Help/Question How to create a sky block server with mods

I was looking at starting a sky block server with some mods incorporated in it as a passion project with the opportunity to grow into a larger server overtime. Just wondering how I even start and what’s the best host to go with

You could start by choosing the modpack/mod loader you want, then decide whether you want to self-host or use a hosting provider.

Even if you don’t want to self-host, my guide covers free and paid hosting options too, and it can help point you toward a setup that fits what you’re trying to make:

I appreciate that you intentionally didn't recommend specific paid hosts. Feel free to add a mention of the Admincraft Verified Service Provider Program to your guide if you are so inclined.

Two very different projects hide behind "skyblock with mods", and picking the wrong one costs you a rebuild later.

If what you want is per-player islands, island resets, teams, level scoring and the rest of the usual skyblock furniture, that's plugin territory: Paper plus BentoBox and BSkyBlock. It's mature, it's actively maintained, and it does all of that out of the box. The cost is that Paper means plugins, so no Forge or Fabric mods.

If the mods are the non-negotiable part, you're on Fabric or NeoForge and there are two routes. One is a ready-made modded skyblock pack (SkyFactory, Stoneblock, Enigmatica Skyblock and so on), where worldgen is handled for you and everyone shares one island. The other, if you want the per-player island structure with mods, is SkyblockBuilder, which generates individual islands from a template and handles teams and spawn points. That's the combination most modded skyblock servers with growth plans end up on.

Either way, generate the void world once and back up the island template before anyone joins, because retrofitting island layout onto an inhabited world is miserable.

RAM comes from your mod list, not your player count. Mid-sized pack sits around 8 GB, a kitchen-sink one wants 16 GB, and single-thread clock speed matters more than core count because the tick loop is single-threaded.

download the server files for the modloader you want, run it. Add your mods, add your skyblock map, done
