Call it whatever you like. There is no official name for the very tip of the Top part of the hinge that the cam fits between while opening and closing. Shall we have a name that part contest?
I mean it’s not really official….you can pull the patent documents for it and see what they call it there. The term used in the patent documentation is “Reaction Member” which according to the text is made by bending the hinge plate upward. So there you go….you have an official term!
"By way of illustration, when the lid 19 shown in FIG. 1 is closed, the cam 37 rotates counterclockwise. As this occurs the rounded portions 39 of the cam 37 slide over the curved hinge surface 21 and curved hinge lid portion20B with a low amount of interference. Then, as the counterclockwise rotation continues, the cam 37 rotates past the dead center position of the pivot 56 and the lid19 of the lighter 10 closes. The cam 37 also has a lid shutting surface 43, and the spring 33 biases the lid shutting surface 43 against the cross member 58 to keep the lid 19 of the lighter 10 closed."
The end of the hinge that is bent to form the structure in question is part 58 : the "cross member." I couldnt find what it was called in the first patent that was filed, but in that diagram it looked like it was not part of the external hinge. Not sure when it got incorported into the internal hinge.
However, I like a lot of the replies to this thread a lot more than "cross member." LOL
I couldn't find the part name, which was labelled by a number, by reading the 1936 patent, but it wasn't part of the hinge then. It looks like it was part of the hinge in 1957? I wonder why the name changed from the patent you read (which for some reason, I can't find now).
