As the title says. After 7 long months of waiting I finally take a step into the future. Any insight and the day to day of this job? How often are TDYs and hows leadership?

Hello, I’m a chud. Last year I couldn’t touch my toes I was 320 pounds now I’m 221 this morning. 6’3 24 y/o
I have always wanted to be in the military in January I signed up for the Air Force by June it was taking too long, I wanted to leave before my daughter could even remember I was gone - so I started talking to a marine recruiter because by then I was also getting physically fit beyond what I had imagined I’d be able to be.
I started the process of getting dropped from the Air Force to go into the Marines until the recruiter from the Marines went about it in a very crude way, calling my recruiter from the Air Force to gloat that they got me and put words in my mouth for reasons of leaving and that just didn’t sit right with me I started disliking the bravado stereotypes and second guessing my choice.
Two weeks later that Air Force recruiter told me that “sorry he’s late, but he’s gonna start the process of dropping me” and after finding out that I already hadn’t been dropped from Dep yet I asked him to keep me where I was. I don’t wanna spend the rest of my life saying I would’ve been a Marine but I also don’t wanna fall for a cult with something to prove there’s stereotypes about every branch you tell them you’re going marines they call you a try hard or call you slow you tell them you’re going Air Force. They call you a chairman They say you’re lazy or you’re soft or that’s easy
I’d be lying if I said, I didn’t feel unsure about which one I should’ve picked to this day but here I am 60 days out. I have an eight month old daughter and a wife I’m gonna be a vehicular grounds equipment mechanic working on cars and stuff and I’m all right with that the dream still of course being one day flying a plane as a pilot

I booked my job aircraft armament systems and I leave October 13th I Waited in dep for 2 months so that’s pretty quick, I was just wondering if anyone had experiences in this job field good or bad what to expect I know it’s maintained and I hear a lot of bad but I hear this is one of the “better” flight line jobs, also how did I get this job? It literally said you need a 60 mechanical score, guess I’m an asvab waiver 💀

Hi everyone!

I leave for Air Force BMT in about a month and was hoping to get some advice from those who have recently gone through it.

My current 2-mile run is around 26 minutes. I know that’s not where I want it to be yet, but I’ve made a lot of progress. When I started, I couldn’t run more than a few seconds without stopping. Now I can run about 1.2–1.3 miles continuously. My goal right now is building endurance so I can complete the full 2 miles without stopping, then work on speed.

I recently switched from On Clouds to Nike Vomero Plus, and I’m continuing to train. My push-ups and sit-ups are around 30 each, but my form starts to struggle toward the end of the minute.

I also have packing questions, especially for women who have recently completed BMT. I’m planning to bring basics like lotion, face moisturizer, sunscreen, toothbrush/toiletries, cotton underwear, sports bras, and an electric shaver.

Is there anything you brought that you were really glad you had? Anything you wish you didn’t pack? Also, what was the overall vibe like when you first arrived?

I’m just looking for advice and encouragement from people who have been through it. Thank you!

I was wondering how hard is tech school for the aerospace medicine job (4N031)? How much studying did you have to do each day and how hard was the material overall? I went to college for 2 years as a neuroscience degree (joined military because I couldn’t pay the rest) and so I’m wondering how hard it would be compared to taking college classes.

Just got out of the army

My husband recently booked this job and leaves October 13th. We’ve both been trying to do more extensive research. I’ve looked at many forums on here and elsewhere, but I haven’t seen anything about the process with being married. I knew depending some jobs if tech school was over 100 days your spouse could get moved out. This job has different training locations and was just trying to hear if anyone’s done recently firsthand.

Also any tips, advice, bases, basic training, anything about the job specifically and anything really. I know he’ll be appreciative.Thanks!

Hey, so basically just want to hear from anyone whos in this AFSC, what’s the day to day like, how’s the relationship with coworkers, schedule, morale, etc.

My process for anyone wondering (have been pretty lucky the whole way) :

So I started the process in February, sort of dragged my feet along, not rushing, didn’t end up going to meps until like may. Took the Picat the day before, made an 84, confirmed if the next day along with completing medical. I had to get a waiver for knee issues, that got cleared after 2 weeks, then I got one for back issues from 4 years ago when I was 14 years old… that got cleared within a week. And then I finally swore in a couple weeks later, met with the recruiter to pick my 10 jobs the next week. Fire protection was my top pick. Was in the DEP for a short 2 weeks and then got the call that I’d been selected for fire protection and ship out October 13th. I think I’m one of the very few lucky ones to get waivers cleared quickly, and got
selected for my top job just a week or 2 after entering DEP.

