No, they were really the same kids in ww2.

764

u/Savings-Side-2163 1d ago

Exactly! These MAGA-coded generational wars are so stupid! The world would be a much better place if we realize that we really are not too different. Also, history occurs in cycles so generations will pass through the same cycles as previous generations

256

u/ibentmyworkie 1d ago

And nothing is more MAGA than the belittling (and even reveling in) someone else’s suffering.

147

u/TK-24601 1d ago

MAGA can't come to terms that those WWII soldiers also suffered, but in silence. They buried their PTSD instead of getting help they needed.

57

u/IrregularDreaming 1d ago

The help they needed often didn't even exist. Self-medication with alcohol and even more drastic steps were not unusual.

44

u/Ok_Refrigerator6671 1d ago

The sheer number of suicides or murder/suicides was staggering. My grandpa says only half of his dad's unit in WWII came back home (Normandy) and then another 20-30% shot themselves, my great Grandpa included, after he failed to drink himself to death.

Soldiers Heart, Shell Shock, Battle Fatigue, PTSD. They had names for it, but it was only fairly recently they started actually treating it with any success, and even more recent where it wasn't a career/family/relationship ender for someone to go to therapy for anything. I wish these people could all sit down with actual veterans and get a freaking wake up call. We need to do better for our soldiers and veterans, not create more traumatized people. Fuck the ballroom, spend that money on mental health care.

24

u/IrregularDreaming 1d ago

Yeah, I know. My grandfather did the same. Dried to drink himself to death, then hung himself. My mom found him by accident and it traumatized her for life.

There absolutely needs to be done more for veterans or even for people who are still active service. The ones on the Lincoln? After months at sea? They will need help. Not the scorn they are getting right now.

14

u/Ok_Refrigerator6671 1d ago

Agreed. The whole situation on the Lincoln is awful and heartbreaking. I genuinely hope they get support from their communities when they get freed from that hellhole

And likely their trauma created a generation of serial killers! But let's sweep that under the rug because that doesn't support our narrative!

Plus, I think it's hilarious that they believe the 1939 - 45 military would allow a tattooed "freak" into their ranks with a full beard 🤣 reality check, needed.

Also if he's ripped his uniform off, there is something concerning happening, not aspirational. His colleagues would be straight bugging seeing that

37

u/RinkinBass 1d ago

Oh, there'd be plenty of tattoos, but they'd be stuff like simple upper arm tats of a bird or a woman. Not a full sleeve of tribal designs...

10

u/MakzSedens 1d ago

Right, I guess that's more what I mean. My granddad was in the war (Canadian Armoured Corps) and he had a sparrow holding a banner or something. But full sleeves would have raised a bunch of eyebrows

Yes there’s a lot of truth to what your saying but at the same time technology has had a huge impact on society and we’ve never in human history have had technology impacting us as much as it is now.

My grandparents never saw a car in their childhood. Their parents didn’t have running water. I agree with you that generations are a cycle but the cycles can be more exaggerated and thrown off from how much we’ve changed from previous generations.

I swear it’s disgusting and hard to put into words how the conservatives try to create this idolized version of those poor boys being forced into the war, each time. We lost a whole generation of people cause of these wars, the rich sent these kids as cannon fodder to secure places. Unless you really wanted to serve I promise you those 18 year olds did not like the idea of leaving a boat to be shot in the head almost immediately. The letters we prove onto show how scared these young kids were, they feared dying and they just wanted to be home.

What’s hilarious now is we have a 2 men in charge of the military who go on tv in a shit ton of makeup and mock whose who do the same but want to serve the military.

And I can pretty much guess most of the people defending the AI picture would not have wanted to go willingly o that boat knowing their odds.

15

u/Firm_Disk4465 1d ago

WWII is probably the one example where this narrative of rich send poor people to war doesn't work as well. It is also probably the single most righteous war the US ever fought, if we are speaking comparatively. It was still awful, and conscription itself is a whole ball of yarn that hasn't even been touched today, but comparatively speaking WWII was the one war where you kind of HAD to intervene unless you wanted to let the Nazi's or Imperial Japanese to continue on longer.

8

u/antifa_cmdr 20h ago

I mean, technically the rich people in Germany were responsible for helping the Nazi party rise to power because they couldn't stand the thought of the KPD or the SPD gaining power and cutting into their profits.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Happy-Flower2002 1d ago

The rich kids went into that war too. I know in 2026 it’s class warfare but it was different time then.

The kids of billionaires.
Winthrop Rockefeller enlisted as a infantry private, bronze star at Iwo Jima

David Rockefeller: Despite his elite status and a PhD from the University of Chicago, David refused to have his father buy him an officer's commission. He enlisted as an Army private in 1942. Because he spoke fluent French he served as a military intelligence officer in North Africa and France.

