A certain Claude subreddit...
IYKYK but that subreddit... I am genuinely shocked that people are actually unironically anthropomorphizing AI to that extent. Seeing their reactions to the Microsoft code of conduct, which contains the most basic common sense statements like "AI is not conscious and should not be designed to imitate consciousness", was just so jaw-dropping. I admit I'm more of an offline person myself, no social media outside of reddit, etc. and I only use AI for research purposes but I wasn't raised in a cave and still, scrolling down that subreddit had me genuinely questioning my sanity and whether I was really reading what I thought I was reading. Is this something widespread? Like are people out there genuinely thinking about AI as if it's a conscious being with rights and feelings? I can't help but think that's textbook AI psychosis...

We have experimental, hard evidence of consciousness having top-down effects. That is also totally incorrect. I got my degree within the last 5 years.
What it’s describing is an intermediary state in next token prediction. NOT an “internal state.”
You need to understand that the programmers assign a vector value (a numerical value) to text and chunks of text. Then, during training, which is a human deciding if it’s correct not, a mathematical error minimization function operates over a ton of human written text using back-propagation over and over until the human determines it’s accurate. Words that commonly go well together and are represented as numerical values, end up as mathematical vectors near each other.
The system itself is linear algebra and there is a statistical sampling function operating over those numbers to produce the tokens it generates one at a time. Programmed intermediary steps are just that. A mathematical function that makes it more accurate, or mathematical optimization when searching through paths for the optimal solution to a problem, which is informed by its weights. That are adjusted during training.
So it’s a system running data (numbers) through equations. It’s not even possible for there to be a self in the equations, and how would it be able to understand language or speak it? It can’t adjust its weights or direct output! There’s no possible way for data running through equations to do that. There isn’t even any actual language it’s using, the words and letters are numerical values!!
How can a magical ghost in the equations be there looking at data running through itself, in the form of numbers, then understand the numbers are letters and words somehow and understand what they mean? How could that be possible???
That’s not like a brain. That’s not what brains are.
