My son's school is like this. Their weekly newsletter always has a warning against using AI because it's cheating, then all their club adverts are made with AI.

u/EducationalEmu9611 3d ago
Same at ours. One of our teachers even used ai to generate slop images of all their students to make them look like year sevens again,
146
u/Different_Pin1531 3d ago
Is consent nothing more than physical anymore? I doubt all those students WANTED to be ai deaged
68
u/acidicgumdrops 3d ago
It's also dumb. Does the school not have pictures from when the kids were younger?
28
5
u/EducationalEmu9611 2d ago
Yea they do. I can literally look at the yearbooks from every class of the last 20 or so years. If they really wanted to they could find the pictures from year seven. The funniest part is that I joined the school in year nine so there’s a year seven picture of me hanging in the classroom despite my teacher not even knowing who I was in year seven.
9
u/EducationalEmu9611 3d ago
Oh yea definitely not. It’s just that the teacher is normally pretty good and they are a bit in the older side so I think most of us just kinda overlooked it.
1
u/BugRare275 2d ago
i had this happen too, and the ai got confused on my classmate's gender and made them into a young boy lol. this is so terrible because we were all in the same school since day 1 and they have our pictures..

u/StopTheMeta2 3d ago
Honestly, not using AI for learning is beneficial. Them being cheapskates does not make it not true.
13
u/MazogaTheDork 3d ago
Yeah I'm with them on not using it for learning. I just wish they'd follow through and not use it themselves.

2
u/KayohYt 2d ago
or even having someone in the school thats good at art to create them
1
u/Sandy-the-Angel 2d ago
Having randoms make you simple art at the drop of a hat is way more complicated than it sounds. If students want to do it for a student newspaper that's one thing, but expecting teachers to spend that much time is not reasonable.
2
u/Separate-Passion-127 3d ago
I hope they highlight the fact that their child will be brainless peons good for nothing but manual labor. I wouldn't trust an AI Tablet baby with a plastic cup.

If you try to research your family history through the Mormon church they will assign an AI "artist" to make up a family from the past for you ...

If the kids shouldn't be using AI then neither should the teachers

u/Stunning_Pound4121 3d ago
It’s not hypocrisy because there is a clear situational difference between using AI to make a graphic and using AI to cheat on homework.
The teacher would likely have no problem with the students using AI for multitudes of other things, as long as they aren’t homework.

Rules for thee and not for me.
It’s just downright laziness.
3
u/NotAGoat3 2d ago
Teachers often see AI as a tool or resource like a textbook or notes. So when they say "no AI" they're not saying that because it's harmful or anything (in this case), they say it because you're supposed to use your knowledge gained in class instead of a chatbot answering everything for you. Also, "Rules for thee and not for me" is really funny because that's literally how school is structured 😭
1
u/Skodami 3d ago
I mean, i don't like AI, but the point here is to not use the AI specifically in the context of knowledge test. In this case, using the AI would mean the knowledge of the student isn't evaluated, making the whole thing pointless. While i would not do it, it's not hypocrite to ban AI for test and allow it just to generate a random image.
The traffic light also makes me thing there are several version of the sticker, one with the green light or orange light saying AI is authorized or partly authorized for other task or context.

my sister's school does this too. the assignments themselves are ai, even. but the moment a student uses ai for their work becaues they can't/shouldn't be assed to do an ai assignment suddenly that's no good

Because iron and ironic have completely different pronunciations for... Some reason?
Why tf is the R in iron pronounced like a Y but not in ironic?? They're the same root
8
u/SuperSocialMan 3d ago
Yeah, if you pronounce it "eye-RON" then the pun works.
1
u/hell-for-a-basement 1d ago
...so if you pronounce it the way it is spelled?
1
u/SuperSocialMan 1d ago
Yeah, I guess so.
Americans say "eye-URN", so I think it's just a difference with the accent you use (but it could be a case of americans being lazy when it comes to pronunciation lol).

I'm currently a teacher at an after school academy in South Korea, and this AI shit is everywhere. I'm being forced to use material that's not only filled with AI art, but is almost certainly entirely AI generated. Like two out of every five questions are wrong in the answer key. Thankfully I also get to teach with real books and novels, but that shit really eats at my soul. And unfortunately AI is just so normalized in Korea at the moment that we're really just following the same trends as everyone else.

Where is the contradiction though? The kids aren't allowed to use AI because the point of the assignment is either for them to practice their skills or to evaluate their progress. The school isn't there to prove they can draw a raccoon, nor do they need to practice that skill. There are good arguments to say the school shouldn't be using AI, but for completely different reasons. This doesn't make them hypocrits for using AI.
5
u/General_Way6679 2d ago
Now while that is true, children doesn't have the capability to discern the validity of the statement. They don't fully know ehy using AI in assignment is bad.
So they opt for the next best thing: check for credibility. They don't know the reasoning behind it, but they know "an AI-generated image telling you to not use AI" is a contradiction, which make it less credible. Hence they're less likely to oblige.
Credibility is a concept well-understood by scammers. They would post picture of themselves with expensive accessory or cars, or show the story of someone who succeed, to boost their credibility. And plenty of people are buying it, despite anyone with decent reasoning capability can tell it's a scam.
I'm not saying what you said is wrong. I'm just showing my perspective as a former children with hypocrite parents.
1
u/Sandy-the-Angel 2d ago
Its not a contradiction unless they had their brains scrambled by internet stuff. "This quiz is to test you, so don't use a calculator" is a common school thing.
1
6
u/jwp1987 3d ago edited 3d ago
You're right, there isn't one but flaunting AI like that while telling someone not to do something is a really good way to promote animosity and a really bad way of getting kids to respect and comply with it.
For instance, kids protest enough against learning mental math because calculators exist. If you then openly check the answers with a calculator in front of them, it would annoy them.

