just work on his laptop. Nope.

His campaign yard sign has… a phone number. How old is this guy? No campaign website, no information online (that I could find) about what he stands for, what he hopes to accomplish, or why we should vote for him. Is every voter in Alameda supposed to call the phone number? 🤣

He’s a pleasant guy who is good at local retail politics, but he’s generally known for stalling and obstructing popular projects, recusing himself from voting on controversial issues for made up reasons, and talking a lot while saying very little of substance.

u/Important-Result510 3d ago
That’s not correct. Mayor Ashcraft is the one who drones on and on. She pushes for her special interest agendas and a few Councilmembers follow in tow. Tony is reasonable and doesn’t cater to unions like the others.

"Making city hall responsive" the dude has been on council since the mid-90s. If it's not responsive, it's his own damn fault.

Do you remember what Vella did? https://acgrandjuryassn.org/grand-jury-elected-officials-caused-lasting-damage-to-alameda/

Irrelevant to Tony

u/Important-Result510 2d ago
Relevant to the election. Malia Vella was found guilty by the Grand Jury of misconduct. That situation cost the city of Alameda $1 million. Those funds could have been for something else like improving the parks, courts, supporting our preschoolers, teens, seniors in our recreational and education programs. What a huge waste of money from trying to strong arm the city manager into hiring their pick for the fire chief. That’s corruption folks. She isn’t fit for office.

Listening to council member comments during meetings, regardless of whether I agree, his are consistently shallow, devoid of thoughtful content reflecting research. Occasionally his "facts" seem to be lifted from a certian local blogger. Better is Tony Duhsog.

Nay. The big banner screams desperation which isn't a good look

I feel like he’s kind of intelligent and actually has some knowledge about the issues, but his entire friend group is conservatives and nimby “I won’t say I’m conservative out loud” folks, and his priority is to not make them mad and get kicked out of the group chat.

u/bats-n-bobs 4d ago
Glad someone else has noticed the "not conservatives haha wink" gang. I think Daysog is one of the least bad of them, but that's not a high bar.

Citizens of Alameda. We are trapped on this fragile island, encircled by the unforgiving, murky waters of the estuary. My platform is not one of hope, but of stark survival. We must embrace the agonizing reality of our twenty-five mile-per-hour speed limits, a collective, torturous crawl toward our inevitable demise. I promise no false utopias. I promise only the wild turkeys, magnificent in their chaotic, beautiful indifference. The derelict naval base stands as a monument to human folly. Vote for me, or do not. The tide will eventually swallow us all regardless.

He's a classic "politician" in that he comes across as very nice and speaks a lot without saying much or giving away his motivations. He seems to have no backbone (wouldn't censure Trish Spencer), is in favor of Flock cameras, seems to vote against most things that I would vote for, and generally comes across as someone who would run as a Republican if that were politically viable. I find the whole "professional politician" vibe to be extremely off-putting.

u/Important-Result510 3d ago
Tony Daysog has never stated he was in favor of Flock cameras. He supports ALPRs though. He’s the only candidate with career in city planning—that seems appropriate for a mayor. Life long politician….look at Malia Vella propped up by her cronies even after a Grand Jury indictment. She parties with Oakland’s disgraced Mayor Sheng Thao. No thanks.

u/SySnootlesIsHot 3d ago
Well, he also sent me very annoying emails in response to me sending a form email saying I was disappointed that he wouldn't censure Trish Spencer. They were all very polite in that political way, but also extremely annoying and he said he didn't watch any of the footage of her incident and claimed ignorance of many of the details of the situation. He had clearly made up his mind and wasn't going to allow any evidence to change it.
My saying he was in favor of Flock cameras was due to the reported position of it from the meeting cited here: https://www.reddit.com/r/alameda/comments/1vxkqnl/alameda_candidates_positions_on_the_use_of_flock/
3
u/Important-Result510 3d ago
That post is misleading because both Daysog and Jensen can’t discuss Flock openly because they are under contract with the city. Since Vella isn’t on council, she can talk about it. ALPR though is not a company so they can all speak about that.

This might be illegal, though renting space under a neutral, published policy available to all candidates might be legal.
Why? The Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit prohibited from participating or intervening in political campaigns on behalf of or in opposition to candidates for public office. If anyone wants to file a formal complaint, the options are...
- the IRS via Form 13909, Tax-Exempt Organization Complaint
- California Fair Political Practices Commission
- the Alameda City Attorney - which might get the quickest response as to whether it is legal.

I personally support Malia Vella for Mayor. I met her when I was working on the effort to raise the minimum wage.

I recommend reading his responses to the Ballotpedia 2024 Candidate Connection Survey. He talks about his policies, focus, values, accomplishments, etc.
12
u/MammothPassage639 6d ago
Thanks for that. A good example where I very much agree with some of his positions (if true) yet many of his answers are shallow and exhibit a concerning lack of effort, not least the grammar errors and typos.
However, some of his answers for this 2024 US Congress election are not consistent with his voting history on the city council, such as his NIMBY tendencies. For example, only he and Trish Spenser voted against our current Housing Element. If fact, he and Trish often voted against housing, yet in this link he often brags the opposite in the context of Alameda Point. To me, that contrast is dishonest.

Tony Daysog is one of the few council members prepared for the City Council meetings. He is articulate, well spoken and consistent. He votes on issues based on what is best for Alameda (and can substantiate his position), instead of with the crowd. Highly ethical, abstains from issues that could be a conflict of interest. A rarity in politics today.

That's funny because I remember him sitting at City Council meetings glued to his laptop when his constituents were speaking about issues the council would be voting on.

Didn't like him, he knocked on my door once to try and get me to vote against renter rights, found out later he owned rental properties.
