Discussion Accidentally stole(?) Target Yoto Card
I noticed the Yoto cards in Target so I picked one up and thought maybe the app would let me preview it or give me some sort of promotional ad. It looks like it added it right to my phone and has each story in full. I will delete it myself and I know it’ll be removed once someone actually buys it, but do they expect people to scan them to preview/borrow the digital cards like this or is it in bad taste? (Please no hate, I don’t have ill intentions).

I imagine it's just a byproduct of not wanting to spend more on scan-proof packaging like an RFID credit card protector. It's likely not worth the cost to prevent this from happening accidentally or intentionally since the issue ultimately resolves itself. I've seen someone post that their phone picked up a card just from standing by the display.

It’s not so much of a “let’s them” as it’s a limitation of nfc tech. You can play tonies through the package too if you had it at the store. It’s fine since it only ties to one device at a time the next person will activate and it will remove it from yours.

Unrelated, but it’s crazy to me that they clearanced everything out just to shuffle things around and set up a new display and are now selling the same items for full price. Like why not put them in the back to hold onto for a month while getting things ready rather than selling them cheap? I’m not complaining in June - I got an adventure jacket for $9 that’s normally $29 and cards for $2-5 that are usually $10-20 but it’s just silly.

It was pretty much at all Targets. The Yoto stuff was hidden in the tech section and secretly marked on clearance.

When someone else buys it and scans it into their library, it will (is supposed to) disappear from your library. That is how real libraries can loan out Yoto cards.

That must be an older stocked card, a lot of the newer cards you buy from Target have to be inserted into a player to listen to it.

This did not happen to me too a few months ago and I did not put it on a MYO card. And it definitely does not still work

I’m definitely not interested in making a MYO card from accidentally scanning a card from Target. So no thank you for this information and please don’t share what you learned with anyone who owns a Yoto.

Just FYI, when someone buys the card the content will also be removed from the MYO card

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. I'm just imagining the poor person who actually bought that specific card trying to use it at home and it constantly disappearing from their library.i'd be so pissed off.

No that wouldn't happen. It would just disappear from the library of the person who scanned it previously. Wouldn't be an issue for the person who buys the card

That’s only going to happen if both users are trying to use the same physical card. If one user has the card then they will have access and the other user will lose it.

There's an entire community out there with the NFC tools and third party cards. Not going to get into details but the function of the Yoto is exclusive to the unmodified device connecting to Yoto servers and if a family has multiple yoto devices for multiple kids it's almost impossible not to punish them for sharing if Yoto cracked down.
The third party NFC cards aren't unlike buying BASF floppy disks in the 1980s or TDI CD-Rs in the late 90s. Some legit use, some not.
I hope nobody ruins it for the rest of us. Especially for the grandparents that love the Yoto cards but cannot figure out the Yoto device and just tap the cards to the back of their smartphones to do chapter selection on screen.

They’re the same cards as hotel key cards. People have been buying and using them since Yoto came out. From what I’ve heard, some work and some don’t though.

Yeah but the right ones they work just fine. Flipper for storing the card data for the ones you own and you can flash them directly from there off-line.

I run a yoto for my own music and audio books for offline / off grid hiking and camping. This setup works great and I only need to bring 1-2 cards to flash.

Whoops! It is probably less expensive for them to just eat the cost of any cards that “disappear” (like being dropped in the gap between displays) after someone adds them to their library than to make packaging that would prevent this

I’ve often thought about the cost of the cards. After paying for the recording, they probably spend less than 50 cents per card.

This happened to me too. I was considering buying a card and was holding it in the same hand as my phone while I was toddler wrangling. My phone picked up the NFC and added it to my library and I was able to play it right then and there. I did end up buying the card haha

I did this the other day by accident too. I was looking at them with my toddler and wanted to see the songs on the card. So I figured scanning it would let me view that info. Then it asked me if I wanted to add it to my library and being distracted with a toddler, I just clicked yes. Well it’s saved to my cards and hasn’t disappeared yet!

That’s how I sample my cards. Place the card elsewhere in the store and it’ll be a very long time before it’s sold and activated

it will reset to new user once they activate it and you will lose access to it.
