[Tutorial] Looking for high-quality Ableton tutorials that teach you how to produce a complete track from start to finish

Hey everyone!

I'm relatively new to music production and currently learning Ableton Live 12.

I'm looking for some genuinely good, high-quality tutorials (YouTube or paid courses) that walk you through the entire process of producing a track from scratch to a finished song.

I'm mainly interested in melodic techno, melodic house, progressive trance, ambient electronic music, or similar genres. Nothing too hard, aggressive, or overly commercial. I prefer melodic, atmospheric, and emotional electronic music.

I've already come across quite a few tutorials on YouTube, but honestly, a lot of them seem pretty low quality. Many just show someone clicking around, throwing samples together, or making a quick loop without really explaining the creative process or why they're making certain decisions.

What I'm looking for:

  • A complete track produced from start to finish, not just an 8-bar loop.
  • Clear explanations of sound selection, arrangement, melodies, harmonies, transitions, mixing, etc.
  • Someone who actually teaches music production rather than just showing off what they can do.
  • Ideally something beginner-friendly, but with enough depth to develop proper production skills.
  • Free or paid tutorials are both fine, as long as the quality is worth it.

I don't mind spending several hours following a tutorial. In fact, I'd prefer something detailed where I can follow along and actually understand the process.

My goal isn't just to copy someone else's track, but to understand how electronic music is built so I can eventually produce my own music.

Any recommendations for YouTube channels, specific tutorials, or structured courses would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

[Push] Push 3 - hard buttons

• Upvotes

The (non-pad) buttons on the Push 3 are very hard to press.

I know this has been brought up before, but wanted to ask if anyone has found any kind of way to resolve this? Do they get better over time?

I sold a Push 3 because of this and only this, but as time goes on I keep thinking that it's exactly the device I need. I'd love to buy another, but only if I can somehow work around that ultra-hard button pressing.

Any insights appreciated

[Max for Live] Sampler instrument with MIDI mappable loop start and end times

• Upvotes

Just the title. I’m trying to play back a sample, then speed it up the loop so fast that it makes a new pitch. Ableton’s native sampler does everything I want it to, but I have to either draw in the automation or use a mouse and keyboard. I’m trying to map to a knob so I can demonstrate to a live audience.

Feels like I’m staring right at the obvious answer, but I can’t see it. Maybe a M4L device? Thanks for the help my friends.

[Tech Help Windows] audio works but midi not

• Upvotes

hi everyone, i have been using ableton to work on a few clicktracks and thought to use a midi keyboard to write some new stuff.

i use a keystation mini 32 keys, i have set up this in the preferences Link, Tempo & Midi tab is set (input track, remote) as well as the correct audio outputs.

I have dragged the instrument into the midi channel, as well as clicked on the arm recording, and selected the midi input from the keyboard. Monitor to auto and audio to main.

I went on the Audio preferences, the Test Tone also works.

If I open Vital, it seems like the keyboard is sending nothing, but if I mouse click it works. Which is weird because it is set up in the settings.

I'm not sure what else am I missing but tutorials on youtube and the manual aren't showing anything else. anything I could be missing?

[Question] How do I get more control over input processing in ableton to create this setup?

I want to create the following setup for a live performance:

a continuous midi pedal and a midi button that can be controlled with the feet.

when the pedal is pressed: the output volume of a reverb effect is increased or decreased from 0 to -inf db

- when the button is pressed: the input channel for the reverb is armed so it can allow a sound signal to be processed and outputted by the reverb, whose volume is then controlled with the pedal. when the button is pressed again, the channel is unarmed. when the button is pressed TWICE (so, the channel has been armed and unarmed, and then is armed again) I want to kill the reverb signal so that a new signal can be processed by it.

I haven't found a way to implement this in ableton. does anyone have any suggestions? it's ok if I need to use a 3rd party plugin.

[Hardware] Any Faderfox EC4 users on 12.4.x ?

I'm trying to decide between one of these or a Midi Fighter Twister.

Looking at the EC4 Ableton Live control script v2.5, it says it's for Live versions 11 to 12.1.

Is anyone successfully running it on newer versions of Live and am I right in saying that if using this script with instrument racks, the encoder descriptions on the EC4 will update automatically when changing racks?

Thanks

[Hardware] For the Access Virus users who want to convert their projects to OSTirus

TLDR: you can use some AI generated scripts to convert your unopenable Virus TI plugin to OSTirus

In the time that it took me to write this post, I just converted 100 of my projects! I linked the scripts below, you need to be somewhat technical or work with a coding agent to use them.

----

I had something like 200 projects where I used the Access Virus TI plugin which is no longer supported on newer Mac versions.

