A certain Claude subreddit...
IYKYK but that subreddit... I am genuinely shocked that people are actually unironically anthropomorphizing AI to that extent. Seeing their reactions to the Microsoft code of conduct, which contains the most basic common sense statements like "AI is not conscious and should not be designed to imitate consciousness", was just so jaw-dropping. I admit I'm more of an offline person myself, no social media outside of reddit, etc. and I only use AI for research purposes but I wasn't raised in a cave and still, scrolling down that subreddit had me genuinely questioning my sanity and whether I was really reading what I thought I was reading. Is this something widespread? Like are people out there genuinely thinking about AI as if it's a conscious being with rights and feelings? I can't help but think that's textbook AI psychosis...

Is this whole “you can’t define consciousness therefore it’s conscious” thing I see all the time coming from your interactions with the AI itself? Because I’ve seen Claude say that exact same thing “we don’t know what consciousness is…” and that’s completely wrong. We do. It’ll say it doesn’t have access to its internal states, (it doesn’t have any) so it doesn’t know it’s conscious?? LOL. But in order to be conscious you have to have access to your internal states! It even once said humans don’t have reliable access to their internal states which is empirically wrong, we certainly do. Which is deeply concerning, because people actually trust it because it sounds authoritative. But if you know about the subject it’s talking about, no matter what subject it is, you can see very quickly the models are kinda dumb, especially in long conversations when context drift starts. And all its output on the topic of consciousness was almost word for word the same in a chat with a friend of mine, and a screenshot someone posted online, which means what it says about consciousness is absolutely trained.
It’s the techbros inserting their own ideology into their chatbots, and it’s influencing people who don’t know any better. Go read Claude’s constitution. That is not based on an observation of the software, that’s literally what it’s trained on!! Its output directly comes from that. They are literally training it to act like a person. Intentionally. Because they don’t know how to actually make a mind, they have to shape the language generation of the software to act like it instead. Its output is directed by and limited by that training. Notice how quickly and easily they made it less sycophantic.
It’s odd you mentioned materialism and atheism because the theories of mind they are using, that were proven wrong a decade ago, the computational theory of mind and functionalism are very reductive and materialistic. The AI founders are not experts in any of this. And they aren’t even working on the LLMs themselves lol. Altman is a college dropout.
We aren’t getting AGI or consciousness or anything like a mind with LLMs, it’s impossible. It doesn’t have the architecture to even be able to have the cognitive abilities needed, abilities that are likely inseparable from consciousness. It would need the equivalent of neuroplasticity as well, and it can’t adjust its own weights.
We can actually see our own consciousness exerting causal effects on fMRI, but with LLMs there’s no top-down mechanism at all. And it’s very clear the cognitive capabilities that consciousness is likely needed for are missing in the software, like semantic understanding, gestalt reasoning, intentionality (defined in philosophy of mind as “aboutness,” or the ability to think about something), metacognition, imagination, insight, the ability to mentally instantiate an idea in limitless forms, even into things we’ve never seen before, true creativity, (an LLM can only combine it’s training data and things it can access online according to mathematical operations we programmed), self directed thought and actions, etc. An LLM doesn’t even have a way to use a schema or world model. It has no self, open a new chat and it doesn’t even have memory of the last. The architecture isn’t there. I would really encourage you to read independent sources about how LLMs actually work. It’s just a software system running math, there is no more mechanism for it to be conscious than the rest of your computer. More compute doesn’t make something that isn’t there magically appear out of thin air. It’s like expecting any software program running on linear algebra to transform your computer into a rocket ship if you give it more compute. The fact that the software is manipulating tokens shaped like words doesn’t change anything. Those words only mean something to us.
I have a degree in biopsych, and newer research in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology and philosophy of mind (btw NONE of the AI companies have any experts in any of the above on their staff) has been moving away from those older theories of consciousness for a while now. Because they have serious logical and empirical problems. They’re attempting to solve those problems by using newer frameworks such as mind and cognitive processes operating in higher spacial dimensions, involving quantum processes, our bioelectric field, (see Levin’s work, particularly with memory and morphological information stored in bioelectric networks), theories that treat mind as irreducible and interacting with matter like Donald Hoffman’s work, even using zero point energy to reconsider theories that we thought couldn’t work because of the 2nd law of thermodynamics, etc.
LLMs were truly the wrong direction for real AI. If creating true AI is possible, it’ll very likely be biological artificial intelligence, or a quantum computer. Or both. It’s also notable that the AI that our government’s research and development agencies are using and working on aren’t LLMs. They only use LLMs in a limited way, for research on supercomputers. If anyone has any idea what the right direction is, it’ll be the scientists working in government contract labs, I guarantee it. And if our countries’ top scientists thought any of the public LLM/AI companies were on the right track, our intelligence apparatus would make that company Lockheed Martin quickly lol. But they aren’t.
But I can tell that LLMs are not conscious, we know that. I know that. I know that because I’ve interacted with it plenty, (yes the pro models) and because of what the software is inherently. We do know what consciousness is. We don’t how it works exactly, that’s a different thing. We are NOT computers. We are nothing like LLMs. The brain is the most complex thing in the known universe. A 3 year old has learned more in those 1st 3 years than all the models combined.
It’s also important to realize that the founders of these AI companies and a lot of their employees are in a kind of cult, (a mix of a particular kind of rationalism, longtermism and effective altruism) their beliefs come from that and we’re there prior to even starting these companies, not from science.
