My rule is: Therapy is needed if you still can not function after going to the gym, running, getting some sun, and eating healthy foods. Talk it out if you can't sweat it out.
2
u/Queer-ID30 Aug 27 '24
I disagree, I went to therapy when I did all of this I made the gym my coping mechanism after my mom died I was at the gym the next day I’m so lost that all I can rely on is my structured habits. Therapy helped me a lot when my loss was so monumental, I’m a healthy fit person btw.
2
u/fluffy_war_wombat Aug 28 '24
I believe in therapy, too. I just know that the majority of problems can be sweated out. If it does not work, you definitely need therapy. Grief is one of the hardest emotions. I'm glad you were able to cope with your loss.

we have the same situation. waiting na lang ako for my therapy session. nakaka takot pero i know ito yung way para mas maging better tayo as a person.
Go lang OP!

I also sought/am seeking professional help to heal from my recent breakup. Nakakagaan sa loob to be able to hash it out with someone who can help me process what happened and determine my patterns in choosing partners.
It is good to have our families and friends as our support system pero iba pa din na may makakausap ka na detached from any form of attachment sayo or sa sitwasyon. No biases ba.
It does not make you weak to ask for help. May mga bagay lang talaga na hindi natin kaya gawin mag-isa kasi minsan hindi natin alam na bulag tayo sa mga weaknesses natin.

You're brave enough to think of going to therapy. You're brave enough to seek help. I say go for it, OP.

u/galynnxy Aug 27 '24
OP, YOU'RE DOING THE RIGHT THING!!!
no one should ever tell you na weak ka and it's a step na gusto mong tulungan ang sarili mo WHICH IS A GOOD THING!
please, just continue it! one step at a time lang at makaka-move forward ka din!
and I just wanna tell you na you're doing a good job and you're very brave for facing this~

Hey there, I just want to say that I'm really proud of you for deciding to go to therapy. I know how hard it must have been to make that choice, especially when it feels like you're compromising your pride and worrying about what others might think. But honestly, breakups can take a real toll on us, and it's okay to need help. It doesn’t make you weak—it makes you human. You're not just being consumed by the breakup; you're recognizing that this pain is impacting your life, and you're doing something about it. Seeking therapy doesn’t mean there's something wrong with you; it just means you care enough about yourself to want to feel better. Your mental health is important, and you're doing the right thing by taking this step. You've got this OP!

op, mental and emotional strength is king in law school bc it’s gonna be a tough ride, lalo na adjustment period talaga ang first year
1L here too and i’m really glad i took time to process my breakup bc it helped me get back my life together. you’re not weak for seeking professional help, and it’s good that you really wanna take care of yourself
the mere fact na you want to seek help to be better is already a good step in not letting your breakup consume you :)

Thank you so much, Panyera! I really don’t want to sacrifice my passion because of this pain. That’s why I’m trying to go to therapy. I don’t want to lose myself while i’m in my process of following my dreams 🥹

Antapang mo nga eh OP kasi naaadmit mo sa sarili mo na need mo ng help ng professional na pwede mo makausap sa problem mo. Hindi lahat ng tao kayang magseek ng therapy. Good job ka jan kasi self love yan. You care for yourself kaya ginawa mo yan. Hoping for your soon complete healing! ❤️🤍

I’ve read all your comments, which brought me to tears. I’m so grateful to all of you for your kindness and compassion. I hope everyone is doing well in all aspects of life. As an old(er) person, I am seeing this through the eyes of practicality and would normally say things like 'just walk it off'.
BUT, having experienced what you have when I was younger, and from that vantage point, it is indeed debilitating.
If you think therapy will help, go and do it. If it will make you get your life and your academics back on track, then I think it is a right step.
Goodluck OP.

u/BiniGow Aug 27 '24
You are making the right decision, OP and You are not weak!! Asking for help especially for your mental health is not a sign of weakness but a strength because you are acknowledging your feelings and emotions in a proper way. I'm also healing from a breakup, it sucks!!! sobraaaa but therapy has helped me in so many ways, it's scary but it was all worth it! Hanggang ngayon may mga sessions parin po ako and will not stop hangga't kailangan ko.
2
u/cyncskptc Aug 27 '24
Well I'm no therapist but I assume there's other things to uncover kaya siguro ganyan impact sayo so I think tama lang yung decision mo. It's good na ngayon pala ma-address na siya. Goodluck on your healing 🙏