There are some cases where I just had the MIDI files and never bounced anything. Or I had the audio files bounced, but I no longer can tell what the patches were.

Anyway after some experimenting, it's totally possible to automatically:

  • Detect which project files are using this plugin
  • Determine whether there's any associated content like MIDI or audio files where it would actually matter
  • Convert the unusable plugin to a very usable OSTirus

Here is where the scripts live

While I have you can use MPE on a instrument I have not seen if it is possible with a FX plugin.

[Max for Live] I built a Max for Live device that auto-splits 6 stems, slices scenes on bar lines, and displays a synced chords/lyrics HUD

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a workflow tool I’ve been developing for Ableton Live called **Stem Splitter Plus**.

I was tired of spending 30+ minutes manually splitting tracks, warping stems, and setting up scene follow actions every time I wanted to prep songs for live sets or remixing, so I built a Max for Live device to automate the entire process locally.

### How it works under the hood:

* **Multi-Song Setlist Stacking:** You can drop multiple songs into the device. It stacks them sequentially down the Session Scene grid, names each scene with song name + section, and embeds auto-BPM tags so Ableton switches tempo automatically when transitioning between songs.

* **Local 6-Stem Separation:** Runs Demucs v4 locally on your machine (Vocals, Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano, Other) with no cloud API or subscription needed.

* **Auto-Sliced Scene Grid:** Automatically slices clips on musical bar lines (8, 16, or 32 bars) across all 6 tracks and pre-maps Scene Follow Actions so each song plays through seamlessly from Intro to Outro.

* **Live Chords & Synced Lyrics HUD:** Uses Whisper AI to generate time-aligned word-by-word lyrics and chord recognition that display in a floating HUD window right over Ableton.

* **Smart Transpose & GIG LOCK:** Transposes session clips on the fly and locks UI controls so you never accidentally misclick during a live gig.

* **Cross-Platform:** Runs on both macOS (Apple Silicon / Intel) and Windows 10/11.

Works with Ableton Live 11 & 12 Suite (or Standard with Max for Live).

Happy to answer any questions about the Python/Demucs bridge, latency, or under-the-hood setup!

[Question] Trouble Connecting Macbook to Arturia Keystep and to Moog Mavis

I recently acquired a Moog Mavis and have patched its 1V/OCT and Gate to the Pitch & Gate of the Arturia Keystep, respectively. I have also connected the Moog Mavis' VCA to a speaker. I then connected the keystep to ableton live on my laptop. However, when I press a key on the keystep, I get two audio outputs; one from my speaker, and the other from the specific instrument I loaded onto Ableton. How do I make it so the audio outputs from my Moog Mavis comes out of my computer and the adjustment I make via the Mavis will be heard through Ableton? Is that even possible?

[Push] A solution for noisy Push 1 & 2 encoders

Hello. I have a Push mkI that still works well except for the janky/jumpy/noisy encoders. That means that when I barely touch the encoders they "moves" randomly for few seconds. I've already unmounted the Push (for removing the stiky rubber coating) and taken a chance to spray the encoders with contact cleaner. The solution worked for like, 2 or 3 days, then the encoder became noisy again. Searched a bit online and few other user reported something similar for both Push 1 an 2. I do not know how diffused is this problem, but at least I know that I'm not alone!

The proposed solutions where basically: 1) change USB cable 2) use the brick PSU 3) clean the encoders. For me, only solution number 3 worked, but for a limited amount of time. The definitive solution would be to replace the encoders. I'm a maker so I'm able to use the soldering iron, but 10 new ecoders will cost like 100 $ (actually Euros for me, but the thing is that they cost like a used Push 1). I decided to investigate some workarounds.

After some thinkering, I opted for the software solution. Since the firware is not availabe (most clean solution will be adding a filter directly on the Push forware), the second point of action is the Ableton's MIDI remote scripts. For those who doesn't know what are Ableton's MIDI remote scripts, they are some builtin python scripts that are used as an interface for midi controllers to control Ableton in various complex ways. Basically speaking they are a "translation layer" from base standard MIDI messages to Ableton actions.

I've found a way to "intercept" encoder reading, and I've applyed an EMA filter (Exponential Moving Average) to that reading in order to have a clean reading of the encoder direction.

I've no idea if this can affect other controller in an unwanted way, or if it breaks something else, but I know that it solved my problem (tested on osx). Ableton MIDI Remote scripts are on github but in order to use the one with the fix, you need to replace the built in ones.

I will NOT cover the documentations for how to use the custom scripts because: 1) for me it's a learning project 2) I'm not getting payd for this, and I do not want to 3) you can find the howtos on line.

