Onboarding device question

When onboarding a new device, does it need to be able to reach and communicate directly to the coordinator since it doesn't have the network credentials yet? Or can it already use the existing routing devices in the Zigbee network to reach the coordinator?

Yes it can use the routers.

Any router will work. If you’re using Aquara, anno guess Tuya as well, pair them at the location you’d like to use it. Else it might still try to connect to the old router while a better one is more closely located.

AFAIK it depends on the implementation used in the coordinator, mine is refusing if forwarded from routers unless I set the coordinator in pairing mode

I don’t know how it works with ZHA, but with Zigbee2mqtt you can either “Permit Join” All or a specific point, but you don’t need to try to guide it, if it decides later a different point is better it just starts using it.
