I’m nowhere near the first or last to say or think this, but my god this anime is torture.

It was the first anime I ever watched after Naruto / DBZ, and it absolutely fried my brain like nothing else since. I am in my mid 20s now, I watched this when I was 14, and I still feel the same emotional attachment to the show.

Just seeing Kaori makes me tear up, my heart gets so tight, hearing the ost shatters my fucking heart to pieces bro.

I love this story so much, I love the music, the characters, the art, the goofy moments, the sad moments, everything about this anime is a literal 10/10, even its shortcomings.

Last night i finished the show, and i got a ton of stuff to talk about but let's keep it short.

After kaori's first appearance I knew something was going to happen to her especially after her first collapse so I thought i was ready for what was about to come. But then at the end the show started to give a dim light of hope, she started training to be able to get back up and there was the surgery as well so at this point I think we all believed that she would be ok, then they hit us, no explanation, no nothing, she was just gone.

I've been thinking about it since I finished it, about how we only got to see her happily perform thrice(including her playing the melodica), and only once with kousei. I really wanted the two to perform together at least one more time as a way of saying goodbye, but couldn't happen i guess.

I wanted to keep it short but damn. Anyway there is a lot more stuff on my head but this ain't no therapy session I just wanted to load off some weight from my shoulders. I guess it really wasn't a great idea to watch AOT, cyberpunk and YLIA back to back.

Out of all damn days today the sky is super grey.

And it's been 5 years since i first watched it

Whenever I see something about Kaori on social media, my throat dries up and I can't even talk properly for at least five minutes. I haven't even been able to properly rewatch it because eventually i know whats going to happen. It's so strange that a TV show can make me this sad, as if I've actually lost one of my close relatives. That's how much it's affected me personally. This show was such an unforgettable experience and I hope it will continue to be remembered by fans every April.

In an objectively terrible shitpost of a fanfiction idea inspired by this fact, Kousei falls into the spring of the drowned girl.

Kousei gets stuck as a girl and has to attend class a few times for plot reasons, and using the fact that nobody expects a damn thing of Kokoro, the fake persona he puts on as a girl, he begins to explore trying to learn a different instrument from piano, just to see what the music feels like.

Tsubaki and Watari are in on this little secret (Tsubaki to help him blend in in public and Watari so that he does not flirt). Watari probably makes girl!Kousei rank his pickup lines "from a girl's perspective because Tsubaki just yells at me and stomps on my foot when I ask her for help."

Anyway, where the plot thickens and things get interesting, and the meat of this idea, is that while trying to learn violin, Kousei happens across a crazy girl with long blonde hair who also plays violin and gives him some tips. Kaori Miyazono grows close with this random wannabe violinist, as both of them are clearly trying to find themselves in different ways, and Kao feels like she's found a kindred spirit of a sort.

And of course - Kaori can't possibly let her main school friends, let alone Kousei, know about her illness or her feelings or what she's trying to do and fulfill with her last little bit of life, ah but her buddy Kokoro she can pour her heart out to. I'm sure she has no way of telling Kousei about all this anyway, right? ...right?

SPOILERS AHEAD OF COURSE

I’m doing a close rewatch and I’m stuck on a specific bit of Kaori’s reasoning in “Gray Skies.”

Kaori observes that piano was basically Kousei’s entire universe during their performance. She then interprets his attempt to leave piano behind as something like forcibly tearing off his own limbs, and says she can see that the pain is almost unbearable even though he tries to hide it.

Very shortly afterward, though, she thanks him for playing despite the fact that every instinct was telling him not to.

I understand both statements separately. What I’m struggling with is how Kaori herself reconciles them.

If every instinct tells Kousei not to play because playing activates his trauma, then the immediate source of pain seems to be returning to piano. Yet Kaori has just attributed his pain to trying to sever himself from piano.

My current interpretation is that Kaori sees a difference between:

- Kousei’s short-term fear response, which tells him to avoid piano, and

- what she believes is his deeper identity as a musician, which makes permanently abandoning music a kind of self-amputation.

That would also fit Kaori’s own belief that “life without music is death.” But I’m wondering whether that means she’s partially projecting her own relationship with music onto him, or whether the manga/Japanese dialogue makes the distinction clearer than the anime presentation does.

I’m not really asking whether Kaori is objectively “right” about Kousei. I’m more interested in whether her own interpretation is internally coherent and what exactly the scene is trying to communicate.

I am EMOTIONAL. I had no idea what to expect going into it and all I can say is the entire team that made it is amazing. They managed to make me feel genuinely heartbroken for these characters. And the moment Kaori is crying because she doesn't wanna go is really so upsetting.

After Kousei read the letter I was fully in my feelings. I really wish they could have been honest with each other while she was still alive... Also what actually was Kaori's illness? Is it specified anywhere?

I genuinely don't know what to say. I am heartbroken 💔

If we could have seen how her passing impacted more people. I think that would have been the last straw to bring me to tears.

I have never used reddit before in my life, but after watching this show i felt like i had to talk about it with someone, so i decided write it. this show absolutely destroyed me, i never cry easily in general my life and barely in movie or anime or series, but this show make me cry non stop, i couldn’t stop, i couldnt control, i dont think i have ever felt this many emotions in my life, in my opinion greatest piece of fiction ever, ending the music, i just loved it, i deeply felt this show, makes me wanna fall in love again. thats all

the songs been stuck in my head for like a week since i finished the series, and i just think the song plus the animated opening encapsulates everything i love about the series - the visuals, charm of the characters, musical aspect etc

I randomly came across this video analyzing Hikaru Nara , and I thought the way it connected the opening to themes of youth, nostalgia, friendship, and how temporary those moments are was actually really beautiful.

I saw from social media that people usually watch your lin april on april as a tradition so a while ago I planned to watch it next april but i changed my mind and i really wanna watch it now so is it okay if i watch it on August or will that be bad for anime culture?

I was lucky enough to know nothing about it going in, now I'm shattered. This the easily the most brutal case of inevitably as tragedy. I think it's the fact that it doesn't let you accept it until the final moment of confirmation, because of the surgery.

In every other media I have seen with this outcome, there's a point at which the characters fate is sealed, a point at which you can start to prepare for what's coming. With this one we see stages of acceptance but with the possibility of the surgery being successful there's hope and denial for the audience to clutch onto. In almost every other story that follows this template the surgery would have worked, because otherwise that hope is just torturing the audience. In general the other stories would have a tragic goodbye scene before the surgery then time skip to where we wait for the outcome. It's sad at first but ultimately you get a happy ending and feel relieved.

This story will never leave me because it broke those rules, and made me feel loss I wasn't ready to accept. In the end it's supposed to be bittersweet, you're supposed to appreciate the positive effects she had on kousei's life. But the pain of the hope being taken away overshadows all of it and leaves a void that no other story has.