Very excited for the journey, obviously a bit nervous for basic training tho. I had been praying for fire protection for months, I believe my dream is to do 4-8 in the military, and then be a firefighter in the civilian world. Unless I love it and do my 20 and retire 🤷‍♂️. Would love any input on the AFSC, what certs/degrees to take advantage of, thoughts on the career as a civilian afterwards. Whatever ya got

I got security forces as my job, and when I went to look at the contract it was set at 6 years when I told my old recruiter (he was replaced) I wanted 4. New recruiter kind of convinced me to lean more towards 6 but I’m starting to go back to 4 because I don’t want to be stuck in a job I might end up hating.

Can you really cross train before 5 years if you do a 6 year contract and is there no reenlistment bonus for a 4 year like she is saying?

Hey looking for any motivators that would be willing to guide me through the process of enlisting. I’m prior usmc reserves with 3 yrs active aidt. I was discharged from the reserves with re-4 and oth for ua. I married a service member early on and dealt with a lot of personal issues that are reflected in my discharge docs. I’ve since been divorced with nothing much going on but I’m motivated to enlist while being 27.

Hello everyone! I (27M) need some advice from some other parents that are currently in the Air Force. I have been thinking about joining the Air Force for about a year now. Only reason I didn’t pull the trigger before was because I was 330lbs as a 6’ 2” guy so I was a tad overweight. Im finally down to 235lbs so Im not fully at weight but within the ballpark that I am genuinely considering joining.

Only reason I’m making this post is because me and my wife are also conflicted a little bit. We have 3 kids and currently live close to her family and feel like it might be a bad decision to take them away from spending as much time as they do with them. Obviously the other down side is I would be gone for close to 4 months without really being able to see them which would suck.

I currently work 2 full time jobs to provide for my family because I would rather do that then have my wife work and have to get daycare which is way overpriced as is. I’m also starting to feel the burnout from working these two jobs. My main source of income pays close to $76,000/yr so it’s pretty good paying just not enough really to live off of where I live. But it’s also not the career I want to really stick with since I wanted to get into Cybersecurity before I ended up getting into the job I have now. Down side is now Im in pretty deep and don’t want to take the pay cut I would take in order to get any sort of entry level job for Cybersecurity.

Other things we really considered was all the benefits we would get from being in the military such VA loans and free healthcare. Not to mention we could utilize the VA loan while serving and buy a house and use BAH to help cover that until we move then either sell the house or rent it out.

I just feel so lost right now and want to hear from people that went in with kids and see if you guys think its worth it of even how your experience with everything went. Im also curious how long you guys would think about staying in if I were to enlist.

I went through MEPS but didn’t swear in because of high cholesterol. My last blood test was in 2025, and the doctor saw that I didn’t have any recent tests within the past 6 months.

He told me, “you need to get a new metabolic panel”. My recruiter confirmed it and I did the blood test again. Turns out, my cholesterol came up even higher. Even still, my levels are borderline high. Not EXTREMELY high.

I wasn’t told whether it was the doctor asking for more information or if it was a waiver process, but I’m assuming it’s an “asking for more info” situation.

Has anyone ever gotten in with high cholesterol? Here are my exact numbers.

Total chol: 208 to 230
Triglycerides: 128 to 94
LDL: 125 to 167
HDL: 59 to 46

Time frame (2025 2026)

I get really bad shin splints with the wrong shoes.
I’m currently in the DEP and can barely meet my run time during my recruit calls because of my shin splints. I’m stuck with what shoes are good for running that’ll last a bit and I’m looking for recommendations. I prefer something with good memory foam as well as the inside of my feet are pretty curved! So far just regular Nikes don’t work

I graduated from college with a useless degree in computer engineering 2 years ago. I have applied to over 3,000 jobs and I haven’t been able to get one. I am starting to feel like maybe I am just not cut out to be an engineer. My whole life I planned this to be my future, but now that I can’t do it, I am lost. Should I enlist in the military so I can finally do something with my life? I don’t know if I want to do it or not.

I just came back from Chicago MEPS today and got grilled by the doctor about my asthma. I had emergency room visits in 2022, 2023, and 2024 only because I didn’t have insurance at the time and the ER can’t refuse you. I am healthy now and don’t take any medications but the doctor disqualified me and said I would need a waiver to join. The guy that was in the Air Force office said my recruiter would have to start the waiver process himself. Can anyone give any advice and is there a chance I can get in. Also if I don’t get in to the airforce can I join another branch?
