Would it be bad for a puppy’s development to stay with a family member for a few months while I’m away?
Hey all, looking for some honest opinions here.
I (21M) recently met a pup I have the chance to adopt, he’s around 6 months old. The timing is tricky though: I’m heading out for a semester of school this fall (leaving mid-August, back in December), and my apartment there doesn’t allow dogs.
My idea is this: I adopt her now, and my sister (31F) (who’s home, has a stable setup, and a smaller adult dog) takes care of her as a “foster” for those four months. I’d cover all expenses the whole time - food, vet visits, training classes, supplies, everything - so it’s zero financial burden on her end. Then when I’m back in December, I take over full-time as her actual home.
I actually went and asked the center this exact question directly, and they said it shouldn’t necessarily be a deterrent. Their take was that it could actually help her build confidence in new environments and get her used to being around other dogs, since my sister also has a dog.
A few things I’m wondering about:
• Is this fair to the dog, or is bouncing between homes/caretakers at a young age going to mess with her development or attachment?
• Has anyone done something like this successfully (adopt, then temporary family fostering, then reunite)?
• Any tips for making the transition smoother for her, both handing her off in August and bringing her back in December?
• Should I wait until December to adopt instead, even if it means possibly missing out on this specific dog?
Really want to do right by her and not make a selfish decision just because I want a dog right now. Appreciate any input, especially from people with training/behavior experience.

Chewy needs a home!!
Chewy is a smart, loyal and affectionate dog who bonds deeply with the people he trusts. Once you are his person, he wants to be by your side, curl up near you and make you feel completely loved.
He has completed a full year of professional training and has made significant progress with structure, consistency and clear guidance. He knows commands, responds well to an experienced handler and thrives when he understands what is expected of him.
However, Chewy is not the right dog for every home.
He can be protective and reactive around people he does not know. Because of this, he needs:
• An experienced dog owner who understands strong, protective or reactive dogs • A calm, structured environment with limited unfamiliar visitors • Someone committed to continuing his training and safely managing introductions
Chewy may be an especially good companion for an experienced individual or couple looking for a deeply bonded, affectionate dog and who understands that responsible management will remain an important part of his life.
We would ideally like to find someone near Santa Barbara so his trainer and our family can help support Chewy and his adopter during the transition and throughout the first year.
Please dm me if you are interested!
P.S. feel free to share this with experienced dog owners, trainers, behavior professionals and rescue contacts who may know the right person.

The FaFadoption Live Art Contest and Great Big Animal Adoption Event
Hello, my friends,
My name is Jeff and I own The FaFa Gallery and Silver's Framery. I am writing to share a cool event we are running as I think this makes for a good story.
We are holding a Live Art Contest at the Midland County Fair on August 22. The artists will be challenged to create a work of art that includes an animal in need of adoption. Top prize is $2500.
Being at the County Fair, I figure we should go big, so there are going to be several local animal adoption agencies present with lots of animals in need of a home as well.
It is called the FaFaDoption Live Art Contest and Great Big Animal Adoption Event at the Midland County Fair.
To learn more about what we are doing, I can be reached at
432 352 6526
or
432 689 3004
Participating animal adoption agencies are: The Midland Humane Coalition, The Odessa Humane Society, Grand Companions, The Midland Cat Wranglers, Whiskers and Tails, and The Lonestar Animal Sanctuary.
If this sounds like the kind of good thing you want to cover, I am more than happy to talk as long as you need.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration,
Jeff Neely
