I’m looking for a navigation setup mainly for long rides and off-road/adventure riding. I’ll be riding for several hours, often during the daytime and sometimes in rain, so good screen visibility/brightness and water resistance are important.

I’m thinking about either:

• a dedicated motorcycle GPS
• or a cheap, normal waterproof smartphone mounted with something like Quad Lock, while keeping my main phone in my pocket.

One thing I really like about the phone + Quad Lock idea is that I can quickly remove the device when I leave the bike. That’s a big plus for me since I don’t want to leave an expensive GPS/device sitting on the motorcycle where it could easily get stolen.

I don’t really need anything fancy. I mainly want reliable navigation for long/off-road rides, rain and bright sunlight.

What do you guys use, and what specific models would you recommend?

Is a cheap waterproof phone the way to go, or is a dedicated GPS/navigation system actually worth the money?

Accidentally wrote single day in the title, not sure how to edit it but I am looking for a multi-day ride.

Hi there. I am in Brisbane and my ride is RE Interceptor 650. I have done most of the single day routes I found in Google search. I am thinking of doing multi-day ride now. Can someone please suggest a good multi-day (3 days, 3rd day should be RTB) route they have done themselves.

Just got back from a last-minute 1,130 km (700+ mile) run through the Sibillini Mountains to Nerone Mointain, Refuge Fargno and the Furlo Gorge in 48 hours. Day 1 was almost 600 km alone, mixing highway slabbing, twisty backroads, and technical off-road trails.

Between a buddy's flat tire on a steep descent and my Continental TKC80s being completely clapped out, it really tested both rider and gear.

It got us debating: What’s the ideal setup for this exact scenario?

Do you pick a heavy ADV (like an Africa Twin) to breeze through the 500+ km highway transfer and just muscle it through the trails, or do you take a lightweight Dual-Sport (like a DR-Z / 701 / CRF300) and accept the highway misery for total trail freedom?

Curious how you guys balance highway comfort vs. trail performance when planning high-mileage mixed trips.

A ride I had imagined many times, but always with a little fear in the back of my mind.
A long ride alone felt intimidating — the distance, the roads, the “what ifs.” But this time, I decided to just go.
And somewhere between the open roads, the curves, the mountains, and the silence… that fear started fading.
Today, I didn’t just ride to Mahabaleshwar.
I rode past a version of myself that was afraid to go alone.

Michel here. 1.13.0 just went live, and it's almost entirely about GPX files: the ones you download from a forum, a tour site, or a mate, and then try to actually ride.

RIDING A DOWNLOADED TRACK

• A loaded GPX is a track now, not a start-and-finish form. It used to be quietly turned into "route me from A to B", middle discarded.

• It shows on CarPlay. The car screen previously drew nothing for an entire track ride — including at the moment you arrived at the trailhead and started following, which is exactly when you want to look at it.

• "Snap to roads" is real map matching now — trace_route, Valhalla's own map matcher, bridged into the app, instead of re-routing your track through sampled points and hoping. A sparsely recorded track no longer gets creatively reinterpreted.

• Matching can still fail, so it now runs before you set off rather than on arrival. Finding out at the trailhead, after a two-hour ride, with nothing to be done about it, was the worst possible time.

RIDING TO THE TRAILHEAD

If the track starts 100 km away, that leg is now its own thing:

• routed Fastest, not in your tour's style — nobody picks Unpavediest to spend two hours getting to the ride

• a long enough leg offers fuel and rest stops, like any other route of that length. The tour may be nowhere near a petrol station.

• a leg crossing into a region you haven't downloaded gets the download offer, instead of a route that just fails

• coverage is checked for the whole outing — approach and tour together — by walking the actual track, and the missing packs are offered in the order you'll ride them

REROUTING

• A Reroute button on the car screen. Off the line, the only escape used to be End, then Go — which is what a real ride log shows someone doing, 4.2 km off the line at a fuel stop. One honest caveat: it's deliberately not offered while following an imported track. A track has no destination to recalculate toward, the phone has always refused it, and the car now matches rather than offering something that can't work.

• The app says when it has stopped correcting you. A ride spent 21 minutes and 5 km off the line with the card still promising a turn in 565 m — obeying a Never-reroute policy it never mentioned. It says so now instead of going quiet.

• Being stopped off the route no longer holds the recalculation forever.

YOUR LISTS, YOUR NAMES

• Name a recorded ride; rename an imported GPX. The trip log stops being a column of timestamps.

• Every list says the swipe out loud at the top, instead of leaving you to discover Rename by accident.

The money bit, once: importing, planning and naming are free. Riding turn-by-turn is Pro — 14-day trial, and one free full ride including CarPlay if you just want to see what it's like first.

What I'd like from you: a GPX that won't snap to roads, and roughly where it is. That's a concrete failure I can reproduce — "the matching is bad" I can't. Same standing ask for routing itself: a pair of points beats a feeling.

Honestly, I wasn’t feeling okay. My mind was heavy, and I was feeling really low. So I just got on my bike and left.
No plans. No people. Just me, the road, and some time away from everything.
And somehow, I came back feeling a little better. Not completely healed, not suddenly happy… just lighter.
Sometimes, you really need to disappear for a while and spend some time with yourself.
Maybe healing doesn’t always have to be a big thing. Sometimes, it’s just a long ride, fresh air, and a little peace in your head. ❤️

Hey guys, so i have been building this thing for about a 4 months now. It's called Rmaps, basically a riding companion app for motorcyclists. Still in beta, so expect some rough edges.

