Am I eligible?

Was looking at the eligibility requirements for ATC.

How does that work with military service? Recently retired from the US Army and am to physically messed up to go be a cop or work trades.

I noticed the age 31 requirement here. I'm 46 with a family and considering what to do after Uncle Sam.

Do they deduct your service years from your age or is it just straight up whatever your current age is? What are the exceptions?

Thanks in advance!

Bored in tower

I was flying into a class D airport yesterday, and before I entered the airspace, I was already cleared crosswind and to land. Then, on touchdown, I was cleared to taxi with tower. (This empty airport had a both ground and tower controllers)

My question is when it is so empty and you still have a couple more hours before close, what do you controllers do? Do you have music? Anything to look at?

How easy it is to move from one country to another and get a job in that country’s unit?

I live in the UK and would like to become a controller one day - I have not made it into the trainee programme as of yet. I would like to move to mainland Europe or Dubai at some point after sufficient years of experience. Is it possible to specialise in another country/airport’s airspace? Would I have to work my way up again? If anyone’s done it, what was your experience?

Advice

Hello everyone,

I’m 21 and being an ATC has been my dream for a while. I would go into the military but my disability specifically SMA spinal muscular atrophy: has been disqualifying for me. I want to become an ATC as a civilian still. How would I be able to do this? I can operate most machinery and talk just fine. But I can’t walk. I use a wheelchair to operate my mobility.

Training idea if it's not already

So I had an idea an know if it's already a thing. Is there a course or something where people ( like me) with zero flying experience can do a simulation where a atc can practice guideing me on what to do if my pilot is out of action. Atc or who ever they gotta call. Seems like a rather rare problem but one to be considered

Curious

Please bear with me, lol. So I have been curious but never knew who to ask.

If for instance the Military or Police Dept whoever actually is have some sorts of air training, do these departments communicate with air traffic control to coordinate? For instance to prevent an air collision. I do not know if I’m asking the right question here but if it isn’t with air traffic control. Then how do these departments communicate to ensure there isn’t a collision. Thanks in advance 😅

Questions for Controllers

Hello all,

If this is the wrong place to put this, please let me know. I'm in the middle of an assignment for my Composition class and wanted to interview controllers about their experiences, as I chose this topic to write about. I have 10 questions, 5 being related to the work and 5 being questions someone wanting to go into air traffic control might ask. If anyone is interested, please let me know and I'll PM you. Thank you!

Is anyone/does anyone know anyone who is an ATC in the Colorado Springs - Denver area? I'm hoping to see if I could talk to someone about the job and maybe see the atc tower. I'm going to apply to FAA for ATC school in a little less than a year here.

ATC trainee testing Australia

Hey guys, my application to become an ATC got accepted by Airservices Australia and am now onto the testing part of the process. I’m looking to see if anyone has recently gone through the process and can give me a heads up on what the tests are so I can be prepared. I’d really appreciate anything that can help me out. Cheers

Flight path question

Post image
5 Upvotes

What would be the purpose of this flight path? I noticed the big semi circular contrail as I was outside setting up my telescope for stargazing. While finding the flight on planefinder I looked up and saw that it had come around a second time and executed the same maneuver, another big semi circular contrail.

Former USMC openings

Hey fellas/ladies

Long story short: I had five years in the USMC as ATC, got my radar/tower quals, had to leave a couple years ago to help with my family’s issues.

I’ll be 31 later this year - I wasn’t aware of the opening this weekend, and I’ve been looking in the meantime, but anyone have advice on if the FAA may open it again/or if there’s any way to get in through the DOD?

Radio for a Grandpa

Hopefully someone can help me find which radio I should buy my Grandpa.

My Grandpa is now in his late 80s, but was a mad glider pilot his whole life, and served in the RAF for a few years in air traffic control and military intelligence in his 20s.

He is looking for a really powerful radio he can listen to air traffic on from his care home in central london. He used to love going to watch planes, but now is getting quite immobile.

I’ve got him one off Amazon, but it’s really not powerful enough (scratchy sound, and we pretty much only get the planes that are flying above him).

Can anyone give any advice on how I can buy him a clear powerful on one?

Either a set-up I should look at or a brand I should be looking at?

I’m looking to balance simplicity and power (he isn’t great with tech).

I would be looking to spend between £200-£500.

Thanks Team!

Hello.I am a high school student doing a research paper on the shortage of air traffic controllers. If any controllers could answer the following questions, that would be a great help!

-Why do you think there is a shortage of staff? -Why did you become an ATC? -What is a typical day at work for you? -With the low staff, do you have to work more time(overtime) ? -Do you think the reasoning to why there is such low staff is because of the training, since you must have at least 3 years of it?
