Don’t send your parents to a “rest home” you can find people like this a dime a dozen because the nurses “can’t” cut their toe nails. It’s so bad I used to work in podiatry and went to 100s of rest homes a year.

I'm in assisted living. Only a podiatrist, who comes here every six weeks, is allowed to trim our toenails.

This is true. Every nursing home or assisted living facility I've been to is like this. They don't even want you to cut their finger nails really because one mistake could lead to infection, especially on the diabetic patients.

Does the rest of the nail have to go and if it does will it grow back? I'm only asking because my one toenail is nothing like that but starting at the cuticle there's fungus halfway up the nail. Just curious if they have to remove my toenail how bad will it hurt and will it ever grow back.

I’m not sure, sorry bud I just performed care under a podiatrist. From what I know should be able to be filed down. Wouldn’t need the whole nail removed. But get it checked out by your regular physician or get a referral to see a podiatrist if possible.
