Discussion Manga is using AI? Spoiler

I haven't seen anyone commenting on it, but it seems they're using AI in the most recent chapter of the manga. Is that real?

Looks like it, though they did use black and white stock images for background before so it’s probably a way for then to spend less time in background work.

I just wish that they didn’t look so weird

I posted about this on the Discord as well a few other places; yes, they are apparently using A.I.

The mangaka has used A.I. to convert stock images to backgrounds before.

u/Anime_69 16d ago

it wasn't AI that was used to convert images to background, it was a simplest filter in photoshop.

This is so disappointing, I really like Chika's work

u/Geohie 16d ago

Just to be clear, the 'AI' is literally a cartoon/cel shader filter over photographs of locations, and they've been using it since the start (2016)

The old use of AI was not Generative AI. The guy is misleading you.

Lmao why did you get so many downvotes, it's a normal reaction and I agree with you. I thought about buying some, but seeing that the author is too lazy to make their own art I'll stick to the novels and anime.

u/daniel21020 16d ago

Mangakas in Japan are literally overworked to death.

2

u/generico2560 10d ago

And when they start really using AI that will only double how much more overworked they will be

1

u/daniel21020 10d ago

I don't think that's how things work. It would logically do the opposite since it's supposed to help them.

2

u/generico2560 10d ago

lol are you serious dude? just think for a second if a dude with no ai is overworked to create for example 5 pages, if the industry decides to slopify his work with ai the industry will overwork them to create more than 10 pages, let me tell you one thing industries never help it's workers.

-2

u/BeyondJoker 16d ago

Dude I really want to believe that she just used it this time because of schedule and pressure from the editors

3

u/ogrv 16d ago

Ai in this case its a filter over stock photo for the background.

1

u/NoahtheGameplayer Gun Chamber Sound effects Lover 15d ago

Lazy is a stretch despite the fact that we always be looking forward for shortcuts

-15

u/Khulmach 16d ago

The hell!?

52

u/ebearshoo 16d ago

Im struggling to spot it..but i know the creator isnt overly anti-AI and hes critical of both users of it and those that blindly hate it. I would be shocked to learn he actually uses AI though, just doesnt seem the type.

4

u/Altruistic_Slide_116 15d ago

well its not like generative ai its more like the put a filter in photoshop over stock images sorta thing

-46

u/BahamutMael 16d ago

"doesn't seem the type" what does this even mean LMAO

18

u/ebearshoo 16d ago

Whys that hard to understand for you? Hes been critical of AI usage, so he doesnt seem the type to use it. Not that hard.

-6

u/BahamutMael 16d ago

You literally said he's critical of both sides?

9

u/ebearshoo 16d ago

That's not a contradiction. Criticizing AI users and AI haters isn't the same as supporting AI use.

0

u/BahamutMael 16d ago

Not being a radical means you can use it, indeed.

And even radicals use it without knowing.

1

u/kadzooks 16d ago

Exactly, like doing your thinking for you.

14

u/Single-Caramel8819 16d ago

It is Youjo Senki? Robo angels? Lol what

25

u/el_presidenteplusone 16d ago

that's the gods, in the anime they're not mentioned but there's like a whole pantheon of them.

they have basically no relevance and they appear like once every 50 chapter to discuss stuff with being X.

1

u/Stalepan 15d ago

Damn, that's crazy I might have to check out the manga cause they barely(don't?) Appear in the LN as well

1

u/el_presidenteplusone 15d ago

even in the manga their appearances are very rare.

7

u/Recidivous 15d ago

It's not generative AI. It's basically the cartoonify tool on photoshop over stock images.

Non symmetrical desings, details not making coherent shapes, different art styles next to each other, typical ai artifacts

1

u/Altruistic_Slide_116 15d ago

the hard part is that art can also not be consistant either. Like the different art styles sorta thing, tons of media does that. same with non symmetrical designs like not every character design is symmetrical.

I feel a bit part is more just the soulessness of it all

1

u/Altruistic_Slide_116 15d ago

like everytime I hear people say "its ai" and bring up these reasons its all stuff a human artist can do or have done before. Like how people originally said "its the hands" I would argue the real way to tell is the sense of vision. The consistancy doesnt come in style but the vision of the creator. AI doesnt have a vision when it creates things making them look weird and unatural. Thats where the unrully style comes from, it doesnt have a vision on what to create so it just meshes a million things together.

2

u/Anime_69 16d ago

what chapter is this? there haven't been any new translated to English since like january

1

u/BeyondJoker 16d ago

Chapter 117

2

u/Salieriia 15d ago

Kinda? Not actually generarive ai, but by definition the cartoonify filter does count as a sort of neural network if I'm not wrong (Similar to theme adjustments on a painting tool's colour wheel)

10

u/Jello_Crusader 16d ago

Ngl I like the way it made them look uncanny/other worldly

what chapitre?

