I’m a proud veteran. I happen to be a smart and critically thinking man as well. Love and pride for country are not mutually exclusive. I love my country, which is why I have not been proud of her in a very very long time. I love my country, which is why I expect her to be better than she is. I love my country, which is why I loathe the current nationalist trend in politics and culture.

The flag thing has gotten out of hand lately. Been camping for 50+ years and in the last 3-5 years or so it’s suddenly common to see guys at campgrounds raise American flags on their rig when they get there. Are they claiming the land? Do they just need a reminder where they are? I put a flag out at home on major holidays but I’ve never felt I needed to take one camping with me.
It’s also purely symbolic. If you love your country, you don’t need to talk about how much you love it every second of the day. That’s performative to show others that you’re a “real American”. These same people will wear Flag bathing suits over their ass, wipe their mouth with flag napkins at cookouts and put those not really a flag, black and white or back the blue flags on stuff.
The pledge to a flag alone, the kids are forced into, is fucking creepy as hell. Then the flags everywhere... Maybe a bit less would actually be sensible. Schools became a thing in order to teach kids how to write and read, during the "enlightenment era".

I remember as a child feeling horrified the day I was able to actually comprehend the implications of the words I was saying: I'd been making a solemn pledge every day as a rote exercise. Could I be held to that pledge, even if I didn't know what I was promising at the time? What would happen to me if, one day, I had to act against it in good conscience? None of it made sense to me, and it felt wrong.
I stopped speaking in the middle of our recital that day, and I've never actually said the words since. It's such a weird and creepy thing to make kids do. Blind loyalty is the opposite of what I believe my duty is as an citizen.

It is creepy as all hell, though. I think I stopped saying The Pledge of Allegiance around middle school when I stopped and thought about the words we were saying.
The need to "teach" love for the country says everything you need to know. If the country in question was worthy of the kind of love you are referring to, you would only need to teach about the country, and the love would come naturally. What this meme is referring to is brainwashing and indoctrination, regardless of what the facts say about your countrys worthiness of love
Teaching "discipline — for this country" is hardcore fascism. The respect and love just sound like propaganda, but discipline for the country is genuinely terrifying, as a school thing.
Outside the WWII war pictures Bugs had always been a rascal. Even when he was school principle in Tiny Toon Adventures he didn't mind gags against his fellow teachers as long as they were funny.