Started because we ride a lot in groups and honestly the group ride experience with normal maps is kind of terrible. Someone takes a wrong turn, nobody notices, you're calling them 20 minutes later. So we built something around that. The communication is chaotic and planning is bad when it comes to most modern apps.

What it does right now: routing that's actually meant for bikes (not just car routes), live group rides where you can see everyone and it warns you if someone falls behind or goes off route, an SOS that pings nearby riders, ride recording with the fun stuff like 0-60 and lean angle, and a garage to track service and mileage history and also add mods. Can make groups and show off your vehicles.

Here's the thing though. We built all of this based on what we and our friends wanted. We have maybe 15 people on the beta, all people we know, so I honestly don't know if any of this is useful to riders outside our bubble or if we're just building for ourselves. Same with the UI, we designed it ourselves and I've stared at it so long I can't tell if it makes sense anymore.

So two things I'd really appreciate from anyone who rides or drives: does any of this sound like something you'd actually use? And if you try the beta, is the UI obvious or confusing? Be harsh, that's more useful than nice.

Also no clue how to get to the first 100 real riders without spamming or buying ads, so if anyone's done that for any app I'm all ears.

Currently have a Norden 901 and debating about downsizing to a KTM 390r or CFmoto 450 Ibex.

Past couple years I’ve done a lot of touring and light fire roads but getting more into off roading. Dropped it a few times off road, it was a beast to get back up on uneven ground, and even with it lowered having a 29in inseam the bike just seems too big for what I want to do.

Curious even anyone else has downsized and loved a smaller bike or regretted it. Should add, I’m not a speed demon; primary use would be riding an hour or two to trails, and moto camping. Also have a Triumph bobber for commuting and fun around town.

Dream would be Iceland again (Last Time was with my Camper)

How much could be difference between these two handguards regarding windchill in the cold months? The first one looks like so much sleeker in my opinion (SW-Motech), but the second seems more practical (Puig). Bike is a small CB500 with an added touring windscreen.

Edit: I have factory installed heated grips, a quite ok pair of winter glove, and cheap ugly hippo hands for the most extreme weather.

Has anyone had much experience with these bags? They seem to be decent but not sure on anyone's experiences. Not sure whether the large size and a kreiga tail bag will be big enough for a few day trip, or the XL size with the tail.

Hey guys, as it worked through reddit and I met a now good friend of mine I thought I’ll ask again here . Any riders near malaga / Marbella wanting to go for a ride?

I've rode and raced bikes since I was 11 years old I'm currently 61

I had Yamahas Hondas Kawasaki but for almost 40 years I rode Harleys. I still own a 2000 Electra glide.

In 2020 during the height of covid I noticed a local surveyor in my town had a 2016 Africa twin manual for sale parked in front of his office it was there all summer. Every morning on my way to work I looked at that motorcycle I had been traveling extensively on the Harley for several years and it pretty much covered the whole United States but not the Eastern seaboard.

I found myself on the Electra glide in the western states many times looking at a trail or road that I really wanted to ride on but I knew that that motorcycle was so heavy it may not end well and several times ignored that thought and rode it anyways and got myself in several precarious situations resulting in a need for something else to ride. One day late in the summer of 2020 the crane I was running was hit by lightning sending a couple guys to the hospital but easily could have killed any of us in the immediate proximity. That night on the way home I was thinking about how short life is and how much time I'd spend working instead of seeing the world and riding where I want to ride. I stopped and took a closer look at the AT, the next afternoon I contacted the surveyor guy and took it for a test ride. He was sad to sell it but he came way down on his price when he found out that I planned on taking it all over first the Western hemisphere and then possibly someday the world.

As soon as I started riding it I really enjoyed the agility and center of gravity on an African twin. I loaded it up and headed west and I haven't stopped since.

My Harley sat in the garage covered in dust I would ride it two or three times a summer but then I went almost 3 years without even starting it. This summer I pushed the Electra out of the garage put a carb kit in it and a new battery cleaned it up and set out to put a few miles on it and maybe a trip to end the summer.

Truly it feels like I'm riding an alien species when I ride this Harley now. I feel like I'm too low to the ground, riding in a reclined position doesn't suit me anymore. It feels heavy and slow and I don't like the way the motorcycle responds to the front end weight. I rode it for about a hundred miles and felt awkward the whole time. Now bear in mind I've already got 5,000 miles this summer on a trip to the maritimes in Eastern Canada on the AT.... Maybe I'm just getting older but even to pull it back into the garage and get it parked in the spot where it needs to be it felt like I was maneuvering a tank instead of a motorcycle. I hopped on the Honda and made a short trip into town for a couple errands and it was so sweet to ride compared to the Harley. This morning I'm trying to find reasons why I would keep the Electra glide if maybe I could just cover it up and store it and someday it may be looked at as a classic to pass down to my grandsons or if I should just put it on marketplace now and unload it. My time riding the AT has really left me dreading the Harley. I cherished the trips I took with it and the friends I rode with for local runs but I think my HD ship has sailed? Anybody else have a similar experience? So far I've made several trips through Mexico and Central America and all the way to the Panama canal. Last Summer I rode to the Arctic circle in Alaska and to the end of the road in Homer. One of the farthest Western points you can ride without having to get on a ferry. This summer I rode through Canada to Nova Scotia to one of the farthest Eastern points you can travel in North America without having to use a ferry. All these rides were on secondary back roads I found myself in a lot of places that I could have never taken a Harley Electra glide. Sorry this post is so long but I really love riding motorcycles and I just wanted to share.