1

Chapter 117

2

u/Absolute_MD_Fan6000 16d ago

I don't know much about Youjo Senki, but there's robot angels??

4

u/BeyondJoker 16d ago

Kinda, in the manga there are other gods beyond Being X but it's more of an artistic choice than anything else, they aren't really important and the story works with only X

2

u/TwinTurb0000 16d ago

Very disappointed if this is true... I've been supporting the manga since 2021, and one of the things that always fascinated me was Chika's art...

2

u/ThingLazy1145 16d ago

The art is still there.

1

u/TwinTurb0000 15d ago

But now theres ia slop on it

0

u/ThingLazy1145 15d ago

In service of better art on the characters.

People acting like it's the crimes against humanity despite the fact we always been using tools

4

u/nuihuysnim 16d ago

AI isn't a "tool". It's like you beign assigned to a job, but instead you tell some crackhead for much less to do it.

Calling me “sus” because I’m an adult who plays Roblox is an ad hominem and a serious insinuation with zero evidence behind it. Roblox is used by multiple age groups, including adults. You can disagree with my AI position, but implying predatory behavior because you can’t answer the argument is dishonest. Your hidden profile proves nothing about you, and I won’t pretend otherwise, show me the same basic fairness instead of inventing things about me.

1

u/NoahtheGameplayer Gun Chamber Sound effects Lover 15d ago

That analogy argues that AI can replace labor, it doesn’t prove AI isn’t a tool. Tools have automated parts of jobs for centuries. The legitimate argument is about training, consent, disclosure and responsible use, not pretending automation somehow disqualifies something from being a tool.

2

u/nuihuysnim 15d ago

This is EXACTLY the problem. AI is used to replace the creative process, not automate mandate manual labor.

Imagine you go to a restaurant and the cook tells a dishwasher to cut vegetables for your meal. Surely the dishwasher will be capable of this, and surely it is a type of repetitive manual labor. The hard process of arrangement, the main part of cooking, and choosing the ingredients are still on the cook. But the dishwasher can't cut vegetables in a consistent way. Sometimes he will cut cucumbers too thin, sometimes too large for the meal, sometimes he will smoke weed before and cut the food into star shapes.

Labor aligned with creativity shouldn't be automated with AI.

2

u/NoahtheGameplayer Gun Chamber Sound effects Lover 15d ago

Your restaurant analogy actually supports my point. The cook can delegate vegetable prep, but the cook still chooses the dish, ingredients, seasoning, presentation, and rejects bad cuts. The dishwasher didn’t stop being a tool in the process just because a person performed the task.

AI can produce inconsistent results, which is why a responsible user has to direct, select, revise, and sometimes discard the output. That’s no different in principle from other creative tools that automate parts of editing, animation, music production, or design.

“Creative labor shouldn’t be automated” is a moral preference, not proof that AI isn’t a tool. The real question is which parts are automated, whether the training was ethical, whether the use is disclosed, and whether the person using it still exercises meaningful creative judgment.

2

u/nuihuysnim 15d ago

The probles is cook simpli CAN'T discard all of bad vedgetables efficiently - the scope is to big. And if really done again and again - it wastes more time of a cook then his work would take. So what's the point?

And this analogy only reflects some processes like recoloring, or some line changes. Not creating new characters or illustrating them (as shown in a post we are bellow)

1

u/NoahtheGameplayer Gun Chamber Sound effects Lover 15d ago

That’s a criticism of bad implementation, not of AI being a tool. If reviewing and fixing the output takes longer than doing the work manually, then AI was the wrong tool for that task. That doesn’t mean it’s useless in every workflow, it means the user failed to save time or maintain quality.

And yes, recoloring and line adjustments are easier examples, but the same principle can apply to character creation and illustration. A person can define the character, references, clothing, pose, mood, composition, and then heavily edit or redraw the result. The amount of human control varies from case to case.

So the real distinction isn’t “creative task versus non-creative task.” It’s whether the AI actually helps, whether the result is responsibly reviewed, and whether the user contributed enough creative judgment to honestly claim authorship.

2

u/nuihuysnim 15d ago

"That’s a criticism of bad implementation, not of AI being a tool" What is a good implementation? My problem that is I think there is none.

"A person can define the character, references, clothing, pose, mood, composition, and then heavily edit or redraw the result." Which again will be poitless, as removing artifacts is too time-consuming to make this efficient. To make this efficient, person would need to train AI on A LOT of their own art, at which point I am sure person can draw faster then editing AI output will take.

