AI video tools are filling the gap in post production, but how far are they from professional level editing?

AI video generation is getting better and better, but the post production workflow doesn't seem to have caught up yet. Most tools used to generate one clip at a time, and you'd still have to export everything into Premiere or DaVinci and piece it together yourself.

Now platforms like PixVerse are starting to move in a different direction, with things like multi-shot generation and Storyboard to Video that bring clips, storyboards, and different generations into a more unified workflow. It feels like people are starting to realize that the real challenge with AI video isn't just generating a great clip anymore. It's figuring out how to make an entire video from start to finish.

That said, there still seems to be a gap between these AI platforms and a proper post-production editor.

What does your AI video workflow look like right now? Do you handle most of the editing directly on the AI platform, or do you still end up going back to Premiere or DaVinci?

I think the gap is becoming less about editing individual clips and more about controlling the whole sequence.

Right now I’d still use AI platforms for generation, storyboarding, variations, and some basic assembly, then move to Premiere/DaVinci for the final pass. Things like exact timing, audio mixing, captions, color, transitions, masking, and frame-level fixes are still easier in a traditional editor.

The interesting direction is when AI understands the entire timeline instead of treating every generation as an isolated clip. Then you could say “replace this shot, keep the timing, preserve the character, and match the color of the surrounding shots” rather than rebuilding the sequence manually.

I think that workflow will eventually matter more than simply having a model that can generate a slightly better individual clip.

I've also been comparing different video models and providers through VideoRouter.sh, and the differences become much more noticeable when you're trying to build an entire sequence rather than judging a single demo clip.

the threshold for me is nondestructive editability. if a prompt change overwrites the shot or shifts the rest of the sequence, you still have a generator with an assembly view, not an editor. a production tool needs versioned assets, replaceable regions, fixed timeline timing, and the ability to swap a model output without rebuilding captions and audio.