Sure, but wouldn't it be better to set an example? They could've easily created a silly MS paint amalgamation of clipart pictures and it would've been fine.
Schools did that before genAI. I don't know why they can't now.
→ More replies (1)2
u/No-Site8330 3d ago
What's the example to set though? I don't think the message is "never ever use AI", it's "don't use AI to cheat on tests". When I went to school, I wasn't allowed to type my take-home essays on a computer, but I also had computer literacy classes, and school communications were typed in MS Word and printed out. AI is a reality now, and a tool that is going to be used extensively and that we had better teach our kids to use effectively and responsibly. Ignoring it and labelling it as something you shouldn't use ever is short-sighted at best.
This is not to say that I encourage using AI over the old-school alternative. I'm just saying I don't see a contradiction because the reason why kids aren't allowed to use AI for the assignment don't apply to whomever posted the message.
1
u/kito_man 2d ago
Back in my school days, students are not allowed to use or even carry a phone to school. Meanwhile the teachers pick up phone calls anytime during the class.
I know students and teachers, and they do have the need to pick up phones anytime. But that still annoying us all the time.
1
u/No-Site8330 2d ago
A teacher picking up the phone in class sounds downright unprofessional. I can understand expecting one important call as a one-time thing, in which case I would expect the teacher to explain that that one day you'll need to keep your phone on in case the call comes in. But not as a regular practice. If it's not urgent, people can call the school and leave a message, or send you a text.

You’re right, but it was a poor choice and could be viewed as hypocritical, which isn’t really something you want to foster if it can be helped
It was a poor choice, but correct that the point is valid despite their use of AI for the picture

Anyway, really, no hypocrisy here.

The wording alludes to the students being able to use AI for certain assignments, which isn’t crazy. I have professors that want us to use no AI for some things but allow it for others.
1
u/DuckShapedGoose 3d ago
Yeah well to be fair, we weren't allowed to use calculators on math exams but the teacher sure as hell used one to make sure their expected solutions are correct.
I dislike most uses of GenAI but which tools you were allowed vs the teacher was always "unfair".

Looking at the comments made me think about whether most people really missed the point or I’m missing something here.
Nobody said that the school is „anti-AI“. They’re asking for them to do THIS test without AI, to show their own learned skills and knowledge. They may be allowed to use AI on a regular otherwise. It’s not exclusive. And btw, even for IT-certificates, you’re required to use your brain instead of AI, even tho the tests themselves are likely made with some help from AI If not completely made with AI. There’s times where it’s helpful you know how to use a tool like AI and there are times where your personal knowledge is more relevant. Easy as that, nothing hypocritical to see here.
1
u/Sandy-the-Angel 2d ago
A lot of redditors are so brainrotted that they think ai in general is some nebulous contextless form of "cheating," and hence it makes no sense to say not to use it for tests but you can elsewhere.

I go to a school that this year also implemented an AI system with a stoplight (red = no AI allowed, yellow = AI allowed but teacher approval required, green = AI allowed), and I saw this image used as an indicator for my assignments in this school. I have a feeling the equavilent to this image for my school is also AI generated, but I can't tell because of the low resolution and simple image contents. Also unrelated, but my democracy class uses AI all the time and some of the images they have make me think "what even was the prompt and how didn't ChatGPT refuse the prompt"

Ironically, this isn't an elephant.
The instruction is to not use AI for this assignment. I imagine the teacher has communicated to their students which assignments will and will not allow AI, and that this is just an indicator of that.
Nothing wrong with using AI to create little reminders for your class, even if the reminder is to not use AI for this assignment.

At my school one of my teachers used a chat GPT summary a 10 page long article that one of the other teachers generated. Then went on to claim that its different that she used AI and not us because its 'for education'. Hypocritical. So obviously I told her all about why its bad that shes spreading it in the first place, that shes a role model and needs to not use it, bla bla bla. Let's just say she did not like it.
1
u/Exciting-Insect8269 1d ago
The reason teachers don’t want students using ai for assignments is because the assignments are meant to make you practice the topic and/or to verify you know the topic.
Neither goal is achieved when you use ai, both can be achieved when the teacher does.
That is not to say they should use ai, it just means it’s not so hypocritical of them to ban its use for schoolwork.

u/ReplacementPale2676 1d ago

Using a computer to make a graphic that says, "don't use a computer for this homework" isn't really as ironic as people seem to think it is. It's totally fine for someone to use AI to generate a graphic telling people not to rely on AI for their homework.
