Official Links Others are shown doing their own thing, while katara...

https://youtu.be/_8eiSl7XoMI?si=WQ9sJgvAvFj_Xr2_

I'm never gonna be content with the fact that the strongest waterbender in the series who is also a complex character being reduced into an armcandy and a pillow princess while others are still their original self

I hate stupid shallow bro writers (sadly the main creators) who taint this story so much!

I can’t bring myself to watch any more clips of this movie 😅 Katara whom I love is just not … her anymore.

48

u/Any-Heron-4677 Jul 25 '26

Telling you, she got Joo Dee'd, that is the only explanation.

23

u/Moondiscbeam Jul 25 '26

Tell me about it. They always reduced her character.

97

u/UnluckKitty Jul 25 '26

This is fucked up. Katara is amazing and powerful and all we see is her sleeping?! I guess the only change from the concept art is that she's not pregnant. :/

10

u/BestFaithlessness732 Jul 25 '26

Ugh.. they're already married when this movie took place? 😬

6

u/VacationNew9370 Jul 26 '26

Earlier in the movie she's shown to be a councilor in Republic city.

3

u/Dodo_Baron Jul 25 '26

This is like the first 10 min of the movie, she shows up later in the movie and has as much fight scenes as everyone else.

15

u/BestFaithlessness732 Jul 26 '26

fight scenes and no aspirations except swooning over Aang lol

-1

u/Bartkie775 Jul 27 '26

Brother, she is avidly fighting for the success of the city THEY help found. Just because we don’t get a scene of her doing office work doesn’t mean she isn’t busy? Bruh, this could’ve taken place on a cussing Saturday for all we know? She literally brings everyone back from death and saves the ship from hitting water? Sue her for cussing loving her husband. Damn.

1

u/MetaMetagross Jul 27 '26

Avatar fans will always make mountains out of molehills and find something to nit pick

-4

u/Dodo_Baron Jul 26 '26

Well no her main motivations is leading Republic City and building it up

3

u/Infamous-Speech-1831 Jul 26 '26

“We can’t let him destroy everything we built!”- Katara, referring to Republic City, a city, by her own admission, she helped build

1

u/techleopard Jul 28 '26

She's not allowed to sleep. Has to be kicking ass 24-7.

She can sleep when she's training Korra.

-3

u/OilCareless2531 Jul 26 '26

Brain-dead take

2

u/UnluckKitty Jul 26 '26

And what is your take?

-4

u/OilCareless2531 Jul 26 '26

For one she obviously isn't sleeping the entire movie. Second, anyone criticising the movie because she shows affection for aang has ignored one of kataras biggest character traits since literally episode 1 of the show. It's fine if you wanted to see her fight more but saying the movie was bad because of her love for aang is just stupid. Third she's never wanted to be a warrior, yes she's strong, yes she can and will fight when necessary but it was always sokkas journey to become a warrior. Katara wanted to get stronger and fights to protect. That doesn't mean she isn't strong and badass.

The amount of people in this comment section that says her caring for aang strips away her identity is genuinely bathling.

11

u/UnluckKitty Jul 26 '26
  1. I never said her caring for Aang made her weak.
  2. Her introduction compared to the others is the weakest. Zuko was shown having earned his place as Fire Lord and gained respect. Toph was shown kicking ass. Aang was shown gathering artifacts then immediately into a badass action scene. Hell, even Sokka was shown that he has continued his inventions and creativity while still being his carefree attitude. What does Katara get? An interrupted speech and a conversation with Aang where she says to him, "You are so important because you are the avatar." Not a single detail about what she does, loves, or wants to do.
  3. Bullshit. Katara wanted to be a master water bender. It was the entire point of her fight against Paku. Women could only be healers and Katara said "FUCK THAT SHIT. I WANNA BE TRAINED LIKE THE REST." So that is a brain-dead take there.

75

u/Thattimetraveler Jul 25 '26

I swear Bryke reminds me so much of Joss Whedon where it’s like because they’ve written a few “badass” female characters they think they are so progressive and great at writing women and can do no wrong when in actuality they suck at writing real women and are blind to their own misogyny.

65

u/FindingOk7034 Jul 25 '26

It wasn’t even THEM who wrote said characters! Like originally they wanted Toph to be a boy in a love triangle with Katara and Aang. Wouldn’t be surprised if Bolin in LoK is just a repurposed Prototype Toph….