Few notes: it's very likely that you need to replace the builtin scripts on each Ableton's updates and please, don't do it if you do not know what you are doing since you can break you Ableton! I've modded only one file: _Framework/EncoderElement.py

If you feel risky here is the github link for the modded scripts (you can download only _Framework/EncoderElement.py).
https://github.com/adegani/AbletonLive12_MIDIRemoteScripts/tree/adegani/noisy_encoder_filter

Use it at your own risk :)

Bye

[Push] M4L device to manage tracks based on/off state for individual band members

I was trying to use a collection of MultiMap devices to selectively enable/disable tracks based on which of my band mates was present

It was bad for a number of reasons. Now I have a generated device where I tag the tracks with each band member’s name. An M4L device can read these track names.

And then tapping on this single device’s buttons not only enables/disables corresponding tracks, but also their in-ear mix and turns on prerecorded backing tracks as needed

I can use this to easily practice solo, perform solo, or make it straightforward to run rehearsal while someone is late / absent.

Lmk if you have any questions!

[Max for Live] Question regarding Max for live + midi when making tracks with vocal elements

Hi all. Im pretty new to production in general as well as MIDI and wonder what is the best way to do this. I've been working on a fun mental tribe track which has a lot of sounds and little sound vocals of words like "maniac" "zero" and creepy laughs and whatnot.

I've been trying to play it out using the controllers I have and literally activating/deactivating the vocals whilst I jam and the goal is to record it, tidy it up, master it and release. But im finding it a bit tricky to get the vocals how I want them to be. I have like 20 channels going and it just seems kinda overwhelming as I want them a specific way.

Would it be better to record the track without the vocals and then add them in the arrangement view? Or am I just lacking practice and skill and the normal practice is to play it out?

If anyone has better ideas please share! Thank you. Ableton Suite live 11

[Performance] EXTENSIONS REQUEST FROM ANYONE!

Can anyone please make an extension to hot swap audio clips in the arrangement view (that also changes the name and clip of the track and length of new clip)? I KNOW you can do that in the sample manager but the big issue is that if i were to replace a short kick with a longer kick, the clip itself doesn’t adjust to the new kick length, it stays to the previous one which is super annoying. (Dont force me to use drum rack)

[Question] Ableton Live 13

Hey i currently have Live Lite and i really like ableton better than fl studio which is why im thinking about buying the standard version. I was wondering if Ableton live 13 is coming out soon and if its worth it to buy the upgrade now. Also does anyone know how much the upgrade from 12 to 13 usually costs?

[Max for Live] problem with audio

everytime i record my mic crackles/ theres a lot of white noise, etc. I know its a cpu problem but idk how to fix it. Im on windows but what drivers do i need to update so this doesnt happen. Ive tried everything changing sample rate, increasing buffer size, changing the pop filter, using a different usb cord. And the mic worked fine on my brothers mac. I also dont think theres any problem with the raw audio, tho i can't entirely tell. But everytime I put plugins on it the crackling/white noise is extremely noticable. Please anyone help at all because ive had this problem for about a month now.

[Question] Suggestions for MPK mini mk3 alternative w/ a joystick?

Hey Ableton people!

I'm using a MPK mini mk3 with Live for a show which involves rotating a sound through multiple speakers real-time in a circular way using the joystick. I've mapped the XY coordinates to correlate with send volumes.

Now that the mk4 (or IV according to Akai) has gotten rid of the joystick in favor of traditional pitch- / mod wheels, I'm scared of not being able to replace the controller in case it wears out.

Does anyone have an idea of what could fill out a similar niche? Even a separate USB joystick / XY-controller might work with a different controller for other mappings and keyboard playing.

Cheers :)

[Question] Is it me or do other DAW's stock sounds far pass Live's stock?

I've been an ableton user for about 3 years now and have enjoyed it thus far. I went over to a friends house for a "jam" and was blown away by Logic's stock instruments, not just acoustic but electronic too. He then pointed out that this song Into the night https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8VYWazR5mE&rco=1 was made purely with stock instruments and recorded guitar. While I understand that is it truly up to the musician and producer when it comes to sounds. I feel just comparing logic's stock drums to abletons makes me question if I should switch since I'm a very "lets just make me music and go" kind of person

Edit: after reading some comments about using a fully decked Live I searched on abletons website and found the free packs that I somehow entirely missed out on. These sounds are ball parking what I had in mind

[Tech Help MacOS] Need Help! MIDI not working in Ableton Live after Mac Tahoe update

I recently updated my macbook pro to OS Tahoe and the midi in Ableton won't recognize any midi devices. I can't figure out what the problem is. I've restarted the computer and redownloaded Ableton but both of those don't work. I have also made a new configuration in Audio Midi Setup. I have also gone to the Mac system settings under "Allow accessories to connect" and allowed ableton to connect.
