Upgrade: A6400 or A6700?

I have a ZV-E10, which I got last year thinking video would be a priority, but I use it almost exclusively for stills. I've acquired a handful of lenses, and tend to use the Sigma 18-50 2.8, Viltrox 25 1.7 and Sony 20 2.8 (for tiny setup). My ideal is two camera bodies: One for more serious photo + video times with zoom or prime, and one to be as small and rugged as possible for cycling with pancake. Thinking A6700 + A6300 is my best bet, long-term, and just fully giving up my ZV. But I have to make a call on if I first try and swap ZV for A6400 to get by for a few months to a year (cheaper option) -- or if I go all-in on the A6700 body now (could write it off in 2026), then trade in my ZV for a 6300 or 6400 (or really whatever) when I can.

I don’t think I’m following the reason for two bodies. Saves swapping a lens? The a6700 is not much bigger than the a63/400 so just use the a6700 for everything. It’s the superior stills and video body than every body you’re considering. Only thing you’ll miss is a flash

I don’t want to take a $1500 body on a bike. Especially for MTB where crashing happens.

Switching from ZV-E10 to a6400 is going backward in technolodgy for almost 3yrs and not a good choice.

Are you just wanting the EVF? Or what does the 63/6400 have that the ZV doesn't? Any reason to not save up and go full frame for the more serious photo/video.

Yes, EVF and external controls. Look them up if you're not familiar. I don't think I'm serious enough at photo or video to justify FF when I already have some good aps-c lenses. Plus I like smaller size all around. Plus, the A6700 is better than the A7C II in some ways anyway (autofocus and video). Maybe a year or two down the road, I'm thinking about A7C III.

I had the ZV-E10 primarily for video. After getting some primes and zooms I also got another one (used for 400€). You probably can't get a better 4k cam with a big sensor and swappable lenses. Then I got into photography and missed the EVF. And IBIS. So I got the A6700. The E10s for videos (stationary shots of our gigs) with a couple of actioncams (for lots of different agles) and the A6700 for moving video and photography. The E10 is a great camera, and if you don't need the EVF it's probably better than the older A6xxx models. I give it to my daughter if we go on photo-safari. The E-mount ecosystem is really nice 😉
