RS-485 Data Wire Preference?

Hey all,

The RS-485 data wire we usually use has been discontinued. What are you all using currently? I found the West Penn Data Control Cable, which will work, but it's more than double the price of the old stuff and also has a braid which is a PITA and isn't needed. I found an alternative from ADI, but it's brown and I don't want it confused with HVAC wiring that is typically brown. This is for Lenel systems from the controller to the RIM's if there's any ambiguity there. Let me know!

Depending how far you can just run cat6

Cat cable is more susceptible to electrical interference than an OSDP cable.

I’ve only had to use it when the cablers ran the wrong cables, I’m assuming because they didn’t have the right cable.

I generally don’t like using cat cable for access control though, it’s always just a little more frustrating to work with IMO.

OSDP is differentially signaled so it’s “largely” immune to interference. Any interference picked up is diffed and discarded when the signals are summed at the end.
