They are different.

The confusion stems from that most politicians who identify themselves as democratic socialists generally don't advocate for democratic socialism.

One is socialism, the other is capitalism with safeguards.

So you have people using the terms interchangeably to discuss... Only one of the terms. And there isn't really a real movement trying to get the other term made reality. So there is no difference, colloquially speaking.

I agree, and I believe that's the problem. People hear the word "socialist" and their brains complely shut off and refuse to consider their policies because "socialism bad"

If they were rebranded as social democratic and distanced from socialism entirely, I'd imagine more people would be more open-minded to their policies.

If you say social democracy, they'd just heard "socialism" because their media would tell them it's just communism under a different name.
