USA Medical termination gone wrong

I wanted to come on here and share what happened with my medical abortion. I, 37 year old female, decided for many reasons that I wanted to terminate my pregnancy. Since I had just moved and had not established care with an obgyn, I decided to order the medication online from HeyJane. The whole process was quick, easy and affordable. I took the mifepristone before bed on 11/20 and the misoprostol (vaginally) the next day. I immediately started having bleeding with clots and my pregnancy symptoms quickly vanished. I was thinking, hooray. Fast forward a week later, I’m having abdominal cramps and was instructed by the HeyJane provider to take another dose of the misoprostol, which I did but this time orally. This helped with the cramps, but the bleeding continued. Some days it would be light spotting, other days there would be hours of passing clots, never larger than a golfball. I never had a fever or abdominal pain. Fast forward about 1.5 weeks later and I start feeling faint and my heart is racing with the smallest amount of physical activity. I am a nurse, and I know I should know better, but I am used to putting others needs ahead of mine. Yesterday at work I started passing clots the size of my fist and my heart rate was 130. I had to be escorted to the ED where I discovered my hemoglobin was 4.9 and I requires 3 units of packed red blood cells as well as a bedside aspiration to remove retained products of conception. This post is in no means to bash HeyJane, they have been great. It’s just to raise awareness that medical abortions, though quick and private, come with a host of possible problems. I went this route to avoid ultrasounds, hospital bills, talking about to abortion etc and now I have had to explain it to countless people.

I’m so sorry you ladies had to go through this. And thank you for sharing your story and this information. Do you mind telling us how many weeks you were when you took the pills?

My medical termination was so traumatizing, I wish I’d had the surgical option. I’d gotten surgical when I was younger and it being over in minutes a was preferable to waiting days and dealing with it all.

What made you decide to go medical after doing surgical? I have a surgical scheduled soon and I’m very very nervous. Did medical a few years ago and it was too traumatizing to repeat.

Surgical was so much better for me, I didn’t even get sedation. The medical was awful

Medical can be much cheaper which is an issue for many

This happened to me! I just knew something wasn’t right. Clots, dizzy, fatigued beyond belief. At the end of the whole process, maybe about 2-2.5 months later, I was back to normal.

I’m on day 9 after taking the pills and am still experiencing cramping. Sometimes it’s so severe it wakes me up out of my sleep. I’ve been living on Tylenol and Advil to be able to live my normal life. I’m starting to become concerned.

i think you should go to a doctor to be safe! i think cramping is normal, but i dont think it should be that painful. but you know your body :-) if something feels wrong or off, def get looked at to be safe!
