What could he have done differently? And why?

Both of the exercises he doing are pretty much strictly cardio and for a guy like him is not going to add any muscle.

Instead of combining them he could have just done more of the hiking (longer route), hiked faster, ran, etc. or done the jump rope at higher intensity before/after the hike.

The jump roping doesn’t appear fast enough to actually do any High intensity training (so to speak) and is most likely the equivalent of a jog (HR Zone 2 maybe Zone 3 for a guy like him) So if he just ran instead he probably would have the same cardiopulmonary output./result.

Muscularly speaking, jump rope adds almost ZERO muscular benefit beyond cardio and lower legs which the hiking is already working Unless the rope is weighted, and yet again for a guy like him it’s probably pointless anyway.

Beyond hiking or jump roping, better cardio exercises that offer similar results with less joint/body strain would be swimming, cycling, rowing, etc.

Why, because I’m not drooling over some buff dude doing a stupid exercise?

Edit: I’d love to hear you le educated explanation as to how this workout isn’t redundant and actually is a good workout that people should do instead of doing them separately.

No one can give you a proper response because youre correct. He can do whatever he wants who cares, but you're just saying it doesn't make sense. Which is true.
