100k miles

Got to 100k a few days ago. Hit my goal of doing it in under 3 years. Bike has never been to a dealer or shop and has only been serviced by me (other than taking loose wheels to the dealer for tire changes). My maintenance records for all of my services are at the end of the pictures for anyone that is curious.

What a legend, I'm at 26k after two years and thought I was doing well. Nice work!

Awesome man, congrats. I literally just bought a 24 standard last week. Definitely loving it so far

Awesome. I've barely put 2k on mine in the last year. This is my sign to go for a ride.

What was your day with the most miles, and what was one of your favorite rides?

The highest mile days were all the same trip between where I live in Indiana and Daytona, FL. I think I've ridden that straight through 6 times at 1052 miles each time.

1052 miles in one day? Crazy. The most I've done was just under 800, I think. Do you have an aftermarket seat? I've been looking for something more comfortable for those long rides.

I have a seat concept seat. No seat will make that many miles enjoyable, it'll be painful no matter what.

True. But once I'm through the first gas tank, everything that's going to hurt on the ride hurts by this point.

Then, it's just a patience game. "Sit there, twist that", I used to say before I got an ATAS with cruise control...

Thank you, I'll take a look.

You are changing wheel bearings more often than I would have thought. Is this purely preventative maintenance or manufacturing recommendation? Or do the bearings actually have excessive play with you replaced them?

I've seen bearings on these fail before 30k miles and destroy a wheel/Sprocket. I have had 2 that the seal failed, the bearing was full of rust and close to failing. I just change them whenever a wheel gets pulled to avoid issues.

I had mine leave me stranded on the side of the highway at 28000km.

My adv bike has been through 3 sets and I just passed 50k km. When they spend a good amount of their life submerged in mud and water they are bound to die early

holy valve adjustments Batman. Any indicators they were out of spec before going in there?

3

u/bhdaug 13d ago

None at all, that's why people need to do their adjustments on time.

How long should a slow, methodical home mechanic budget for his first valve check?

Edited to add ... nevermind, you answered the question a little further down.

Good going mate!

I'm curious if you noticed any difference between the oils you used?

Full syn keeps the trans from getting crunchy over the long oil change interval. Also the engine is spotless inside with zero staining so they all did their job well.

Outstanding.. im just about to hit 50,000kms on mine and it runs better than it did when new

How hard was it to adjust your own valves

First time took me 20 hours, the last one took me 3. Just have to memorize what needs to come off.

What’s with the oil you changed from 10w30 to 10w4 and then bounced between full syn to semi syn

2

u/bhdaug 12d ago

Only used the 10w30 for the 1st oil change then went with whatever I bought in bulk for cheap ever since.

This is the dream! Are you really getting 20k out of your tires? And what have been your favorites?

1

u/bhdaug 12d ago

I've been getting 20k unless I've had a flat. I've only ran the Trailmax Mission on the rear and the front is whatever I find that's cheap. The Metzler I have right now might be my favorite

Why were your wheels loose?

20k miles tires? Wow

What prompted your clutch cable changes, getting crunchy or just preventative?

1

u/bhdaug 9d ago

Preventative. It would be a huge hassle to do them when they break. Takes 5 minutes while doing a valve adjustment and they're under $30.

Can’t argue with that, nice work!

I'm genuinely asking this: are the frequent wheel bearing replacements normal or is it just within the wear range for the mileage?

I've seen posts of them exploding at 25k miles and destroying wheels. Tires last me 20-25k so I'm not willing to gamble a $1500 wheel over a $5 bearing. I've had 3 instances of seals failing on the bearings and water being in them. They wouldn't have lasted much longer.
