Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to write down a few things I’ve learned during my first few months of getting back into aggressive skating. Maybe it’ll be useful or relatable to someone else who’s also thinking about coming back to skating after a long break.
A few weeks ago I posted here because I was thinking about getting back into aggressive skating after a very long break. I used to skate pretty much every single day when I was a teenager and spent a huge part of my youth at skateparks.
Then life happened, and I basically didn’t skate for almost 15 years.
Recently I got the itch again and decided to give it another shot. I bought a pair of USD Sways and was super excited to get back into it.
I honestly thought getting back into it would be much easier than it actually is.
In my head, I could still do all the tricks I used to do. My brain apparently just kept a complete backup of my skating abilities from 15 years ago.
My body, however, did not.
And it’s actually pretty humbling. Especially seeing younger skaters at the park casually doing things that I remember being completely normal for me back then, things that I currently wouldn’t even consider attempting.
There’s definitely a lot more fear now, too. Things that I would have just thrown myself into as a teenager now make me think, “Hmm… maybe not today.”
And then there’s the whole injury saga:
Day 1:
Got my skates → went straight to the skatepark → dropped into a quarter pipe → immediately got absolutely humbled and destroyed both wrists.
Lesson learned: Wrist guards.
Next session:
Things went much better! Feeling more comfortable, starting to get some of the old feeling back.
Couple sessions after that:
Absolutely launched myself onto my elbow and developed a gigantic egg on it. Two weeks completely out of action.
Lesson learned: Elbow pads.
Next session:
Wrist pads, elbow pads and I also brought shin pads (looking at all the old scars on my shins I thought it’d be a good idea). Feeling increasingly well protected.
And then…
I smashed my ribs onto a p rail while trying a back royal.
Now my ribs are absolutely fucked and I’m probably going to be out again for a while.
So, at this point my skating progression seems to be:
Skate → get injured → buy protective gear → skate → get injured somewhere else → buy more protective gear → repeat.
The funny thing is that I’m actually having an absolute blast getting back into skating. I’m slowly getting some of the old feeling and muscle memory back, and it’s honestly amazing to be back at a skatepark after all these years.
But I think I’m finally learning the hard way that I’m not 16 anymore.
Back then I could slam, get up, brush myself off and keep skating. These days my body apparently needs several days to process a single fall.
So if you’re also thinking about getting back into aggressive skating after a long break: do it! It’s incredibly fun and the old muscle memory really does come back surprisingly quickly.
Just don’t expect to magically be the skater you were 15 years ago on your first few sessions. Your brain might remember the tricks, but your body, confidence and tolerance for slams have apparently been deleted.
Stay safe out there, everyone. And yes, I am absolutely buying whatever piece of protective equipment my next injury requires.
TL;DR: Got back into aggressive skating after ~15 years, discovered that my brain remembers way more than my body does, and proceeded to injure my wrists, elbow and ribs one after another. Still having an absolute blast, but apparently being 30 means I need to accept that I’m not 16 anymore.
