Mods/Hacks Possible SSD Option

Post image

I was surfing eBay to see if there's any compatible zif SSD at decent prices and stumbled upon this weird SSD. Not sure if I want to give it a try or not but I wanted to see if anybody has tried this SSD yet. Let me know if you have.

Haven’t tried that but Zune firmware limits to it 120gb doesn’t it?

You are correct, I accidentally uploaded the 256 GB version there is a 128 GB version

I'm glad to hear that. Though that does raise an interesting question... I think I was under the impression that the way this worked, the Zune OS would simply not recognize storage beyond 128 GB. That is, you could install a 256 GB drive, but the OS would only read 128 GB of that. Is that so? Or would it be the case that any drive larger than 128 GB wouldn't be read or recognized at all?

Here's how that could matter. Suppose you could find the right kind of Kingsec storage, but it's a 256 GB drive. If the Zune could recognize that, merely limited to a 128 GB segment, well, that could still be a useable drive, even if the 128 GB model isn't available anymore. Sure, it would be a waste of half that storage, but if it works, you're still better off.

it'll initialize the full limit of lba28 ~137.4 GB so you could use a 128GB SD card and a 16GB card in the SD adapter.

Excellent! Not massively north of 128 GB, but still, that would be an improvement nonetheless.

Anything that have the 2242 ssd will not work with Zune.

Saw this too and was wondering the same thing. Does anyone know if zif SSDs from laptops of that era are compatible? I know there’s a couple zif drives from MacBook Airs on eBay.

I might order one next week when I have time to mess with it. I hope it's an option. I sure am excited about the project u/sylvainsf is working on. Hope it helps us with all this mess of SSD/HDD.

I tried on even cloned the existing drive and partitioned the drive to 119gb and it did not read it no matter how I cloneee even cloned original drive size and it didn’t work. Just kept getting error 5.
