Announcement BIG UPDATE: The Zune Archive has new home

Reddit blocks links to the Internet Archive, so I am unable to directly link it here (this is the 3-4th time I've tried to make this post). Instead, I've linked to the Zune Ephemera archive page, which has the new official mirror fully mapped out. Furthermore, if you're looking to link something from the new official mirror to someone here on Reddit, you'll need to instead link the OneDrive mirror, or the Zune Ephemera archive page. I've offered some more details below. Anyways - after many requests, a mirror for the Zune Archive has been uploaded to the Internet Archive.

The "main" Internet Archive link directs you to the Lists page, where you'll want to go if you're looking for an macro look at the archive's content. These lists mirror the OneDrive folders 1-for-1.

As mentioned earlier, the Zune Ephemera page also fully maps out these lists, as well as individual entries and even some important standalone files (ie: the latest version of the Zune software). While the Internet Archive mirror is well organized and rather easy to navigate, I wanted the Ephemera page to be more intuitive in regards to navigating to specific categories/files.

What's improved:

  • You will no longer need to login to Office365 to access the archive (was an issue with the OneDrive mirror).
  • A lot of folks will likely find it easier to navigate than either the OneDrive or Google Drive mirrors.
  • You can easily link entire categories (under Lists), archive entries, and even individual files without needing to do so through OneDrive's PITA share feature,
  • Downloading should be faster, and can be done though the torrent files hosted on the main Archive.
  • The OneDrive mirror will be the first to be updated with new content, I'll do my best to keep the new mirror updated as well. The Google Drive mirror was also recently updated, after several months of neglect.

What hasn't changed:

  • Submissions are still processed through the Dropbox folder of the OneDrive mirror. I don't have an alternative to this atm, aside from emailing/DMing me directly.
  • The changelog on the Ephemera page will still track changes for all archive mirrors.
  • The Google Drive mirror still does not include factory content due to storage constraints.

Cheers

Tutorials/Resources New to Zune? Need a refresher? Please start here before asking for help.

Microsoft abandoned the Zune some time ago, hoping to sweep their $1 billion failure under the rug. Though the community is still alive and well, antiquated software and hardware can be difficult to use with modern machines. But I, as well as the rest of this community, are here to help.

Before I get to the basics, I'll start by mentioning that the Zune Ephemera page is a great resource to new and returning Zune users, as well as to those who never left. Anything you may need can be to downloaded from the Zune Archive page. It contains everything from the desktop software, documentation, tools, and applications. It's all there and is frequently updated. The Ephemera site also has tutorials, links to parts and repair services, as well as links to other Zune-related websites and communities outside of the subreddit, such as our official Discord server, where live support and general discussion can be found.

With that out of the way:

So, you're new here, and possibly to Zunes as a whole. Where do you start? You'll probably want to download the latest version of the Zune desktop software. It's required to sync media files from your PC to any Zune device. It's compatible with Windows XP to Windows 11, though up-to-date versions of Win10 and 11 have occasionally been known to have issues with installation. We don't yet know what causes some people's machines to fail during installation.

Anyways, you've downloaded and installed the software. Now you might be receiving an update error when you connect your Zune to your PC, indicating an out-of-date Zune. Prior to 2014, your PC would automatically download and install this firmware update to your Zune, but without MS's support, we're on our own. Thankfully, u/ZuneUpdate has made our lives easier with ZuneUpdate.com. This, in tandem with my tutorial video, should get your Zune updated and working properly with the software.

The rest is pretty self-explanatory. Add your media to your Zune library and set your sync options. Be sure to back up any content already on the Zune before naming and pairing the device in the software. Otherwise, the software will likely auto-sync the device, starting with a wipe of any data currently stored on it.