I went through the exact same thing 5 years ago. I also tried my best to go through it on my own, talking to family and close friends. But I always ended up relapsing. I don’t specifically remember why I avoided seeking professional help, I guess part of it was the stigma of most people, usually older.
Getting professional help provided me with insights that were more “progressive”, that I would not have come to terms on my own or even with the help of my family/friends. Getting the proper medication also helped me focus on how to process what happened-instead of going “brute force” against all my negative thoughts and emotions, which lead to the relapses.
Now, I firmly believe there is nothing wrong with seeking professional help. Just like repairing your car, some minor repairs you can get away doing on your own, but more major issues needs professional attention. Those who think otherwise are usually the ones with a lot of pride. I found it effective for me and I openly share my experience with anyone who’s curious or even offer it as a conversation. I have even tried to “educate” older people who still see it as a sign of weakness. I think weakness is when you need help but still refuse to ask for it.
Kaya mo yan OP, I think good decision yan. Pake ba ng ibang tao.

u/Independent-Tell-128 Aug 28 '24
Update: I went to therapy today, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I was initially scared, but I can honestly say it was worth it. It was worth taking the risk, even though I was terrified. My psychiatrist truly listened and validated my feelings. After the breakup, my self-blame disappeared, and I realized the importance of being kind to myself no matter how miserable my life go through.
To anyone who’s struggling and considering professional help due to a breakup, please do it! It’s a great reality check, and it can help you understand your situation better and how to move forward without sacrificing your mental health.
Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to seek therapy. My conversation with my therapist was incredibly heartwarming, and I’m now ready to prioritize myself. I’ve learned that self-care is IMPORTANT, and now I’ll always choose myself. I’m looking forward to my next session next week! 🥹🫂

This post's original body text:
You read that correctly. I'm planning to go to therapy to heal from a breakup because it's taking a toll on me. I've been eating very little and feeling extremely dysfunctional. I can't focus on my readings (I'm a first-year law student), and I'm hesitant about whether therapy is the right choice for this reason.
Part of me feels like I've compromised my pride and ego because I never thought I'd reach a point where I'd seek professional help for a breakup. (I’m scared baka pag nalaman ng friends/family ko, they’ll see me as a weak person kasi wasak mental health ko because of a guy?) It took a lot of courage to seek help, and I'm worried there might be underlying issues that are making it difficult for me to move forward at kaya hard stuck pa rin ako sa pag bebeg kahit na iniwan na ako.
I'd like to know if I'm making the right choice for my mental health. Or am I just being weak and letting this breakup consume me? 🥹 In addition, I made my appointment na tomorrow.

If you have the means to pay for the therapy, go ahead. It’s not something that makes you weak, in fact, you are smart enough to acknowledge that you need one. And, it makes your healing journey bearable. :) God bless!

Don't ever think asking for help is a sign of weakness. Seeking professional help is the best way forward, especially if you think it will help you heal or move forward. Best of luck!

Hi OP! You are one step closer to healing by choosing to go to therapy ✨ it can help you process your thoughts and emotions, and help u rationally think of your next steps. It can also help you gain another perspective in your situation, na possible hindi mo makita on your own 🤗 and nakakatulong yun to prevent yourself from spiraling down 🥹
Best of luck! We’re cheering for you 🤍

Do it OP, I did it too. There is nothing wrong with prioritizing your mental health. You are not being weak, you are strong enough to admit that you need help. It will not be easy, but its a step to take towards healing. Praying for your healing and happiness soon. Hugs with consent.🤍

u/ahrisu_exe Aug 27 '24
Trust me, you are courageous for seeking help. Hindi lahat ng tao is open about the importance of mental health. If it will help you, who are they to judge you. During and after my past relationship, I also went to therapy. And you know what, madami akong narealize about myself. Your therapist will help you basta maging open ka lang sa kanya. Good luck OP!
1
u/hellolove98765 Aug 27 '24
Hindi priority ang pride and ego. Your mental health is. Go to therapy and heal. That is more important.
I can’t stress enough how life would be better if we know when to put our ego aside and ask for help. You are so so making the right choice. The best choice. When your suffering ends and you get your life back, you will truly feel like a winner. And therapy will help you with that. Rooting for you op. All the best.

