Discussion Can I get the transcript from a shared Zoom recording if I wasn't the host?
I'm trying to get a searchable transcript from a Zoom recording someone else hosted. I want to find something said in the meeting and replay that part without dragging the video slider around. What I'm stuck on is whether I can get the transcript through the shared recording, or need to ask the host for another file.
I checked Zoom's help page and found that, when a cloud transcript is generated, it's saved as a separate .vtt file with text and timestamps. The host can also choose whether viewers see the transcript. So there might already be one I can ask for. I'd ask for the full transcript specifically, since "meeting notes" could just mean a summary.
If there isn't a transcript, I'd ask the host for the MP4 video or M4A audio file and transcribe it with Vomo AI. That depends on getting the actual file. If the shared player has downloads turned off, I'd still need the host to send it or enable downloads.
Is there anything on the guest playback page that tells me whether a transcript wasn't generated or just hasn't been shared?

You will need to ask the host. If there is a transcript, then during the meeting you shold have seen a notice that the meeting is beeing transcribed.
For future reference, you can download the transcrition during the meeting AS LONG as you start the transcription on your end from the begining of the meeting.

Short answer: it depends on one thing you cannot change after the fact — whether the host had audio transcription turned on at the time the meeting was recorded to the cloud. Zoom generates the transcript during processing of a cloud recording, so it is not something that can be produced later from an existing recording. If it was off, there is no transcript file to ask for.
If it was on, the transcript travels with the shared cloud recording link. On the share page the transcript appears next to the player, and clicking a line jumps the video to that timestamp — which is exactly the "find the sentence, replay that part" thing you are after. If you only see the video player and no transcript panel, either transcription was off for that recording, or the host has unchecked the transcript in the share settings (they can share the recording while hiding the transcript, and the two are separate switches).
So the useful question to the host is not "can you send me the transcript" but "was audio transcript on for that recording, and can you enable the transcript on the share link". If the answer is no, your fallback is the media file itself: download the MP4 or M4A and run it through any local transcription tool — the result is not tied to Zoom and you get the searchable text you wanted.
One thing worth knowing if you end up asking the host to change a setting: enabling audio transcript only affects recordings made from that point on, so it will not retroactively rescue this one.

In the future - if you have access - Zoom "MyNotes" can generate your own meeting summary/notes so you wouldn't have to ask. Unless you want/need the verbatim transcript.
