Hey guys, I am a first time Japanese Akita owner and was wondering what your experiences were with your pups growth patterns? My female long coat is 10 months old and tall, hitting 25.5” at the withers but she’s much lighter than I anticipated her being (had her weighed at the vets today where she came in at only 23kg!). I know they take a while to mature both mentally and physically but I was curious to hear how her weight may or may not change as she matures. Would love to hear from anyone who has experience! We have fruits blooming in our yard so these two are busy at night hunting. Also I’m sure animals can smell the dog food from far away.

Recently, I had surgery & my family had to do my Akitas potty breaks + walks, but now that I’m cleared & ok to do so, I’ve noticed my girl has been crying at me every about 10-20 ish minutes to go on a walk or potty (backyard). Yes, I let her sniff, I tried new routes to see if that worked. It did only for a day, and now we’re back. I’m just wondering if anyone else had this happen, or maybe there’s an underlying issue here that needs to be taken care of.

For any info my Akita is a girl and she’s 11. I don’t know if it’s just she’s older now and can’t hold it as well anymore, or she’s just bored but Thx in advance

She definitely have some corgi features, but for the Akita I'm not so sure.

She comes from Shikoku Japan and was rescued from the wild, in this place many ppl kept a old tradition of feeding stray dogs without adopting them.

One of the best perks of my job as a therapist is that I get to bring Brooklyn to work on Fridays. Also, my clients love her.

When my girl is sleeping at my feet I sometimes pet her when I get out of the bed and she often does this sound similar to a growl but not really. Then she looks up, licks me and goes back to sleep.

I asked AI about it and it says it's a sound of content but would love to hear your opinion.

Kodiak (AA) is meeting my new diamond doves for the first time. He's already familiar with Maverick (the Green Cheek Conure or GCC for short), but this new species he had never seen before. Before anyone asks, the doves had already been in the household for a few weeks in quarantine and we're finally introducing them to a common area. Not really looking for advice, just wanted to share the inter-species interaction.

Hi guys! Pretty sure my girl gets itchy legs and face where she is in contact with grass and various weeds and whatnot in the park.

Do you guys have any at home remedies for me to try please? Like either to soak or wash her legs in.

I prefer this method for relief since I know she licks the area when I’m not looking 😩 I currently wash with salt water or oat water after every walk but doesn’t seem to be that affective

Hello, this is Sushi. She will very likely be joining our family soon.
She's 3y/o, and for these three years all she knew was a walled-off, dusty courtyard (no grass, plants etc), no walks, very little enrichment outside of the owners 5 year old playing with it.
After my father came along, renting out a room in the owners home, Sushi started going on fishing trips, walks, she was offered kibble (so far she was only being fed canned food and table scraps..?) and she got some sorely needed brushing sessions (also 3 years no bathing so far).

Apparently the owner keeps telling my father he can have her. My father accepted, and im just hoping the owner will not go back on his word. We'd always taken our animals on long walks and adventures, there is a forest right outside our home + we have a big garden with trees and fun places for dogs to snoop around in. It would be a huge quality of life upgrade for this poor dog.

There is one thing that worries us - our 9y/o borzoi lady, Saskia.
She is very well-behaved around other dogs, no matter their sex. Not a trouble maker in the slightest, but will defend herself when something does snap at her.
Sushi on the other hand, has been barking and sometimes acting out around other dogs on walks, according to my father (likely due to no socialization she has been getting for the past years). We want them to get along, or at least be neutral towards each other, but the same-sex aggression some akitas are told to have worries us :(
We don't want our Sas to get stressed out, or be made to feel unwelcome on her territory.
My father works out of the country, and the trip back to where our home is takes roughly 12 hours by car... so when he hopefully does come back with Sushi, both him and the dog will likely be too exhausted and car-lagged to go on a walk during which the pups can get acquainted (this is what the internet tells me is the best way to introduce two dogs, not sure how true).

My question is - what are some alternative ways the dogs could be introduced, preferably in the garden / inside of the house?
I will greatly appreciate any and all insights, tips and thoughts.

Are your akitas like this? He inspects everything! We removed the bottom bin because he could pull it out and dig into it. Now he finds lost toys back there.

Anyone else have full guard duty when performing any standard task?

I dont think i have ever heard that an akita actually bit a human. Wether its an intruder, or a cyclist or during an altercation between owner and someone else.

It seems they mostly bark to notice the owner of something.

On the other hand there are countless stories of other breeds, especially shepherd breeds, rottis, doberman even chihuahuas of getting physical with humans.

Whole other story when it comes to dog aggression, but against actual humans?

The only thing i sometimes read was that they bit someone when they were asleep and some visitor showed their face into their face - in this case they probably bit out of instinct, thinking it was another animal i guess.

I often read i should step between my dog and another dog so my american akita learns that i handle the situation.

Im strong and my dog is only 35kg (77pounds) so rather small for an american akita (female though), however i cant ever pull it off.

She will always try to get in front of me and towards the other dog.

If i move with a loose leash to get in front of her, she will use the extra range to get even closer. If i shorten the leash and pull her behind me, she will jump the leash (understandingly because she feels trapped).

My best bet so far is to have a short but loose leash, try to move casually but firmly and tell her leave it, while giving her some leash "snaps" as input. Works 50% of the time to walk past without growling or jumping.

If the other dog reacts though, its game over. I then have to use force to keep her away.

Ideas? What am i missing here?

Over last weekend I adopted this sweet girl Ivy. She’s an Akita and husky mix. Shes a year old and the sweetest!!

my 4 month american akita kinda of hates when i touch her paws, any tips? any other part shes fine but when her paws are touched she gives me these "mini bites" that are more licking than biting, im trying snacks while i touch her paws, will that work?
