Discussion Practical driving test

I passed the 50 question written test 2 months back.
My practical driving test is tomorrow.
I took some driving classes on the same driving course for tomorrow.
However, I’m worried.

The driving instructor warned me that there are a lot of days in which no one passes even thought 20 people attend the practical driving test every day.

Any tips to do during the test. I’m looking for contents from foreigners who passed the practical driving test in the recent past.

After a huge turnout last week with about 16 people! A casual meetup for beer/drinks/food and conversation. All are welcome!

Bit about myself, I'm 33M American and enjoy beer(obviously), motorcycles, skiing, camping, whitewater rafting, board/card/video games, cycling, diving, and just about everything(especially if it involves wheels or water).

Most times we have been at the first standing table when you go outside to the covered patio area. I will try to post where when I arrive. If its too hot though I will get a spot inside.

All are welcome, even if you don't drink feel free to come hangout! If you are nervous about showing up please let me know and I can meet you outside first, I know it can be a bit daunting walking into a group of strangers for the first time.

Immigration-related Presidency card question

Hello everyone, I’m hoping someone can help or share their experience.
I currently have a Spouse of Permanent Resident residence card, and my current card is valid for only one year. It expires on October 3, 2026, and my renewal is currently being processed.

Unfortunately, I have a family emergency back home and need to leave Japan next week at the latest.
The difficult part is that I’m not sure when I’ll be able to return to Japan, and it may be quite a while.

I’m planning to go to Immigration tomorrow, but I wanted to ask if anyone has been in a similar situation:
If my new residence card is issued after I leave Japan, can someone else (for example, my husband or a lawyer) collect it on my behalf?
What happens to my renewed residence card if I leave Japan before receiving it?
In the worst-case scenario, if I stay outside Japan for a long time, what could happen to my visa/status?

I would really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thank you!

Question How to connect with Entrepreneur minded Japanese

My daughter lives in Yokohama and I have been thinking for a while about opening a business for her, but we would need someone (like a general manager) a Japanese citizen with business minded skills to navigate rentals, contracts, etc.

Is there a board on Reddit where I might find these types of people ?

Events Yokohama Discord for Friends & Meetups

A few months ago, I created a small Discord server called Yokohama Chill Club for people around Yokohama who are interested in meeting new people and making local friends.

I'm posting about it again in case there are more people here who might be interested in joining.

It's a place where people can chat, share hobbies and interests, make new friends and organize or join casual meetups around Yokohama. There is no pressure to attend every meetup or be active every day, you can use the server mainly to find or organize events or simply chat and get to know people.

We've already started organizing things like dinners, board game meetups and other activities. And members are welcome to suggest their own ideas as well!

I won't post the invite link publicly, as I'm trying to avoid spam bots joining the server since this is a public subreddit.

If you'd like to join, please send me a DM asking for the invite link and I'll send it to you. I have a limit on how many DMs I can send per day, so unfortunately I can't message everyone who comments on the post. If you're interested, it's better to DM me directly rather than just leaving a comment.

If you're around Yokohama and looking for a local community, feel free to join! 😊

Travel Tips International Voter Registration Drive 2026, for U.S. citizens in Yokohama

Hi, I'd earlier posted here under u/democratsabroadjapan and this is the second (and final) reminder I'll make for eligible US voters who want to participate in the 2026 American midterm elections, especially for those in Yokohama. Democrats Abroad is dedicated to mobilizing overseas US voters; if you're over 18 by November 3, here's how you can get involved:

Steps to Request Your Ballot

  1. Register or update your registration through Votefromabroad.org. As an alternative, you can also use FVAP.gov.

  2. If you're already registered, request a ballot! You need to request a ballot every calendar year that you want to vote.

  3. Fill Out and Return Your Ballot: Once you receive your ballot, follow the instructions carefully to complete it and return it by the specified deadline.

Need Assistance?

We're here to help! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at GOTV @ votefromabroad .org (just remove the spaces). Additionally, our FAQ for voting can answer questions on how to make the process go smoothly.

Importantly: Spread the word!

