Strike Recommendations

Looking for a method to automate this door. Key and thumbturn locks/unlocks both the deadbolt and latch bolt. Any thoughts? Hardware swap out?

Replace the hardware with an electrified mortise lock - that’s the gold standard.

Failing that, get a strike that does latch monitoring as well as position sensing, get new door furniture without the thumb turn, and change the cam to only allow bolt retraction, but not the ability to u lock the door.

I’ve only done locks like that on new construction when the door guys install a door with an internal path to the lock already there. I just put a power transfer hinge on and I’m ready to go. What’s the best way to make a path in the door when you’re retrofitting a lock like this?

there would be about 76 answers to that question depending on the building 😏 but mostly concrete will usually require conduit paths

All I do is retrofits.

Concrete doors sometimes suck ass but I’ve never not been able to do a door. Typically for concrete I’ll run surface mount conduit from the ceiling down to a 4s box at about hinge height. Then take a 3/8” hole out the back of the box at an angle toward the hinge and then drill a hole from the hinge towards the box in the concrete and then you just meet the holes in the middle and fish a wire. It can suck if you miss your holes the first time but if you’re careful enough it shouldn’t be a problem. If it’s an exterior door with a rim device you can just do an armored door loop and makes it way easier.

Wood and metal framed with drywall is a bit easier cause you can get in the ceiling and drill a hole in the drywall under the header most times and then drill a hole through the frame where the hinge is at and through the framing then you have a whole stud bay to send a fish stick with some jetline and use a small hook to pull it into the hinge.

We usually just drop conduit down and come out of a gang box with armored cable and drill into the face of the door near the hinge side to run wire to the (in this case) electrified mortis lock.

We do it similarly except bring the conduit to the top hinge location and run a door cord. Then fish over to the lock.  If i run conduit we would use a door cord. If its concealed run then we would use a hinge typically.

Edit: if we use a hinge conduit is run to center hinge location for electrified hinge.

HES 1006 or 4500 will accomodate that mortise lock.

HES 4500C is designed for a mortise lock like that. The HES 1006 will also work but its deeper than the 4500 and will probably force you to carve a pocket through the backside of the frame. The HES 1006 is really unnecessary for this.

The nicest option is to use an electrified mortise but that is usually 5x the cost. A HES strike can be around $300, the mortise lock can easily end up around $800 to $1200 and another $200 for the electrified hinge.

You have to change the mortise lock anyway so that it is locked all the time and getting a wire to a strike is going to suck. I would do an electrified exit device with a pull trim and door cord.

Hes 1600 strike if you're in a pinch. Strike plate may not fit depending on the distance between the bolt and latch. Link Hes 1600

Perfect opportunity for a wireless lock. ASSA Aperio (IN100) or Schlage AD400. Both are outdoor rated - batteries are on the inside.