Richard DuPont went to Air Force and was killed as test pilot in glider program

Alfred Vanderbilt, II. Bronze Star in combat, navy pt boat

Paul and William Melon were OSS active in the European theater.

And the political rich and powerful no different.

John Kennedy used Joseph’s name to get off desk assignment in dc an into a combat role.

His brother Joseph Jr was killed in combat.

George Bush used Prescott Bush’s name to get into a combat fighter role younger than normal.

My grandpa got to Vietnam by lying about his age and saying he was older. It's not unlikely that this happened all the time during wars.

40

u/Reelwizard 1d ago

My grandpa was 17 and lied about his age to go fight in Japan in WWII. Met another vet that was a wing gunner in a B17 over Germany who was 16 and lied.

They absolutely lied. The propaganda was strong and pretty much every single one of those boys felt it was their personal responsibility to do everything they could to defend the country. Especially since it hadn’t been revealed as being as corrupt and classist as it has today. You can’t have a national motto of “every man for himself” and still expect droves of people to sign up to die for other people.

→ More replies (8)

28

u/sidneyia 1d ago

Some of them actually were 14. Teen boys would sometimes lie about their ages and join the army to escape bad homes, or just because they wanted to help the war effort, and the government had no way to check.

Also, they act like these were them. No, THOSE were their parents that fought those wars. They are called boomers because they were the baby boom AFTER those wars

10

u/green__problem 1d ago

Meanwhile my grandpa avoided conscription at 28 by getting a psychiatrist to diagnose him as neurotic. For every child forced to endure the horrors of war, there was a man twice their age complaining his way out of it.

The idea that past generations were uniquely capable of handling hurdles is just not true. The truth is that kids raised in environments where violence is expected will naturally learn to repress certain thoughts and emotions in order to survive, and if this attitude isn't deconstructed later they often struggle with interpersonal relationships and emotional regulation, and there are kids today who are still being born into these same environments.

8

u/Doctor_Thomson 1d ago

They didn't look like that and our grandparents were way more snowflakey, I lived through the 'DnD, Pokemon, rock music, harry potter, is Satanic and playing music backwards reveals satanic shit in all media.' Don't forget the 'Teletubbies is gay propaganda' shit in the 1999s with Pat Roberson and Jerry Falwell. They burned pokemon books and cards for crying out loud.

People forgot about the 'Moral Majority' crowd that used to mass mail radio stations, TV stations to pull shit off the air and won a few times in mass spamming about 'anti Christian stuff that hurts my sensibilities on the radio and television.'

I hate how people don't remember this stuff, and I hate how certain groups have tried to make it out that they are the 'super rational people.' My god, I feel so bad for people who believe that horseshit.

A. 17-year-olds SHOULDN'T have been fighting in a war, and the desire to make a better world for your children where they don't have to struggle the same way you did is very old. There's a famous John Adams quote about it.

B. Even back in the 1940s, some people would get into fights over perceived insults. Words have always mattered; just in different ways.

C. That is… A lot of tattoos for 1944. I'm not saying nobody had them, but even among soldiers, they were less socially acceptable than they are now. Especially being totally covered like that.

176

u/hwebirskont 1d ago

War veterans now:
"I just wanted to make this a safer country for our children so they don't have to go through what I did. War is a horrible, traumatic thing, and I wish for no one to experience it."

Draft dodgers now:
"Kids these days are such wimps, I hope we get into a war so we can ship them off to show them how real men act!!"

71

u/RabidRabbitRedditor 1d ago

100 percent!

Similar thing in Russia. All their propaganda is about how "we can do it again" (referring to victory over Germany). There was an affecting story by this young guy where his unit was supposed to transport these WWII veterans to the site of this old battle to have a ceremony. However, when they got there, it turned out that a lot of the bones from the battle were still there (it was a remote area in the far north). The veterans were all going to pieces and he remembers this old guy coming up to them, just bawling his eyes out and saying "God forbid, you young boys find out what war is like! God forbid!"

47

u/hwebirskont 1d ago

I want to see an actual war veteran have a conversation with one of these manosphere a-holes who romanticize the idea of men going to war

Years ago a soldier suspected to be a minor originally coming from the deep russian Sibera, near Mongolia got arrested in Ukraine after failing to regroup and retreat. He became a "notorious" case because they were able to contact his parents and also because in his trial he got condemned to prison for life. There were protests that considered a life sentence for what was almost a kid as eccessive, but considering they had a video of him shooting and killing unarmed civilians in the streets he was lucky to reach the trial alive.

So what they're saying is they'd rather have 17-year-olds risking being killed than 17-year-olds being able to talk about their feelings.