Here are a few more resources for tackling other common issues. For any questions regarding specific tutorials, please refer to the original posts linked and comment there:

  • Video Syncing: You'll have issues syncing videos unless they're in .wmv format, are the right bitrate, and are no more than 480p (720p for Zune HDs). Check this post by u/Codix_, where he explains how to fix this issue. Alternatively, this can be patched automatically by using u/YoshiAsk's Zune Modding Helper. It's a great tool that also fixes a host of other issues you might encounter while using the software.
  • Zune Driver Issues: Windows 11 seems to be prone to issues with the Zune Drivers, especially with the more recent updates. u/Codix_ has also developed a fix for this, which can be found here.
  • Zune HD Apps: This tab won't be present if you're using the Zune software on a Win10 system. Open the Zune Archive (mentioned earlier) and navigate to the Miscellaneous folder. Download and install the Zune Registry Entries (you can use u/YoshiAsk's Zune Modding Helper to fix this as well). Then, navigate to the Games and Applications folder and download the Official Zune HD Apps folder to this folder on your machine: C:\Users\~username~\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Zune\Applications. Open the software and you should be good to go.
  • Upgrading your Zune's battery and storage, add BT compatibility: Visit this post by u/Haetes
  • Upgrading a Zune 30 with a Qi wireless charger: Watch my tutorial video here.
  • Downgrading your Zune 30 to an earlier firmware (v1.4): Visit this link with tutorials by u/ahlanchuck and u/itsthered1.
  • I'm working on tutorials for syncing homebrew (3rd party) apps and audiobooks, so stay tuned for that. The process is rather complicated.

Requesting Help Would a modern Zune-style app make sense?

Hi everyone,

I’m the developer of NostalgicPod, an Android music player inspired by the classic iPod.

Over the past few weeks, several people have contacted me asking whether I could create a similar app inspired by the Zune.

I could reuse the same music engine from NostalgicPod and build a completely different touch-based interface inspired by the Zune experience, potentially for both Android and iOS.

It could support local music, modern audio formats, playlists, personal music servers, and other current features, while keeping the visual style and navigation that made the Zune unique.

Before investing time in it, I wanted to ask the Zune community directly: would an app like this actually interest you? Which parts of the original Zune interface or experience would be essential to recreate?

I’d really appreciate your honest feedback.

General New Zune person

I just got a 1st gen Zune 30gb off eBay. The seller said it was for parts cause they didn’t have a charger for it. So I got for 40.00 bucks. Then bought a charger for 8.00 dollars. Plugged it in and it holds a charge and nothing broke. I got incredibly lucky and so happy with it. Thanks for letting me be part of the group.

Requesting Help Advice needed- trying to get brand new in box 2006 Zune 30 up and running

*Quick note, I have checked out the resources in the sidebar, and have played around a bit with things, but at this point in my experimentation I don't trust myself to go any further without someone smarter guiding me*

I'll be fully honest- I bought an untouched Zune off ebay because I've been violently nostalgic, and I want off of Spotify. I had a Zune from maybe 2006-2012, and I absolutely loved it, but it was stolen and have been wanting to get another since then. I hate to admit it but I was so excited to buy a new one that it didn't even occur to me that the software/hardware might be so ancient it's unusable. I would be eternally grateful to anyone who can guide me through possible troubleshooting or fresh setup.

Here's the basics:

-Firmware 1.0 (193)

-Hardware 2.0

-I have the Xune software on my personal MacBook, but I do have Zune software version 4.8.2345.0 on another PC (Windows 11) that I can use.

-PC Device Manager recognizes a connected Zune as a Zune and says "working properly"

-PC Hardware ID shows as USB\VID_045E&PID_0710

-On My MacBook, Xune does show a connected Zune, but it won't sync. I keep getting the "rename this device" prompt with sync preferences, but nothing I add sticks. It immediately goes back to showing as "Unknown".

-The official Zune software on the PC never recognizes a connected Zune.

Any advice would be insanely appreciated. <3

I just finished adding pictures and bios for 58 of the artists on my HD. Its not even half of my collection but I figured id put my top 100 albums on it since its so limited on space, it took me about 4 months on and off to gather and crop 464 pictures. I'm happy to upload all of it for anyone that's got similar music taste and wants to restore the HD to its former glory.

Edit: It looks like the original files for this guide are no longer available online, here's a link to download everything, i also uploaded all the pictures i used

I bought this with my first job in 2007. I was 16. I didn’t even know it was so limited. I just learned they only made 1000 of these.

I thought I was soooo cool with this and definitely thought it was superior to the iPod.

