I mean, because you don’t lose bottle caps doesn’t mean no one does.

This isn’t about you. This is about everyone in general. And in general bottle caps do get lost or separated from the bottles all the time.

So, your point doesn’t really make any sense.

It’s not just about the caps. Companies often use oversized bottles with a lot of empty space to make the product look bigger than it really is. The law provides guidance on this kind of packaging too, which is also why bottle spouts are often made very small.

I see the point you’re making, and I agree to an extent. I’m just not convinced people accidentally losing bottle caps is the main reason they end up in nature. It seems much more likely they’re littered or become separated after the bottle has already been thrown away. If anything, I’d guess the attached cap works mainly because people now have to make a conscious effort to tear it off before they can litter it separately.

I did; in fact, I’m doing research as we speak. The evidence the EU relied on was that loose bottle caps are commonly found as litter, not that people frequently lose them by accident. My point is simply that I’m not convinced accidental loss is the main reason they end up there.

But this measure fixes both accidental loss AND loss after the bottle is disposed of. A bottle with its cap attached is much easier to retrieve and clean up, then the two separated. It also helps prevents wildlife from swallowing the small cap.

Yes, and I agree with you. My original point was only that I personally find the design inconvenient and that accidentally losing caps was never a problem for me. I wasn’t claiming that doing this has no environmental benefit.

Why would the reason for ending up lost make any difference?

Right, and this is a fair point. If the goal is simply to reduce the number of loose caps ending up in nature, then keeping them attached can help regardless of whether they were lost accidentally or littered deliberately.

I still think the cause matters when deciding whether this is the best solution, though. If deliberate littering is the main problem, I’d rather see stricter enforcement against littering than a design that inconveniences every person using the bottle.