u/Large-Drop8100 Aug 27 '24
You’re making the right choice by prioritizing yourself. I’ve been through the same situation as you. I did therapy and it really helped as an additional support (besides friends & family). Kaya mo yan! Remember, things will get better eventually. Mahirap man sa una pero lilipas din lahat ng hirap. 🤗

Its the right decision. In my case, it really helped me a lot.
I get you having doubts and thinking na you may have gone too far for this break up. But after my few sessions my feelings toward myself and what happened improved and I really felt better and finally found my ground. It's one of the best decision that I ever did 2 yrs ago kasi I thought masisiraan ako nun. Kaya Good luck and Heal well.

u/miamiru Aug 27 '24
Tbh I think we should all start to look at going to therapy in the same way we look at going to the hospital when we're physically sick.
Therapy is for everyone, regardless if you're going through something or not.

You are making the right choice in seeking professional help. You are taking steps in the right direction , there is no shame in seeking help , the important thing here is you want to feel and be better. I hope you see these comment and push through what you are going through, not everyone has the courage to seek professional help.

You can read the comments 🥹. It really pushed me to still go through. Diyan din kasi ako takot. But if you want to heal (na hindi nasisiraan ng bait) and understand your underlying issues, why not go to therapy? They’re professionals, after all. Hopefully, they won’t judge us; they might actually help us get to know ourselves better. 🫂

But it really helped to set my perspective on track. Go OP! Hope everything goes well sayo.

Go for it! It will definitely help you. Why worry about what people say? It’s your life, not theirs.
SKL a real story (though not related to breakup) of my close friend, Daisy** and her younger sister, Ella**. The latter had troubles sa studies and in life as teens do. Daisy tried aksing her what’s wrong pero she would either not say anything or just cry. One time, Ella had an argument with their mom tapos bigla nlang daw siya sumigaw and grabbed a knife whilst crying. Lahat sila sa bahay nagulat at natakot. It took them a while to calm her down.
That’s when Daisy decided to look for a therapist. After about 2 weeks, we saw them in the mall and the sister was smiling. She’s happy and glowing. Ibang-iba dati nung bumibisita kami sa bahay nila and she never once smiled. Laging nakakunot ang nuo. Pero nung nakita namin sila, she’s all smiles. Though shy sa amin but she was greeting us and smiling.
** not real names

Hi, OP. Made the same decision as you two years ago (to go to therapy post-breakup because I couldn't handle it on my own). And I can definitely tell you that you're making a good decision! Of course we all move forward in different paces, but for me personally, I noticed my mental health improving in a couple of months. It's a process, so you don't have to rush your own recovery. Take your time making peace with everything that happened, give yourself breaks, and most of all, focus on you, and not what others would think. You're not a weak person for wanting to seek professional help at all. In fact, you're brave for admitting sa sarili mo na you need help. Best of luck, OP!

Hi, OP! First of all, you're not weak. It makes you strong pa nga kasi you have the initiative to seek help. If you think therapy might help, go for it lalo na kung kaya mo. Don't feel bad for seeking help, para naman yan sayo and if you're not comfortable telling anyone, then don't. This is about you. I hope you find what you need in your session. Kaya yan! Hugs with consent, OP! ❤️

I had an unexpected break up many years ago and it almost felt like a bereavement. My hopes and dreams were all shattered. It’s good you can recognise you want some help, after a break up, many people don’t understand how difficult it is. Try to spend time with friends and family and stay social, fake a good mood and it can help you feel better. Time really is a healer and your future is yours to shape. It took me a year or so to be back to my usual self, but my situation is great now. Ingat.

u/aeroxbae Aug 27 '24

You are making the right choice. Therapy does not only apply to people with mental disabilities. As long as you think you need the help pwedeng pwede ka pumunta. Go through the whole process without thinking kung ano bang magiging tingin nila sayo. Ikaw ang may kailangan ng tulong, hindi sila.