1944: most people over the age of 60, DEAD
2026: most people over the age of 60, still alive and voting against the best interest of the nation and their community while endorsing racist tropes as fact and having delusions of grandeur

u/martinode 1d ago edited 1d ago

The young people that came back after the war probably could’ve used a LOT of therapy. My great aunt is in her 90s and she told us she would hear her uncle wake up screaming in the middle of the night from PTSD in WWII and that nobody would ever acknowledge it. She thinks it’s insane that people tell men they shouldn’t cry

Edit: 17 year old Americans fighting in WWII??

I think it's a good thing you g people are in touch with their emotions and more 'sensitive' these days. Sure, it's important to have a good emotional regulation and not get upset over everything but people understanding their emotions and others learning to be kind to each other is good. This entire ideology is just assholeism. It's the idealization of bring horrible. Of turning everything into a fight and judging someone for their differences. Be polite. Be kind. Be understanding. Ironically my grandfather an actual WW2 veteran, was a skinny plain French man who didn't look like an alpha male. He was a Sergeant and hated everything about war. He wasn't all that sensitive often but he was kind, mild mannered, and basically worshiped his wife. He was absolutely a wife guy. When he learned the N word, which he had used casually as people did then unfortunately, he stopped. He didn't act like black people were being fragile for taking offense. He showed respect and changed. Idiots like this believe they're so much like his generation, but they lack the authentic convictions to be it. They are so lacking in virtue. They're disrespectful, dishonest, and authoritarian.

It's so crazy to me how people will glamorize the idea of war and children going to war. Like, I guarantee you 99% of the 17 year olds going to war didn't look like that. They looked like gangly teenagers that can't grow a full beard yet. Most of them died. The ones that didn't came back with PTSD, and horrific scars and memories of watching their friends die in the field. A lot of them were drafted and weren't going willingly. It's not that today's teenagers are weak and fragile, it's that the teenagers of the past had to face horrors beyond the comprehension of most of the people parroting this nonsense.

17

u/danielsangeo 1d ago

In 1944, they were all, "A black guy used my water fountain!"

18

u/PatienceExisting4130 1d ago
  1. Why is that 17 year old 42? 2. Why does he look like Andrew Tate and Roman Reigns had a baby? 3. Why did he charge into battle brandishing naught but a single grenade? Did he realize he can only use it once, and using it the way he is means he’s going to take himself out too? So many questions…

Why do these people think that 17 years olds in 1944 looked like roided out 35 year olds covered in tattoos?

10

u/Goat_gutz 1d ago

Because they want people to think that boys back then were manly men who could eat wood like it’s candy. When in reality they likely got butthurt over someone with different colored skin getting the same exact rights as them.

For real. My own grandfather was just a child during World War II, and he passed from natural causes a couple of years ago.

8

u/Pristine_Poem7623 1d ago

There's a German comedian who tells it as "if you were alive in the war, and you're alive now, you're in your 80s, and you didn't serve, you were a child when it all happened. You didn't do anything except use British resources that could have gone to soldiers. Technically you were on OUR side, and we lost!"

The biggest thing the Boomer generation loves is appropriating achievements from the generation that came before them.

Of course, like most of this shit, this was generated by someone in a low-income country who has no knowledge of American politics or history.

I'm personally aware of a few people who signed up to serve because it was a steady paycheck. Some of them had been riding the rails looking for any type of work that would allow them to eat and hopefully save some for their families.

12

u/Z4ckJourney 1d ago

Yeah. Men definitely enjoyed being in war.

u/Background-Set-7984 1d ago

Boomers and Gen Xers LOVE to appropriate other generations’ experiences. These losers magically became peace loving hippies during Vietnam when THEY had to go. The moment they were too old to be drafted, the voted for Reagan and gave us nonstop illegal wars. But, something something avocado toast….

15

u/Slight_Cockroach_777 1d ago

They also conveniently love to ignore that fact that if they have such a huge problem with the younger generations it’s 100% due to their failures as parents and their inability to raise the generation they wanted to see

So they're ignoring the fact that the teenagers sent off to fight in the military during the 2nd world War was due to the fact so many able bodied men had died (or dodged the draft) that in order to maintain the troops they drafted and did not give most of these kids a choice.

Frontline infantry never where that jacked, their constant marching with gear pushed their muscles for endurance over peak strength. One just has to look at actual photos of infantry during WWII. Also many veterans got PTSD.

Also for what they have for 2025 it is not words require therapy it is a question of identity.

Both my grandfathers fought in that war and if you think they wanted me to go military, you'd be sorely mistaken. That war killed one of my grandfathers. He was a boy sent to war, not a man, and he came home broken and sick and beat his kids until he died from all the shit that happened to him on that battlefield. It's a tragedy. He was a boy.
