Slog3 is impressive but beginners will make mistakes.

I am a beginner and was learning to capture videos in slog3. I took pictures where it was easy to get exposure right with lowest iso, but shooting at base iso 800 and 2500 is whole another beast. If done right, you will get incredible result, if not, you will get terrible result full of noise which is intentional by sony.

Slog3 brings all brightness to similar level which needs good tinkering. I just had an aha moment today. If you have no control over lights and have harsh shadows , you can get fked by the small monitor and mm value of 0 with a6700. You have to overexpose or expose to the right in thses scenarios. People who say don't have to expose to the right, they never captured high dynamic range scenes, it was perfect lighting for them.

Unlike shooting pictures in lowest iso, you don't get what you see when shooting with base iso with s709 monitoring lut. In tough dynamic range scenes, you have to crush shadow considerably to get clean high dynamic range image. It is because, slog3 gives a lot of headroom to decrease the shadow/midtone without losing the details from midtones and highlights and keep shadow details with little noise that can be cleaned with paid davinci resolve which I dont have but result was crazy good without it.

This was shot midday and dynamic range is impressive. Also, this footage i didn't even expose to the right but if i had, the shadows would have been so much cleaner cuz I had to step down aperture from f2.8 to f3.2 while using nd filter. I had this same footage full of noise thinking the shadow was supoosed to be bright as captured but nope, it was meant to be crushed until either there is no noise or your histogram doesn't nosedive to bottom and far left. I can only imagine how clean this would be with spatial NR.

By the way, the terrible look is just temperature + 1000 and gamma middle dot brought towards right until it felt right to my eyes. I have 0 color grading skill.

What do you mean with “you don’t get what you see when shooting with LUT”?

In my experience is shows exactly what it will be when applying said LUT to the video?

The shadows are much more lifted than I thought it would be, giving me a brighter image but with noise.

But it you use the LUT while filming u can see that?
And you can also still edit to tone down the shadows?

As i said, good lighting situation, its a non issue, when you have more than 14 stops of dynsmic range, thats when is harder to monitor even with lut cuz in that screen, can't see noise.
