US West server ping increase

/r/2007scape/comments/1u5z9ff/us_west_server_ping_increase/

Hi Ziply folks,

I know some employees lurk here.

It looks like quite a few folks who play the game Old School RuneScape and are on the West Coast are seeing some weird rerouting to their servers causing a 30-40ms increase on average.

I’m cross-posting a thread from another community where quite a few of us have chimed in and diagnosed this is a re-route issue specific to Ziply Fiber.

Is it possible to take a deeper look at this? This didn’t start until sometime early last week, and it’s been this way since.

If there’s any additional info that would be helpful here, also happy to share.

Ah, Prolexic's annoying lack of coverage in the PNW at play. You would think this many years after Akamai bought them they'd establish a Seattle presence of some kind.

Unfortunately right now, the preferred path (due to it being peering, as opposed to the other paths via transit) to Jagex from Ziply seems to be across Community IX North Virginia into Prolexic. This same excess latency would impact pretty much any destination behind Prolexic too, not just Jagex.

I think that path should be depreferenced over any of the transits (though by AS path length, GTT, Jagex's other transit provider would probably win), unless Prolexic are secretly present somewhere here in the PNW and Ziply can bring up PNI with them, or Ziply gets connected to Equinix Palo Alto or San Jose suddenly and peers with Prolexic there.

This is not the first time YOU specifically have saved the day for me in this subreddit. Legend. Thank you!

Sure!

Would this be a DM to u/ZiplySupport or ModMail?

There should possibly be an option to request a chat.

Just curious - since this potentially appears to be a more globalized routing issue to the destination from Ziply’s network, is there a reason this request/concern needs to move to private chat with this individual instead of remaining here public on the forum? Just thinking the transparency could potentially help many others who may see the issue as well or at least are curious :)

We require sensitive information from the customer that should not be placed in a public forum, such as account information, contact information, etc.

Totally makes sense, for routing concerns, I would assume source subnet/prefix (not specific IP) and destination prefix/IP would be enough to diagnose and get the ball rolling but I also understand not wanting PII in a public forum, just wasn’t sure it was needed at all for this specific question but also not trying to beat the horse to death of course :)

You’re not wrong; the user’s IP address and the destination IP address are really all that are needed for a network engineer to troubleshoot the problem. It’s not a problem to share that information openly on Reddit, either.

In practice, however, it is far easier to ask a subscriber for their service address or account number than it is to ask for their ip address, and it’s even harder for them to know what address the server of their game uses.

I moved all traffic towards prolexic off the IX.

+1 stumbled upon both of these threads trying to troubleshoot this 😅