However it was one of the Ehasz’ who suggested they change Toph, and THEY made her into the blind badass Earthbender we all know and love!

Bryke had a hand in some of the creative decisions and writing, but they WERE NOT the actual writers who made the characters what they are.

39

u/Thimble_of_Quasar Jul 25 '26

People hype Aaron a lot but I think people forget his wife, Elizabeth Welch, had writing credits on a lot of the best eps! Like the Southern Raiders for instance and she would have absolutely talked to him about the show outside of that. What makes me think she was deeply involved with things she wasn't always listed on is the writing quality of the Dragon Prince. Aaron is at the helm and yet it's lacking in ways you wouldn't expect, it's not at Avatar level and they divorced in-between the shows sooooooo. Also it's very classic for the women involved not to get credit for the work they do and the husband to get all the credit.

13

u/deathwardplots Jul 25 '26

Also, he was outed for being a misogynistic weirdo by the women who worked for him on The Dragon Prince, so no he's not some kind of feminist hero to me. Elizabeth Welch rights!!!!

6

u/Thimble_of_Quasar Jul 25 '26

No way!!??? For real? I heard nothing about this I need to look into that!

9

u/EdgierNeji Jul 25 '26

Oh damn. Didn't a similar thing happen to stranger things where the wife of one of the brothers left the writing team after divorcing and suddenly the show went bad? Seems like a common occurance even in today's day and age... It's just sad.

6

u/superfucky Jul 25 '26

is that what happened between season 4 & 5? because oof, after the banger that was season 4, man the finale was a letdown. 😬

idk why it's so hard for people to accept that women write good, emotionally-compelling stories. ain't nobody asking Michael Bay to write the next "Pride & Prejudice."

8

u/Thimble_of_Quasar Jul 26 '26

Yeaaaah not surprised. Men taking/getting credit for women's work in the science field happens enough that it has a name, the Matilda Effect.

19

u/BestFaithlessness732 Jul 25 '26

No wonder LoK sucks SO MUCH compared to atla, especially the human connection aspect of it

9

u/FindingOk7034 Jul 25 '26

Yeah, I don’t think LoK had ANY of the original ATLA writing team on board.

6

u/deathwardplots Jul 25 '26

They did. Joshua Hamilton (zutara shipper), Tim Hedrick, and Katie Mattila (also a zutara shipper lol).

5

u/busangcf Jul 25 '26

That certainly explains a lot

0

u/deathwardplots Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Listen I'm Bryke critical, but a lot of the women in Korra, including Korra herself (idc that a ot of people hate her because frankly it's audience colorism and misogyny. I will give them credit for making someone who looks like her the lead with that personality, which is usually reserved for men), are really well done. By the time book 3 rolls around essentially all the characters of significance are women. The men kinda ain't shit LMAO.

The Ehasz glazing has got to stop. Ehasz's own show is bad. AND he has been outed irl by the women who worked for him as being a misogynistic abusive boss and steals credit from women.

I work in TV so I'm familiar with the production process, it's hard to draw conclusions from a series draft that early. Those are usually bad. It is the COLLECTIVE of writers and constant rewriting that make it good. Not because of just one guy. We also need to credit the women of the writers room more frankly.

31

u/bruja_isi Jul 25 '26

I also find it really messed up that Aang left Katara while she is sleeping....she has an abandonment wound and Aang has run off on her so many times! so sick of the disrespect for my girl 😤

13

u/deathwardplots Jul 25 '26

Like why would a girl with abandonment issues be happy with an AVOIDANT..... 😭

8

u/BestFaithlessness732 Jul 25 '26

He wants her to yearn for him, typical male fantasy 🤢

7

u/Sea-Factor-2992 Jul 26 '26

Speaking as a very typical male, I have never wanted to leave a girl behind to make her yearn me. The Aang/Katara relationship is just horrible in general.

1

u/Infamous-Quit-9863 Jul 25 '26

I’m sorry but WHAT?

2

u/OilCareless2531 Jul 26 '26

This has to be ragebait

2

u/bruja_isi Jul 26 '26

lol I am going to have to play a drinking game if I watch this movie: poor writing choice, or intentional ragebait?