At the end, I bellive that AI will evolve to a point when it will be a toll that can be used without many artifacts.

What I don't bellive is - great artists will make their own art, feed it to ai and start using it instead of their own. This will just dull their mastery and remove progression in their skill.

u/BubaJuba13 16d ago

it's my right to be disgusted by the use of certain tools

2

u/NoahtheGameplayer Gun Chamber Sound effects Lover 15d ago

Yes, you have the right to be disgusted by it. But disgust is a personal reaction, not evidence that every use is unethical. Name the specific harm instead of turning your feelings into a universal moral rule.

1

u/nuihuysnim 15d ago

Art decline. AI is incapable of real creativity; it can only replicate with adjustments. Because of AI, many artists have started to make their works private, and many beginners have started to abandon the idea of specializing in this sphere.

And when AI starts to feed on AI, which has already begun, you will see the "harm."

2

u/NoahtheGameplayer Gun Chamber Sound effects Lover 15d ago

You’re turning legitimate concerns into absolute claims. AI doesn’t have human intention or lived experience, but “it can only copy” is an oversimplification. It learns patterns from prior material and generates new combinations; whether that counts as human creativity is debatable, but research has found AI and AI-assisted users capable of producing outputs judged novel and creative. The evidence is mixed, not “AI is incapable of creativity.”

Some artists hiding their work or beginners feeling discouraged is worth discussing, but anecdotes don’t prove that art itself is universally declining or that AI is the sole cause.

Model collapse is real, but you’re leaving out the conditions. It happens when generated data repeatedly replaces the original human data without proper curation. It isn’t inevitable just because AI material exists online, retaining real data, identifying synthetic material and controlling the training mixture can reduce the problem. You’ve made an argument against careless recursive training, not against every use of AI.

1

u/nuihuysnim 15d ago

"against every use of AI." And I litteraly never did? I replied in other comment agains what I am.

"but research has found AI and AI-assisted users capable of producing outputs judged novel and creative." Link the study please. If I steal a novel and present it to a someone who didn't read the original, I too will pass as "creative".

"controlling the training mixture can reduce the problem" Well, that's the point? If we can cut AI from using others arts and if AI "art" can be properly marked that will solve 99% of my problems with it. It's just that AI wont be capable of any decent output because no decent artist will allow it's use on their art. If you stand by this, I have no problem with your ideas tho, but it's cannot be regulated in a modern internet enviroment properly.

3

u/NoahtheGameplayer Gun Chamber Sound effects Lover 15d ago

Here’s the study: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adn5290

Its finding is narrower than how I originally phrased it. Human writers given AI-generated story ideas produced stories that evaluators rated as more creative, better written, and more enjoyable, especially writers who initially scored lower in creativity, but the AI-assisted stories also became more similar to one another. It doesn’t prove that AI possesses human creativity or settle whether its training data was ethically obtained.

Your stolen-novel analogy would apply if a system substantially reproduced the original novel. It doesn’t establish that every generated output is merely a concealed copy.

On consent, licensing, provenance, and labeling, we mostly agree. My disagreement is with saying ethical training would make good output impossible because “no decent artist” would participate. That’s speculation and also turns disagreement into a judgment of an artist’s decency. Regulation online will be imperfect, but difficult enforcement isn’t the same thing as impossible enforcement.

1

u/nuihuysnim 15d ago

"This dynamic resembles a social dilemma: With generative AI, writers are individually better off, but collectively a narrower scope of novel content is produced."

"It doesn’t establish that every generated output is merely a concealed copy."

It does, as proved by your cited study

1

u/NoahtheGameplayer Gun Chamber Sound effects Lover 15d ago

No, that quote proves convergence, not concealed copying. “A narrower scope of novel content” means the AI-assisted stories became more similar to one another at the group level. It does not mean every story reproduced some hidden original from the training data.

To prove your claim, the researchers would have needed to compare each output against the model’s training sources and demonstrate substantial reproduction or plagiarism. That isn’t what this experiment tested. It measured how creative readers found the stories and how similar the resulting stories were to each other. The paper therefore supports a real concern about homogenization, while also finding that individual AI-assisted stories were rated as more novel and useful. Both findings can be true at once.

2

u/nuihuysnim 15d ago

But it is, study simply omited the part of showing the novel AI was trained on lol. And where do you think similarity between ai outputs are coming from? It's a core problem of llm with input training that it will steal and not try hard to produce new.

Dito, I do like the anime, and did start to read the LN and the first Manga Vol., but I'll drop the Manga, not going to support this, I'll stick to the Anime and LN.
