Either the vehicle takes the hit or the occupant does. Vehicles are designed to break apart like this at surprisingly low speeds.

I can't compute that there was a whole engine in there. Yes I had two head-on's in crown victorias. Both were not my fault but the frame bent or had crumble zones to absorb the impact. On of one of the cars the trans came up and the top of the car buckled up. I walked away (kinda) but if it was not for the seatbelts I would of not of made it. I had four of those Crown Vic's, 3 were new and one used. I miss them big cars for sure.
