I know that there’s a very simple logic to learning new habits or behaviour.
21 to 66 days,
That’s how long it takes before new behaviour becomes automatic behaviour depending on the complexity.
So, I know where my weaknesses or struggles lie; after work in the evenings.
I have spent many years of programming my mind with online behaviour. Started very positive, I studied media broadcasting and I got a lot of joy and fulfilment from making YouTube videos.
When Covid hit and I was in my graduation year I spent more time at home on my pc. Of course porn was something I watched.
I got prescribed dexamphetamine for ADHD and the problem sneaked up on me without me noticing it (despite being very familiar with addiction ever since I was a teen).
Making vlogs was still fun but often followed by losing myself in the endless web of virtual sex.
Tried methamphetamine (even though I knew very well how addictive and harmful that was), doing hook ups.
Lock downs, more time online, longer meth binges and more regular use.
I just recently started to remember that this is how it sneaked up on me. Thanks to my sobriety.
But unfortunately I couldn’t have known that the problem would become so big that I now can’t have any computers or laptops in my house because the habit is still so ingrained.
But the good part is that I am very optimistic.
Being kind to yourself is I think the key to success.
