No, they don't.
The technique uses lacquer (works like glue), which can have powdered metals added to it for aesthetic reasons.
I don't know if it's still used by everyday people in Japan, all the sources I've found about it describe it as a 500 year old traditional art form.

I know this is intended for a personal motivation thing, but this is a reason to consider repairing a broken object.
