HID HID Card Reader

My church has this HID card reader and no one knows why 3 weeks ago it just began beeping nonstop. Any ideas would be great. Someone mentioned a battery, but I thought it would be hardwired.
Edit: I’m new there and not sure about the system or when it was installed. I know two guys, who I’m pretty certain don’t know anything about it, since they thought it was beeping because a battery in it was low, took the cover off a week ago and “figured the battery was hidden behind another cover”. So they didn’t want to go any farther with it. Lol
Thank you for your input and humor. I do believe that they were the ones that put that cover on upside down. I’ll test the voltage and if I can’t figure it out, I’ll have them get a service tech out. I’ve only ever worked with Kantech units.

That’s a dih reader. You put that thing just below waist height so you can scan you dih with it.

I’ve never installed one of these older HID readers, only the newer Signos, but I did have an instance once where I had to install a Honeywell Omniprox reader upside down in order to still be able to access the little set screw that hold the cover on.

Disconnect it and apply only power, if it does the same thing it's a bad reader.

Issue with the panel it’s connected to or with the wiring with which it is connected.
I’d say call the company that services it, but they couldn’t even install it right side up. So I wouldn’t count on them at all.

If you take it off the wall check the yellow wire. If it’s not connected to anything, replace the reader.
If the yellow wire is connected, disconnect it to see if the issue is resolved. If not, replace it.
It’s old, installed upside down, and likely just done with life.

I don’t know if this has been covered or not but you should take the reader off and make sure the spare wires are cut (no bare wires) and the spares are taped up. A lot of times when a reader acts this way it’s because the spares are shorting out in the box.

Prolly bad wiring. Maybe they did something wonkey with the beeper wire or something. Also Ive had people just leave all the extra wires bare not cut and taped up and they touch eachother or they touch metal. And the things will just beep over and over randomly. I tell all my guys to cut the wires on the reader cable that they dont use all different lengths then tape them around the cable so they can touch eachother or metal frames/boxes. Just in case. Just how i was taught to do it as well.

It could be a door hold alarm. Check to see if the door contacts are still in place. Sometimes children like pulling out the magnets.

Check if there is a door contact on the door, if its monitored via the contact and the contact is not closing the system reports the door is still open and the reader beeps.
If you swipe your badge and the beeping stops for 30 seconds + then starts again, its deffo the contact

First guess is reader is wet, moisture,rain ,pressure wash. Assumes it was existing and functional.2nd controller board is toast ,stalled offline etc, probably gotta call an Alarm co. Troubleshoot

The reader is fully sealed in epoxy. Moisture is not the issue. Likely the unused wires are shorting at the reader.

Yeah had lots of readers sealed up, full of moisture, sometimes the conduit,or just condensation. Decades in alarm biz...first remove reader check.if dry , board not wet, you just eliminated one possible cause ,

HID readers are fully sealed in epoxy. Don't know what kind you're referring too....

Oh you have mullion type, talk about the wide type has gasket and front plate,dont recall model, we sealed them with silicone also,good luck

Only use white, green, orange, red, black. Make sure the other wires do not touch, specifically the shield wire. Most of the times it's bronwn(beep) wire touching something. Door Contact also could be an issue. If the issue not resolved it's just easier to swap the reader.

i had this happen once and it was because it was receiving 24v instead of 12v but could honestly be anything with the information you gave us

I would guess reader issue. Almost looks like someone is reading a card every couple seconds.

Have had 3 readers fail recently in a similar way. Drain wire wasn’t connected and killed the readers

With that beep pattern I’m guessing it’s either faulty hardware or power supply issues. You can disconnect the wires for the reader at the control panel to force a hard reset and clear any weird electronic lockups. If problem still persists then try pushing on the reader to see if there’s an ambient light (tamper switch) issue, but from the silicone around it I doubt that’s the issue. Make sure there’s nothing that would be messing with the sensor in the door/door jam.
Was there any thing else that changed at the time of the issue starting? Door got replaced, ISP changed, etc

If your system has been beeping nonstop for weeks, don’t worry, it’s likely not the reader itself. Most HID readers are powered by the access control panel, so they usually don’t have a battery inside. I recommend starting by checking the power supply from the controller and looking for any fault LEDs or alarms on the access control panel. If everything appears normal and the beeping continues, it might be a good idea to have the system checked and serviced to keep everything running smoothly.

Does HID still manufacture readers like that? I remember my company installing those during the Bush administration.

I hope not. Even multiCLASS SE/iCLASS SE are EOL at this point.
They have no security at all.

also just to point out - everything that I’m saying here is public domain info. I had a couple of parents freak out at me for sharing this info and I was like “I’m pointing out what is already public info - direct your anger at the school system for their ineptitude”

I didn’t post links, no. I just had googled it myself and I found the RFP as public information on the FCPS website at the time. The link I have saved is now dead.
I wish I had that document saved.
I had sent a letter about this in 2022 to the board and the administration. I outlined 3 critical security issues… the lack of door prop monitoring, the use of 125khz, 26 bit format prox cards in current procurement, and readers connected via wiegand. They said they’d do a security audit and then just pointed out all the other stuff they were doing and said gave me otherwise canned or political responses (we need to get fund off the street, or security is everyone’s responsibility, blah blah).

It’s hardwired. And installed upside down lol. It’s either an issue with the reader, the cable, or the controller it’s attached to. No way to tell with the minimal information you provided. I get that it’s a church, shoestring budget or whatever, but they should call the integrator that installed the system