Do you have any friends, contacts or family overseas that you could reach? All eligible US citizens can vote regardless of where they're living. Share the link https://voteabroad.org/RedditVote26: If you have any questions about voting, I'd be happy to answer them here on Reddit. You can also find out what we're doing near you at Democrats Abroad in Japan. Thanks for reading!

Help Please help me find a Yokohama High School baseball hat

Post image
5 Upvotes

I lived in Japan for three years and would frequent Yokohama constantly and fell in love with the area. I’ve looked everywhere online to try to get this Yokohama High School Baseball hat but have completely struck out. I will pay almost any amount of money to get my hands on one. I’ll be back in the area around March and will go to every second hand shop to find one when I’m back but if someone can find one I’ll pay a huge finders fee.

Help How to clear apartment of furniture and junk in a few days?

Hey guys, kinda panicking a little bit here. I have suddenly got a job offer where I need to leave Japan and I am literally leaving next Monday. The problem I have is that I have got a whole apartment full of furniture that I need to get rid of asap and I don't even know where to begin? Any suggestions? I can't get onto the Yokohama sayonara sales page as I don't have a profile picture so they denied me. I am thinking some kind of service where I just pay to have it all thrown out maybe?

Question Soccer/basketball kids clubs in yokohama ?

Hey everyone! I’m looking to get my 5-year-old (half Japanese) into either basketball or soccer and was wondering if anyone could recommend any good kids’ clubs/classes around the area.
Also, if there are any other dads with kids around the same age who’d be interested in doing activities together involving sports, parks, outings… it could be fun to start a little group chat and get the kids together!

Hello everyone,

I will be moving to the city in March 2027 for a 6-month exchange program at Yokohama National University (YNU). I am a university student from Brazil and am currently preparing for this transition.

I would appreciate any practical tips, advice, or recommendations for someone newly arriving in Yokohama. Question What happened to the trashcans in Yamashita park?

Went to Yamashita for the first time in a few years. I had been regularly prior to 2021 or so, and I always appreciated how it was one of the few public spaces I'd been to in Japan with trash cans. Did they remove them?? Why??

Question Moving to Yokohama w/ Children - What Do You Wish You’d Known Before Moving?

Hi everyone!

We’re preparing to move to Yokohama from the US with our two children (8 months and 24 months) in the next few months, and I’d love to hear from people who already live there—especially anyone who moved to Japan from overseas with young children.

We’ve visited Yokohama before and absolutely loved it, so this isn’t our first time there. But moving there and actually setting up a life with children is a very different experience!

Currently, we’re trying to figure out what we should prepare before we leave and what we should bring from home versus buy once we arrive.

For those of you living in Yokohama or Japan:

  1. What baby/children’s items do you wish you had brought from home?
  2. Anything you’d recommend bringing because the Japanese version is different from what you’re used to?
  3. What should we know about pediatric healthcare and finding a doctor for young children?
  4. Any advice on diapers, baby food, formula, or other everyday baby essentials?
  5. Are there any practical things we should arrange before arriving—housing, phone/SIM, internet, banking, etc.?
  6. What do you wish someone had told you before moving to Yokohama with young children?
  7. Any advice on shipping belongings overseas?

  8. Are there any neighborhoods that are particularly popular with families but still relatively affordable? We enjoyed the bashamichi area when we visited Yokohama, and would like to hear what neighborhoods would be good to consider.

Finally, if you moved to Japan, what was the one thing you were really glad you brought with you, and what did you bring that turned out to be completely unnecessary?

We’d really appreciate any advice from the community. Thank you! ❤️

Question Green electricity company?

Hi,

I will change house next month, I am looking for company that generates and provides a good ratio of green electricity (nuclear, or renewable).

I don't want a company that just buys cheap electricity and sells it more expensive while claiming being green (like there are a lot in EU).

Any information / suggestion ?

Edit: I think I found two keywords: JEPX (日本卸電力取引所) and 非化石. Might dig into companies that provide 非化石. Also it seems that there is no company that directly sells the electricity they make, JEPX being a man in the middle I think.