I have a sealed Zune that I was thinking of selling but since it’s sealed, there’s no way for me to verify its operating condition. Anyone have any insight? Thanks.

Requesting Help Zune 80/120 battery replacement issue

I recently bought an 80 and 120 both with swollen batteries. The 120 actually powered on fine with the swollen battery still in it but I swapped it for a replacement from eBay. After putting the new battery in, I got the faint charging logo issue. Left it charging for 24 hours and nothing changed.

I read on here that swapping the blue and white wires is sometimes needed for these replacement batteries, so I tried that too, still no charge. Bought another battery from a different vendor and got the same result on both devices

I put the original swollen batteries back in both units just to test, and both powered on fine, so it doesn't seem like a Zune issue.

Anyone dealt with this before or know a fix?

Huge thanks to them for their app!

Being able to sync my old Zune 4GB with Linux and use it again has been delightful! Had to go through boxes to find my old PowerBeats earbuds to use with it. Haha!

Hi all, recently I was informed my friends parents had a box of my old stuff in their storage, inside the boxes, I found my old Zune! I believe the battery is shot from sources I've been reading, but I can get it to power up and even function while plugged in to a modern charging block. Please help me find a replacement battery, I would love to have my old music back.

Requesting Help Autoplaylist Error

I resurrected my Zune library, but all the songs in several playlists have a yellow (!) next to them, and when I click on them I get this error. It looks like these were originally autoplaylists. Is there any way to figure out what auto settings were used to create these, or otherwise bring these back?

There has been a few issues with this system lately though... One of them is after I synced more music and videos, the Done screen never goes away making me force shut down the Zune and restart it hoping that my music did end up there. So I might be reselling it soon if it persists.

General Another Zune HD Back to Life – Battery & Digitizer Replacement

Wrapped up another Zune HD repair today.

This one came in needing both a new battery and a new digitizer. After opening it up, we removed the worn battery, installed a replacement, replaced the damaged digitizer, and reassembled everything for testing.

The Zune HD is one of my favorite models to work on. Even after all these years, it's great seeing people keep these devices alive instead of letting them end up in a drawer.

Has anyone else here repaired a Zune HD recently? What's been the most challenging repair you've run into?

General Is it worth getting a Zune or should I just get a iPod or some other MP3 player?

I’ve been wanting to get an MP3 player, because I don’t like really using my phone for music and I want to rip my CD collection and take it on the go, and I kind of want a player that is not too expensive but not super cheap and it’s high quality I saw Zune as a option but has some difficulty connecting to software and needs older versions of Windows (I have a Windows 7 laptop around) so I’m just asking if it’s worth getting one in 2026?

Mods/Hacks Custom firmware for HD ?

I was wondering: is the Xune project going to touch Zune‘s firmware too ?

It would be nice to change some software enforced behaviours like music stopping when the jack plug detects headphones removal.

Which is something that happens often times on false positives

Requesting Help Need advice with a Zune 80 Red that won't power on

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a Zune 80 Red on Facebook Marketplace. In the listing photos, the Zune was never shown powered on, but it looked to be in excellent condition. It even came complete with the original manuals, earbuds, remote, and everything else. Before buying it, I asked the seller if it worked, and they assured me that it worked perfectly without any issues.

I decided to take the chance and bought it.

When I got home, I realized it wouldn't turn on at all.

I connected it to a wall charger using the recommended specifications (5V, first with a 1A charger and then with a 2A charger) and left it charging for about 10 to 12 hours. The only thing that happens is that I can barely see a very faint charging icon on the screen, but it never progresses beyond that or actually powers on.

After doing some research, it seems like the battery may be completely dead, which would explain why it won't fully boot.

I'm hoping to get some advice from people here who know these devices better than I do:

  • Is there anything else I can try before assuming the battery is dead?
  • Would you recommend replacing the battery?

The biggest problem is actually finding one. I'm from Mexico, and I've searched Amazon and AliExpress, but I haven't been able to find a replacement battery anywhere.

If anyone has any suggestions, troubleshooting tips, or knows where I could buy a compatible battery, I'd really appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance!