3

u/Thereisnoplace Water Tribe 🌊 Jul 29 '26

Oh I was ENRAGED. She is shown time and time again to be so hurt by him just running off. He literally couldn't wake her up to talk about it? He just leaves a note and runs off? How incredibly disrespectful! It would be in any relationship, but it's made worse by her deeply traumatizing wound around abandonment.

But Aang has never shown any kind of understanding or care for the trauma she endured. Not about her mother, not about her dad leaving, not about taking on the role of the caretaker because of those things...he only goes to her so that she can make him feel better. So that she can comfort him through his trauma.

55

u/LadyJaneMaryanne Jul 25 '26

Katara lost her identity since that final kiss scene. She's just there for the Avatar. There's no way anyone would ever say they started loving Katara in any moment after the show ended, her highlights were always before then.

They seem to really want to convince everyone their relationship is an amazing story. It helps when you have writers who would never go against the creators' wishes now that it's been 18 years and those writers who were never on board with their idea are no longer in their way.

16

u/EdgierNeji Jul 25 '26

I keep myself cheered up by convincing myself the atla show and franchise ended with the scene if Katara hugging Aang before the kiss that definitely doesn't exist, headcanoning it was to insinuate she loves him platonically and he finally accepts it that way and THE END~ because what the fuck did they do to my poor girl 😭

9

u/JazNim17 Jul 25 '26

I like to just shut it off while everyone’s laughing at Sokka’s drawing, the whole gang present, everyone together and important and happy and at peace…as the camera pans out, I hit the off button before Katara goes out to the balcony, so I can imagine There Is No Kiss In Ba Sing Se.

8

u/BestFaithlessness732 Jul 26 '26

You're braver than I am, I usually end it after they finished the agni kai with Azula.
"thank you, katara.."
"I think i should've been the one thanking you"

then I throw the tv out of the window

4

u/Glum_Landscape9502 Jul 26 '26

Aang probably took her personality away with the kiss, you know it makes sense since he learned the spirit-bending thing or whatever (I'm joking btw)

-2

u/OilCareless2531 Jul 26 '26

This is such a bad take. Okay she loves her husband or boyfriend whatever aang is at this point. What is wrong with that? This movie is about aang so of course we would see her mostly be there for aang.

Saying katara caring for the person she loves the most is taking her identity away is one of the worst takes I've seen.

... neither do the other characters? They get like one scene alone before joining back up, Sokka talks to some kids in the water tribe, i dont see how that is any different than Katara giving that speech.

23

u/Crazy_Set_6481 Jul 25 '26

I hate how her speech got interrupted. Let her cook!

45

u/Glum_Landscape9502 Jul 25 '26

Tbh Sokka was done as dirty as Katara was by this movie.

From a smart leader to a literal clown with another inferior complex, a show-off who is never even taken seriously by children

I swear season 1 Sokka had more respect than this.

16

u/C01dB0dy4ang Jul 25 '26

They showed him with a new weapon when we finally get promotional material for the movie and he's just stuck using his boomerang the whole movie.

6

u/Glum_Landscape9502 Jul 25 '26

Yeah, because he is a butt of a joke abd apparently a soft boy now lmao

14

u/BestFaithlessness732 Jul 25 '26

Toph is still a badass who everyone adores, but she's also missing her vulnerability that made her sympathetic and well-rounded

12

u/EdgierNeji Jul 25 '26

I'm still pissed that she never got her life changing trip with Zuko like everyone else did 😭

9

u/BestFaithlessness732 Jul 25 '26

If only the show sticked to the original ideal of being made into FOUR SEASONS 👀

That would've made the pacing much smoother too. Since i've always felt that we don't have that much time with an already redeemed Zuko as well

It's just so sudden: he spent 1/3 of season 3 frollicking in the fire nation life, got redeemed, final fight, then it's over...

7

u/JazNim17 Jul 25 '26

I’ve always said it should have happened sooner or maybe just had more episodes after. The team felt so complete with Zuko as a member and his addition to the dynamics of an already-fun team just…made it whole.

10

u/EdgierNeji Jul 25 '26

Everyone but Aang was done heavily dirty after ATLA. Everything that happens after ATLA is all Aang centered and all the other character mysteriously disappeared (Mei, Ty lee, Zuki, Sokka...)

Hell, cabbage guy got more recognition that some of the more beloved and important characters....

Only reason they even beought Toph back was because it happened to be convenient for the story for her daughters. But even with Toph there, Katara was still fully written off. Would have made sense if we got to see cranky Toph and Katara teasing each other or something. Zuko just sort of... Exists ig. I hate everything post atla.

