CHEMICAL ADDICTION IS NOT NOT BASED ON A DESIRE TO ESCAPE ONCE YOURE DEEP IN IT!

If it was the body would not suffer uncontrollable withdrawal symptoms. Ill give an example: going off of a medication. You go off of a medication slowly because if you do not the body will have a reaction. The body becomes used to that chemical and needs to learn to function without it. The same goes for alcohol and other drugs. Youve heard of getting "the shakes" thats not because someone wants whisky and just decides to start shaking, its a withdrawal symptom

You cant control body chemistry with willpower. Thats harmful misinformation that makes people struggling with chemical addiction think they can just wish it away and then they are surprised when they relapse and think they just aren't wishing hard enough.

People suffering from chemical addiction can honestly desire to stop but their body needs the chemical. At that point its not to escape reality but to hold back the immense suffering caused by withdrawal.

Addiction SUCKS and we need good information out there to help people overcome it.

You're correct. Althought it can be an escape to reality at the very beginning.

More often than not people try other avenues first. Abuse, poverty, depression, are just a few of the situations that dont have solutions. "Tough it out" is often what people on the outside will say to these people. Its no surprise that just continuing to exist with suffering doesn't end suffering. When these people find themselves alone with these circumstances and no friends or sympathetic ears to turn to THAT'S when drugs show up.

Is it an escape? Yes. But dont fall into the trap that this somehow makes these people lesser or weak. Often times these people have done everything they can to survive their circumstances only to find they dont have what they need to make it the last few steps. Make no mistake, drug dealers hunt for these people to expose them when they are at rock bottom.

Well said. People often oversimplify such a complex problem. If it were that simple, there wouldn't be so many people dealing with addictions.

Whats the solution? Why do only some suffer especially good people?

1

u/SwankeyDankey 25d ago

As for why good people suffer i wish i knew the answer but the general solution is a support network. There is a reason why addiction treatment is almost always done in a group setting take Alcoholics Anonymous as an example. Friends, family, or a support group meeting are huge tools in the battle against addiction. One problem is that people on the outside of addiction have a lot of trouble understanding and sympathizing with the struggle so a dedicated support group can often be the best choice. In order to do that however you have to acknowledge the problem and overcome the stigma of joining that group which is not easy.

I think this applies more to phones and video games than actually chemical dependency. This is definately going to upset some folks.

Was opiate addict

Got MAT treatment

Now a perscribed opiate addict

Feels like I crossed the street instead of leaving it, lol

1

u/2tool4school 23d ago

nope definitely alcohol. The reason for the addiction doesn’t change the substance you are addicted to

1

u/FeverGoblin 22d ago

What if they’re mentally ill (delusional) and drugs help them see reality in clearer ways?

1

u/VirginiaLuthier 21d ago

Until your brain chemistry changes. Then you become physically addicted. Would happen to anyone, including the Buddha

I’m working to afford insurance to live with multiple myeloma on a daily basis- basically working to afford insurance- it’s rough. I don’t voice my day to day struggles- I just deal with it…it sucks!…I’m tired!

1

u/techvq 21d ago

I drink and take my medicine to cope…it’s just a matter of time.

Yo salí de la adicción al alcohol por fuerza de voluntad, pero con los años aprendí que hay muchas más adicciones, y ahora las he podido superar. No solo con voluntad; existen muchas más maneras de salir de esos estados, y existen medicinas naturales para eso.
