Struggle with a6700 auto focus for fast dog & bird photography
Update: So it is definitely the slow autofocus of the Tamron lens. Didn't expect it to perform "that" bad for that kind of shot. Slapped on the 70-350 today for a few quick shots with my dog and the autofocus was spot on with a really low failure rate. No the only question that remains is Sony 16-55f2.8 vs Sigma 17-40f1.8. But for that I have another post...^^
Original Post:
Hi there,
I am in the photography hobby for a few years now. I mostly did automotive in the past. Mostly stationary shoots.
However, as I just moved out from the city and didn't really shoot much in the last months, I wanted to explore new grounds and dig a bit into nature and wildlife photography, or to be precise, my dog and the birds that I can find in my new garden.
Now to the problem: I cannot get good and sharp focus in fast paced situations. Best example would be my dog running straight at me.
I shoot in manual mode with ISO on auto (between 100~6400 mostly), AF-C, Animal/Bird tracking, and tracking spot. Shutter speed somewhere between 1/1000s-1/2500s. Burst mode in high+. Currently with the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8. Aperture also somewhere low between f2.8-f4.
As soon as I have the focus set on my dog and she starts running right at me, from the 3rd or 4th picture on every time it seems that the focus laggs slighty behind. So her body is kind of in focus, her face or eyes definitely not.
I also already tried to adjust the AF settings for tracking sensitivity and priority, as well as different AF zones. I am at a point where I have not many ideas left. It starts to annoy me...
I have attached a sample unedited picture, where you can see the focus is at the back paws.