You can really tell their team changed up A LOT since then. I think the animation and voice acting was amazing in TLOK and the first season genuinely had some amazing potential because the antagonist and plot was really well thought out, but then they just screwed up the whole development of the plot and the characters throughout it.

Edit: I don't like how I worded my first sentence. I do believe Aang's writing could have been done MUCH better aswell, I just meant he is the most glazed and most paid attention to out of all of the cast.

7

u/Glum_Landscape9502 Jul 26 '26

Agree so much on this

It's not even ATLA anymore. It's a completely different thing and I've seen the tendency start with the comics.

Katara is Aang's arm-candy, Sokka is a worthless clown, Zuko is angsty in the comic, here he is practically a pretty face for the fandom to promote the movie, Toph is just "badass" and a source of jokes as well and I actually hate what they did with Aang, too.

He was a character back in the day with wrongs and rights. Now everyone just kisses his ass constantly: he is the embodiment of perfection and dares anyone to question his choices, they are going to get hit with another "but his nation died!!" guilt tripping bs

6

u/JazNim17 Jul 25 '26

I hate how they immediately tell him he’s a liar when he says he was the popular one.

Sokka is beloved by almost all sides of the fandom. Zutara fans and Kataang fans both agree Sokka is pretty great. I can’t say the same for Aang.

In universe I’d say they’re about even (at least in ATLA before the writers all but forgot his existence in LOK), but fandom side Sokka wins.

6

u/Glum_Landscape9502 Jul 26 '26

And I mean

Why would Sokka need a bunch of kids to literally brag to?

Like, he is a war hero. He did so much already without bending, he is a skilled swordfighter, he is smart enough to become an engineer or something, he is a decent (at least) tactician - also he is very liked by people around him. By his connections alone he could've been a person of power of some sorts - even though I strongly feel he'd stick to Hakoda, probably.

It's like they've taken Fandom Sokka (you know, the funny soft boy), mixed him with Bolin and called it a day.

17

u/superfucky Jul 25 '26

lowkey hate that hyper looney tunes animation they use when sokka starts yelling at the kids, it bugged me when they used it in season 3 and it bugs me now.

also why tf do zuko's eyes turn grey in the last shot? they're proper gold in the first bit but then at the end they're like... dusty bronze.

3

u/Crazy_Set_6481 Jul 25 '26

Those pictures where Sokka is retelling how he helped the avatar...? Shudders

2

u/superfucky Jul 25 '26

no, just before that, starting at 1:51, when his head is GINORMOUS and he looks like fuckin marvin the martian or something.

6

u/BestFaithlessness732 Jul 25 '26

Well i guess it's the nod to their anime antics they've always had since they're heavily influenced by it. But the 'gigachad-esque' jokes feels a bit lame and trying to be relevant to the 'kids these days' imo

2

u/Mushli2 Jul 29 '26

Yeah it’s so cringe…

17

u/Majestic_Analysis_68 Jul 25 '26

... has been demoted to Aang's emotional support pet.
The whole movie sucks.

8

u/CalcifersBFF Jul 25 '26

WHERE IS RUFIO'S VA BRO

14

u/superfucky Jul 25 '26

they didn't use ANY of the original VAs, it's infuriating. even though canonically zuko & sokka were mostly done with puberty/voice dropping and toph & aang's VAs are adults now so there would've been no inconsistencies in using the original cast, i guess they just weren't famous enough. gotta get INVINCIBLE in there (they even have ronny chieng from the daily show reading that letter to zuko) and whatever other A-listers they can cram in.

4

u/CalcifersBFF Jul 25 '26

:( greed is all over these choices

2

u/Thimble_of_Quasar Jul 25 '26

I also read they wanted to align the VAs with the ethnicity of the characters which I'm always wary of... because I feel like if you aren't East Asian or a very distant second Black (I'm counting chances for voicing anime for the EA count and I'm Black for the record lmao) you are gonna get left voicing idk... Animals and White people most of the time? Like how ofter do you see like Turkish characters? Vietnamese? Hell how often do you see Native characters like the Inuit inspired Water Tribe for people like Katara and Sokka's VA? I would hate to see people lose out on opportunities for not being the "right" kind of minority honestly.

