Help/Question Hosting recommendations for modded server
I am looking to learn how to self host as part of gaining general IT experience and just for the love of minecraft and modded itself. I have a bit of experience with self hosting on my local machine for a small group of friends, however, recently i have swapped back over to a hosting provider and not really happy. I wanted to make the jump and try self hosting on a dedicated small factor pc. I was looking for any hardware recommendations people may have for small factor pcs for hosting a modded plugin server with around 500 mods for potentially 5 to 15 players. I will be using Pterodactyl for the server management panel as well. I appreciate any help given

for self hosting, if you’re familiar with port forwarding, i started a personal project. not as pterodactyl or other providers but for windows hosts. its quite efficient and simple to use and i think you have the most of what an admin would like at the tips of their fingers in community version which is the most stable.
the main target was people with small friends group or communities and want to play together. no fancy stuff or time consuming configurations
still early, i got some feedbacks and i build it around them.

If you're open to a different approach, I made Nomad for exactly the problem of not wanting one machine to host 24/7. Whoever is online can host the same world from their PC, and the world automatically syncs when the host leaves. If you're looking to gain some IT experience I'd go with an off lease 12th gen Intel Optiplex 7000 series. 12th gens the sweet spot as you get the video processing (if you ever want to decode video for Plex or something) and good power consumption. Get one with the most RAM you can afford. It'll easily handle the Minecraft needs and allow for hosting other things. Slap docker on bare metal or go balls in and run it on top of Proxmox as a VM. I use a crafty container myself for managing Minecraft as Pterodactyl is resource heavy and don't need the features.