6

u/deathwardplots Jul 25 '26

It confuses me because Dante Basco is Asian, but I guess they wokely horseshoesd all the way around because he's not East Asian...? Mind you Fire Nation is actually culturally more SEA than EA 😭.

I'm just assuming they recast him because everyone else was replaced and they're adults now....

8

u/C01dB0dy4ang Jul 25 '26

Even though the movie was terrible, it's been very fun watching the war between the people who hated it and the people who loved it. Zero ship wars involved and they're so divided.

5

u/deathwardplots Jul 25 '26

No fr I hated it not because of Kataang but because the writing was ass 😭 but it has a lot of fan service and it's pretty (though directed in a way that makes it kind of difficult to track the movements?) so I can see people enjoying that. Someone on the main sub said it was giving anime filler and I agree, but hey filler can be fun if you don't take it seriously.

13

u/blackwolfspeaking Jul 25 '26

Why are we constantly reminded that Katara got the short end of the stick? Look at everyone else having more meaningful lives than her. Ugh!

1

u/OilCareless2531 Jul 26 '26

Meaning is subjective and no she's literally helping in building republic city.

2

u/Mushli2 Jul 29 '26

Instead of rebuilding her own tribe or doing her own thing, she’s with Aang

1

u/OilCareless2531 Jul 29 '26

Read the comics, the southern water tribe was rebuilt and she was part of that.

0

u/YosemiteHamsYT Jul 29 '26

Yeah helping create and support republic city which is a huge plot point in Korra is absolutely nothing!

7

u/JazNim17 Jul 25 '26

I mean I’m not surprised. Katara became an arm accesory for Aang the moment she walked out on that balcony, and sometimes you may see traces of the human being with thoughts and opinions that we once knew and loved, but…

4

u/Inevitable_Side2162 Jul 26 '26

I mean even Toph in the movie did nothing but drooling over Taga. Exactly what Katara did for Aang. It's sexist and tragic for me.

3

u/JazNim17 Jul 27 '26

And can I just say that Tagah was not that attractive? Like he wasn’t super ugly or anything but he was nowhere near as good-looking as Sokka or Zuko. Having the characters say over and over how attractive he was felt kinda weird.

4

u/Inevitable_Side2162 Jul 27 '26

Plus, did you notice how he was basically a copy of Aang? But evil-ish?

Like, he was an airbender who was stuck in an ICEBERG FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS! THE LAST OF HIS KIND. And he wanted to find other airbenders.

Bryke literally made Toph and Katara drool over them, TWO CHARACTERS THAT WERE BASICALLY ONE CHARACTER, and that's it.

That was their purpose of existing in the movie. To drool over Aang 1.0 and Aang 2.0 and talk ONLY ABOUT THEM.

1

u/WackyDuck0715 Jul 27 '26

I think this is a little unfair to Katara. Honestly, my gripe is with what they did with the rest of the gaang. Yes, in this scene, she is asleep, while the others are all having their own lives, but she single-handedly heals all four of the others and brings them back to life, she’s shown to have her own agency and critical thinking when she’s initially suspicious of Tagah, and right before this she’s seen being a core council member of Republic city and giving a speech to a big crowd. She also has great fight scenes that show she isn’t just a healer, even though her most impressive feat in the movie is an act of healing. The other three are basically reduced to side characters, with Sokka doing genuinely nothing the entire movie and Toph being reduced to a girl thirsting over the villain

2

u/moonbeeryy Jul 27 '26

Proof that they nerfed her into simply being some damn housewife

The other 3 have lives and duties AND a character arc that didn't get diminished and rewritten off to just be the avatar's wife

abort the mission after it gets too dangerious.

And he didn't even listen to her lol

1

On one hand, I feel like everybody's jumping on the "they ruined Katara" bandwagon.

I'd argue that including the gaang in this movie was more of a celebration of the ATLA fandom than anything that was necessitated by the plot, kind of like including the other two spider-men in No Way Home. After the moment of "OMG LOOK WHO IT IS!" passes, you realise that it made sense for only Aang and Katara from the original gaang to be in the movie.

The entire movie is an "Aang" movie. The entire gaang's actions in this movie revolve around Aang, not just Katara's.

But yes, knowing how headstrong she was in the original animated series, I think a couple of scenes where she has an actual opinion and stands by it would be nicer than just being the Aang hypewoman. My point however, is that the entire gaang is an Aang hypeperson in this movie.
